#2 SureFeed Microchip Cat Feeder

the surefeed automatic pet feeder

This is by far one of my favorite products I've ever purchased for my cats. The primary reason I needed it was because one of my cats steals my other cat's food. The SureFeed Mircochip feeder allows my little Beast to graze all day while keeping Lexi's roving jaws away from her food.

The claim to fame on this feeder, and it does work without fail, is that you can link your cat's Microchip to the feeder and it'll open up only for that cat. Pretty darn cool and helps minimize food thieving! A few other things worth noting:

  • Works great for both wet or dry food, the seal keeps wet food fresh for a few hours
  • Extremely easy to setup and link your cat's microchip to the feeder, stores up to 30 chips

Additional Information

Why Would I Want An Auto Feeder?

There are lots of reasons people consider an automatic cat food dispenser in their home, but the most common reasons can be broken into a couple of key categories.

Sanity

Lots of cats are prone to wake their human companions up at all hours of the evening or morning meowing for food.  Auto feeders can help handle this issue quite easily by automatically releasing food for your kitty at any programmed time.

Note many cats make noise at night and people assume they want food. This activity is often because the cats don't get enough exercise during the day and they aren't tired so they don't go to sleep. Be sure your kitty is getting enough exercise!

Preventing Vomiting:

Lots of cats have issues with eating very quickly and then getting sick even more quickly.  This if often driven by food anxiety. There are lots of different ways to deal with this, but an automatic feeder with a slow feeding function or with small portion control makes helps extensively.

If your cat cannot eat too much too fast then her stomach is unlikely to react poorly. Lots of small portions ensures your cat won't get sick all over the house!

Short Term Travel & Long Working Hours

If you travel often or perhaps work long hours then an automatic feeder can help relieve some of the stress of ensuring your feline friends get fed even if you're not around.  "Just set it and forget it." as the old saying goes.

Many feeders are also have tons of features that ensure you can login and see your cat and even talk to your cat through the built in speaker. It helps give you a touch of home while you're away which is always nice!

I myself travel extensively for work (usually on 24 hour trips) and it is always nice to be able to quickly login and see Beast or Lexi for a moment and watch them eat their dinner or their breakfast.

It is also nice when I get stuck at the office late because I don't need to worry about them waiting an extra few hours for me to get home and give them their dinner.

General Health & Medications

Eating huge meals has proven to be just as poor for cat health as it is for human health. Eating smaller meals in more spread out periods throughout the day helps promote better health for your cat. At the least it encourages your cat to walk back to the feeder each time which is some exercise.

On top of this some cats, like diabetic cats, need to have meals at very consistent times to properly maintain blood sugar levels. You'll also find many cats that simply require daily medication can have it deployed in one of these auto feeders.

Simply put the treat and the medicine in one of the rotating disc type feeders and set the timer and your kitty will have their medicine right on time! This of course assumes your kitty will eat their medicine!

What Types of Features Are There?

Portion Control Options

This option is available to control both the overall amount of food your cat eats as well as how much food is consumed at any one time.  This is important for keeping a limit on overall calorie intake and also ensures your cat won't end up vomiting if they eat too quickly.

Meal Programming Options

Depending on the design of your feeder this usually ranges from allowing 4 meals up a day up to 12 meals a day. This helps keep your cat's diet in check by controlling the total number of calories your cat eats and how often he or she eats.

There are some other feeders that will do as few as 2 meals or even 1 automated meal, but I didn't include any of these in my list for various reasons.

Dispensing Technology

This is one of the most important pieces of selection criteria because it will depend heavily on your cat's eating habits. There are a couple of main dispensing methods:

Disc Feeders: These have a tray that rotates for each feeding period. Food is prepared in advance and you can provide variability for your cat quite easily.

Pros of Disc Feeders:

  • Very simple in design and in use
  • Not prone to jamming like augur based feeders
  • Can be used with dry, semi moist and sometimes even moist food

Cons of Disc Feeders:

  • The most meals I've seen a disc feeder allow is 6
  • They don't have a reservoir so they usually require daily attention
  • Usually don't have any App based or internet capabilities

Reservoir Augur Feeders: These feeders have a large reservoir built into the top of them and they release a specific amount of food for each meal. The usually use an augur to do this. Food sits above and the augur turns to spin dry kibble out into the bowl.

Pros of Reservoir Augur Feeders:

  • Allow for a large number of meals to be programmed
  • Built in portion control capabilities
  • Often more technically savvy: WiFi enabled, apps, webcam, etc.
  • Often allow for an immediate feeding button even when away

Cons of Reservoir Augur Feeders:

  • The augur can sometimes jam when food calls in it at a poor angle
  • Your cat will get the same food all the time, you can't mix dry and semi moist and wet

Reservoir Conveyor Feeders: These are less common, but they are unique in design in purpose. They are specifically designed to minimize bloating/vomiting in cats with food anxiety. They have a reservoir, but instead of using an augur they use a conveyor belt that can move at an incredibly slow rate to drop food out over a 15 minute period of time.

Pros of Reservoir Conveyor Feeders:

  • Slow motion food deployment to minimize bloating and vomiting
  • Otherwise same as reservoir augur feeders

Cons of Reservoir Conveyor Feeders:

  • Same as reservoir augur feeders

Meal Calls

This option allows you to record a message that plays each time a new meal is deposited into the bowl or rotated into the available eating slow. The purpose is to make your cat feel like you are feeding her even when you're not around.

It is also somewhat of an alert to let your cat know the food is out, but most cats know by the sound of the feeder after a few days. In fact, many of them learn the time that feeder drops food and they'll be there waiting for it before it even drops.

Cat Specific Access Control

This is not a common feature, but it is definitely an important feature if you are trying to limit which cat has access to which food. The SureFeed Microchip feeder is the only feeder I know that has this capability.

It basically ensures that only a cat with a specific microchip can get into the feeder. This is essential when you have cats that are food thieves or when you simply want to feed one cat more than another cat.

Note that the SureFeed microchip feeder is not designed to stop a determined and aggressive cat or dog. It does a solid job of resisting being opened, but an aggressive animal can pry it open (and potentially damage it in the process) so be sure to keep an eye on it the first few times you use it.

Food/Water Combinations

This option basically combines a gravity driven water bowl with the food dispenser. It is simply intended to combine everything in one place for simplicity both in purchase and daily use.

Note that research shows that cats are far more prone to drink running water from a fountain than they are to drink still water. This is assumed to be driven by instincts that tell cats still water is more likely to have diseases or parasites lurking in it.

Backup Battery Operation

Most feeders function by being plugged into a standard wall outlet, but there are some that are completely battery driven too. Those that are plugged in often have a battery backup system in case the power goes out while you're away.

You can also use the batteries by default and put the feeder in a place that doesn't have a plug. Most feeders are low power consumption so the batteries will last for months.

Ice Packs / Cooling Tech

Some of the disc based feeders listed here will allow you to insert ice packs inside them to keep wet food cold. This is a huge benefit in keeping wet food fresh and will ensure it doesn't spoil throughout the day.

It is important to note though that the air seal is probably the most important piece of keeping wet food fresh throughout the day. Usually air flow causes it to dry out and become stale and hard. Ice helps, but it won't solve the problem completely.

Which is Right For My Cat(s) and I?

Choosing the right feeder can be a bit of a complicated process because of the sheer number of options available on the market.  I recommend reviewing the features above in detail and determining which are important to you and your cats.

This should give you a good idea of the general type of feeder you'll need. But here's a quick example that might help. Let's suppose I'm in this situation:

  • I'm single and I have 2 adult cats and I work long hours
  • Once in a while I make overnight trips for work
  • My cats are both grazers and only eat when they are hungry
  • My cats like both wet and dry food

In this situation I'd likely go for a disc type feeder that allows for the insertion of ice packs. Then I would rotate both dry and wet food into the slots depending on my daily schedule.

Go through a similar process with your own cat(s) and you'll quickly identify the right type of feeder for you and your family. The rest of the features are mostly just additional benefits!

How Dependable Are They?

Auto feeders are growing more and more dependable by the day. Many of the feeders are now starting to feature tons of alerts and notifications if they encounter any sort of problem. These can be sent directly to your phone to let you know there's an issue you need to resolve.

If you plan to depend on your feeder for any extended period of time I'd highly recommend buying it far in advance of any vacation or trip and testing it for several days first. Not only will this ensure you programmed it properly, but it'll ensure you didn't get a defective one shipped to you.

My personal opinion is that you should still have someone look in on your cats if you plan to leave for any long period of time. This ensures your kitty won't end up with a jammed feeder or a power surge blowing the feeder's circuits.

Can They Substitute for a Cat Sitter?

The resounding answer is absolutely not.  You should not expect an automatic feeder to do the job of a cat sitter. This is true no matter how many electronic gadgets you have around for your cat.

We have lots of fun stuff in our house that is WiFi enabled and app enabled, but an automatic feeder doesn't do much beyond drop food in a bowl on a consistent basis and perhaps play a little recording of your voice.

Even if you go a step further and buy a webcam enabled version your cat likely doesn't really understand what is happening and where you are. Mostly they start to associate sound from the feeder with food coming from the feeder.

Automatic feeders are awesome for peace of mind when you're not available or when you're gone for a short period of time.

But! And it is a big but! Your cat will still want interaction and attention if you leave the house for any extended period of time. On top of this you'll typically want the safety and security of knowing someone is going to check on your cat in case of a power outage or an emergency of some sort.

My personal opinion is that if you're leaving for more than 36 hours you should have someone stop in and check on your cat(s) whether they have an automated feeder or not.

What About the PawBot?

If you've heard of the PawBot and you're wondering why I don't have it listed then read on. If you're not familiar read on anyway for some news and a cool robot!

What is PawBot? It is basically a really cool robot that you can load full cans of wet food into for automatic feeding. PawBot will open the cans of food and deposit them in a bowl. It is pretty darn cool. You can check out the video below.

Why Isn't It Listed? The short answer is because it is currently unavailable. It is undergoing redesign to ensure that the costs come down to a price point that is more accessible by your typical cat owner!

When Will It Be Available? Unfortunately I don't know, but you can checkout the PawBot website and join their wait list to be updated immediately.

Forget what the cat wants, these automatic cat feeders are what I want.  I have one that isn’t automatic, it just is an upside down jug with food that has a constant amount in the bowl, but it doesn’t regulate how much my cat gets to eat.  It’s just always available, and I don’t want her having constant food in her dish.  These are ingenious, and I’m so happy I found your site.  Thank you so much!

Hahaha. I should rename the site StuffCatOwnersWant.com! And then it would have one page with the word SANITY in giant letters.

All joking aside, you’re absolutely right. Limiting food intake is very important to help your cats maintain a healthy weight. I just got dinged by my vet for Lexi getting a bit overweight. I have to limit her food intake much more carefully from here on out!

    Hi Craig,

These products are amazing, I  so much love the fact that you can even record your voice and your cat could be fed even while you are away.

It’s greatly applauding. Where is the cheapest place to buy one of these cat fountains? Can you get it shipped out of the USA?

Cat fountains are widely available on Amazon, Walmart, Chewy, Petco, PetSmart and a variety of other niche store sites. If you don’t live in the USA there are still tons of options, for example Miaustore is huge in Europe.

    Dear Craig,

Thanks for this helpful guide and your post was very insightful.

This is great and helpful. I do have a friend in our church, whenever we have activity or prayer for the whole day he use to go to feed his cat in between. He is having his own business so when his wife is not available he need to close his shop and need to go to provide food to his cats.

We use to make fun of him but he do have great love for his cats and I have noticed when I am with him for 3 days he use to travel 16 kms (8+8) in the afternoon and 16 kms (8+8) in the evening just to feed his cats.

I strongly believe this post is going to be a greater help to him and I am going to share your post with him. Also, the additional information you have provided adds great value to this post.

    Much Success!

    Paul

Hopefully he finds it helpful!  With most of these he could either set a simple schedule or just login from his mobile phone and tap the feed button to give them the next meal!

Thank you for this great post. With the holiday season fast approaching I regularly go away on short 1 or 2 day visits to see family or friends.

I love the idea of the SureFeed Microchip Access Cat Feeder because Tabby always steals Snowflake’s food. With this feeder I can rest assured knowing that Snowflake will be able to enjoy his food without me having to be there to supervise his meals.

This feeder will make my Christmas stress free!

Ha! That’s the exact same problem we have with Lexi and Beast. I think Beast finally started to get revenge though and has now been stealing and marking (thank god not peeing on, but using her paw) Lexi’s food bowl. So now I am having to get a second microchip feeder to keep them both out of each others bowls! Silly fur balls!

I like this post, automatic feeders are very good and every lover of pet should have one, I like the fact that it performs a whole lot of functions such as helping to prevent food thieving and save one the stress of being present always to feed cats. My favourite is the  sure feed microchip access and I will recommend this to all lovers of pets.

Thanks for reading Clement. I wouldn’t recommend the Surefeed to all pet lovers. It is an expensive product and it isn’t necessary unless you specifically have an issue with food thieving. There are a lot more affordable or better options if you just need to drop food on a set schedule.

Thank you for sharing your reviews of these awesome cat feeders. Having grown up with cats all my life, we ‘ve never had or considered an automatic feeder. But after reading this I really have to reconsider as this looks amazing and can finally allow you to leave your home for a few days at peace knowing your pets are fed. Unfortunately I can’t have a cat in my current apartment, but, my mother still has 3 in her home and always worries about taking a vacation because of her pets. I would love to buy her one of these. I’ll bookmark this post for when I am ready to buy.

    Cheers,

    David

They are indeed a pretty nice piece of technology to have for shorter trips!

I’d personally still recommend having a pet sitter check in at least once over a 3 day trip, but it’ll get most of the work done for you and your sitter so they can focus on playing with your cats!

    Great post and good info.

I have the WOpet for several months now, and I was looking if there’s another one that is better.

But looking to your info, this one we have is already the best and honestly, it really is.

Done is the time you need to feed your cats many times a day, mines eat a lot so for me it was necessary, but now it is easy, they have the food anytime they want, I don’t need to spend too much time anymore on it.

Is it luxury, yes it is, does it make your lazy? Positive, but I like it!

Hahaha, that’s alright in my book! The more time you can use to play with them instead of feed them and clean up after them the better! They like their attention no matter what non cat owners say.

In the interest of being lazy, you might also want a robo vacuum to help minimize your weekly vacuuming regimen…

i’m leaving on a week long trip and was looking for a good cat feeder for my two boys.  I’m thinking out of the ones you have listed that WOpet 7L Automatic Cat Feeder is probably the best for me.

I want to make sure they have multiple meals so 4 feedings a day is perfect for them.

    Thank you!

Thanks for this detailed post, used to have dogs but my religion only support having cats and other clean animals as pets and i am really new to keeping cats as pets.

I work in a company and leave the house very early then get back late in the night and it is usually hard to find time to manually feed my cat and most times i just fall asleep without feeding it

I would stick with your no.1 recommendation WOpet 7L Automatic Cat Feeder because of its features which makes would make it very easy to use and maintain

Can i get the feeder in a different color?, dark preferably

It is a great option and it does have a ton of great features. Unfortunately different colors are not available for that model. You might want to check back in every few months if you need a dark colored option. There’s also PetNet feeder which is comparable from a feature standpoint and comes in black.

I liked all of the automatic cat feeders, but the best for me is SureFeed Microchip Access Cat Feeder, even though is a bit expensive, I loved it. As you wrote it eliminated the cat’s food anxiety and restored the sanity. I wonder to know if is it good for dogs too? Thank you for let us know those feeders.

It should work fine for smaller dogs. It isn’t designed to have the capacity for a large dog though.

It certainly helps with food anxiety because it ensure that no other animals can steal your pets food. This means even if they leave for a while…when they come back the food will still be there!

The awesome info just keeps on coming, eh Craig, I like your article regarding the cat feeders. I can remember a time when I forgot to feed my cat because I was running some errand in town somewhere. How many cat feeders do you have in your house and do you program them to feed your cats at a specific time? This is great information to have and I’m glad that I came across it. Keep up the good work!

I currently use two of the SureFeed microchip feeders for my cats. They are both prone to steal food from one another so this works really well in our home.

My brother though absolutely loves his WOpet feeder. It has significantly helped reduce the food anxiety his fur ball has. She no longer eats so quickly that she vomits and then leaves a huge mess behind for cleanup. They run their option on 4 feedings per day and they’ve slightly modified the bowl themselves to make it harder for Nala (their cat) to eat so fast.

    HI Craig,

We have two cats and one is eating all the food, the other is going hungry. So, the chip regulated feeders are going to be my next purchase. Thank you so much for this site. The wife and I are too busy to even look for what to buy. Your site with the Best Automatic Cat Feeders is perfect.

    Thank you!

As a cat lover I believe your site to be very impressive.  You have posted a lot of good information that a cat owner benefits from knowing.

Obesity in cats is getting to be more of a problem every day.  I don’t believe in on-demand feeding, because many cats just don’t know when to stop.  The amount they eat needs to be controlled!  I was pleased to that the feeders can be set for controlled quantities, so the cat cannot overeat.  I believe that is extremely important.

You’re absolutely right. Obesity in cats has become a massive problem that we owners need to address by stopping free feeding and by ensuring we feed our cats a high quality diet! While I don’t recommend all dry food I still think it is the most convenient way to feed cats for many owners and they should consider an auto feeder to help control portions.

My first question when I saw the article headline was whether it would work for when you’re on holidays. I’m glad that you addressed that question in your article! An automatic cat feed would perhaps just make the life of a catsitter easier.

I’m amazed at the array of features an automatic cat feeder can have and particularly impressed by the one with the microchip reader to limit access to certain cats!

Will these automatic cat feeders work for a dog as well? it is annoying when I have to keep feeding my dog when I am busy and just wanted a way that I can set lots of food in it and forget about it. I know dogs are different in that they will eat until they throw up but at least this gives us an idea of what we can use to feed our pets while we are gone for a little while.

These feeders should work fine for a dog, but you’ll definitely need to look at the size of the dog and see if the feeder can accommodate enough food.

If you’ve got a smaller dog (under 20 pounds) then you should be fine. But if you have something like a black lab or a golden retriever I’m guessing you’ll have trouble feeding them without constantly refilling the feeders.

They do make some larger feeders specifically for dogs too though!

im going on a long weekend vacation with my boyfriend and my two cats don’t like to travel.

would an automatic feeder like the wopet one be enough to make sure my cats are fed while im gone?

i live in a secluded area so cat sitters are impossible to find and i can’t be home myself

I hope that you and your boyfriend have a wonderful trip!

I would say that you shouldn’t 100% depend on an automatic feeder. It could jam or the power could go out and leave your kitties with nothing to eat.

Automatic feeders are generally pretty reliable, but I would still recommend having a family member or a neighbor stop in at least once while you’re gone to ensure everything is still running right.

You’d also need to make sure you have plenty of water from something like a drinking fountain.

And someone will need to scoop the litter box unless your kitties are outdoor cats and go outside.

    Nice article!

My aunt has 2 cats and I am sure she would find something like this to be quite beneficial! What is your favourite part about automatic cat feeders?

I think they have these for dogs as well (probably pretty similar) and can defintley see the value in them! it would defintley take the thinking out of “was the dog fed, when does she need to be fed, etc.”

Considering I have one cat that eats way too fast and then from time to time ends up throwing up my favorite part is definitely the ability to put out lots of small meals over an extended period of time.

This makes sure my cat Lexi doesn’t vacuum up all her food immediately and then vomit in the house. A huge plus for me.

And you’re absolutely right, they do make auto feeders for dogs as well. Most of them are designed with a lot more capacity though. Dogs tend to be bigger than cats on average so they eat a lot more. Most cat feeders won’t have enough space to feed a larger dog for any extended period of time.

Hi, thank you for that wonderful review. I have two cats of my own and I have been hesitating for the longest time to get an automatic feeder for them. I work long hours and they sometimes wait for me a lot before they get their evening meal.

Your review is not only informative but gave me enough good reasons to want to buy a cat feeder.  You are right why let my cats wake me on weekends when they can be fed while I sleep. I will certainly use your suggestion to pick the proper feeder.

    Thank you again.

I have loved having an automatic feeder. Without it Beastling used to always walk all over me and sometimes even jump on me early in the morning when she was hungry!

No longer do I wake up to four cat paws slamming into my stomach at 7:00 AM!
