Additional Information

Are Leather Collars Safe?

Leather collars just as safe as any other type of collar on the market for cats. You just need to make an educated purchase based on the circumstances of your particular cat.

They key difference between many leather collars and many nylon collars is that a lot of leather collars still don't come equipped with a full on safety release or an elastic band. This means if your feline friend gets stuck they can get injured or even worse.

Note that I specifically called out every collar in this list with a breakaway latch or an elastic band. These features are becoming far more common, but they aren't quite yet the norm as they are with nylon collars.

One other item you may wish to factor in is how much additional safety comes from having a collar that won't fall off versus the likelihood of your cat getting stuck on something. If the likelihood of your cat getting stuck seems low, but the likelihood of your cat pawing the collar off seems high, then you may want to go for a more traditional buckle style option instead of a safety release.

You should make your decision based on the habits and behavior or your cat as well as the environment your cat spends most of his or her time in.

Behavioral Factors:

  • Super Curious / Loves Exploring: Your should definitely consider a safety release.
  • Relaxes All Day: This type of cat should be ok without a safety release.

Environmental Factors:

  • Outdoor cat: You should definitely consider a safety mechanism.
  • Indoor/Outdoor cat: You should think about having a collar with a safety mechanism.
  • Indoor cat: I still recommend a safety mechanism, but if you are constantly with your cat and you don't have many obstacles indoors then a collar without a safety mechanism may be ok.

What Features Should I Consider?

Safety Release / Elastic Band

This is by far the most important feature to consider for any cat collar, especially if you have a cat that is an indoor/outdoor or full on outdoor cat.  Outdoor cats tend to do a lot more sneaking around in potentially dangerous places than indoor cats.

With that additional sneaking comes the opportunity for your cat's collar to get caught on things. It could be a fence post or it could be something sticking out the side of a bush or tree. A collar without a safety release of some form could cause your cat to get stuck and end up choking.

Safety releases come in two major forms:

  • Breakaway releases: The breakaway release is designed so that if the collar gets pulled on with any decent amount of pressure it will simply pop open and fall off.
  • Elastic Bands: Elastic bands ensure that the collar stretches an inch or two when pulled on with pressure. This ensures your cat can't easily choke and can escape the collar.

Both of these features are definitely worth exploring if your cat is going outside. Even if you have an indoor cat it doesn't hurt one bit to aim for collars with this type of release built in for added safely.

The only drawback of these releases is that since the collars come off more easily your cat may lose them. This means an additional cost to replace lost collars and the potential issue of your cat getting lost outside and losing their collar in the process.

D Ring for Tags

Depending on the laws in your state or city you may legally be required to keep tags on your cat if he or she goes outside.  Even if you're not legally required though it is smart to keep tags on your cat. This way if your cat ends up lost or injured people can be in touch with you a heck of a lot faster and more easily.

A D ring is the traditional metal ring built right into the collar that you'll be able to hang tags from.

Personalized Name Plate

Not much different than your D ring for tags, but personalized name plates are usually much more secure than a typical tag.  The plates are often sewn right into the fabric or the leather of the collar to ensure they stay on unless the collar itself falls off. This is an added layer of security for your kitty cat.

Reflective Strip

A reflective strip is a huge benefit for any feline that is going out at night. The closer you leave to busy roads the more important it is for your kitty to have a reflective strip on their collar. The whole idea is so that your cat is easy to see when there are lights around.

Reflective strips make your cat visible from much further than they would be otherwise. If you have a dark colored cat it is even more important that he or she has a reflective strip to help keep them safe.

Color

You may not think of color as an important factor in your selection, but it is worth considering whether or not the color of the collar will stand out against your cat's fur.

Not only will this help people understand the cat is not a stray, but it'll also help identify your cat in low light situations. Bright colors against dark fur make a stark contrast in fading light or on a dark road.

Can I Walk My Cat With a Collar?

A very calm cat can potentially be walked on a collar, but a collar is not at all designed to stay on a cat in any situations of stress or hard pulling. I wouldn't recommend walking a cat on a collar no matter what type, but you should be even more careful if your collar has a breakaway component or a stretching elastic band built into it.

These collars are basically designed to come off or let your cat out when they encounter a stressful or dangerous situation. If your cat is out for a walk and encounters any form of danger they can easily slip out of a collar and disappear on you.

Collars are not designed for taking your cat on walks. If you want to take your cat out on a walk you should definitely look at a traditional harness and leash combination instead. Harnesses are specifically engineered to stay on your cat even when they are pulling hard against the leash.

This means additional safety for your feline friend and an easy way to pick your cat up when it is necessary.

Should My Cat Wear a Collar?

Ideally all cats should wear collars. The simple fact is that most cats that get lost never make it home to their family. This is of course another reason you should microchip your cat, but a collar can make all the difference.

Collars not only provide an additional level of safety for your cat, they also let people know that a cat belongs to someone.  This means people are more easily able to look at the collar and make a quick phone call if they discover a lost or injured cat.

Without a collar your cat would easily end up in the Animal Care and Control center or even worse, ignored as a stray when in dire straits.

Even if your cat is completely an indoor cat you should still consider a collar. Most cats manage to escape the house at some point or another. They are curious after all, and every time the door or window opens it is an opportunity for your feline friend to get out.

A high quality collar is a great way to let people know that this cat belongs to someone and it likely wants to find its way home. With advancements in safety releases and latches you also have far less to worry about than you previously did when fitting your kitty with a collar.

Will My Cat Wear The Collar?

Many owners don't think that cats are likely to wear a collar. But the research flat out shows that cats can and will get used to wearing a collar if the owners are committed to ensuring their cat wears it.

Research from a consortium of schools revealed that as long as owners insist on their cat wearing a collar the cat is quite likely to wear it.   Over 70% of cats in a 6 month study kept wearing their collar when the owners stayed on top of it.

The short of it is, as long as you take control of the situation you will be able to keep a collar on your cat. You may need to introduce the collar slowly, but once your cat is used to it there won't be so many problems.

There are all sorts of tips and methods available for getting your feline friend to wear a collar. You can check some of them out here on the  Humane Society website.

How Do I Make Sure It Fits?

Making sure your cat's collar fits is pretty straight forward. It is mostly dependent on you measuring your cat before you purchase a collar and then fitting it to the point that it is snug, but not too tight that it feels like it choking your kitty.

You can measure your cat on your own with a piece of string and a ruler. The most important measurement for a collar is around the neck of your cat.  You want to make sure that your collar is going to buckle on snugly at the appropriate length, otherwise it will be prone to fall off easily and get lost.

The general rule of thumb for 'snug' is that you should be able to fit two of your fingers between the collar and your cat's neck. This will give sufficient space but also stay on well enough to keep your cat safe.

Key features of these tags:

  • The lasering looks black in the photos, but it will appear with a mirror finish.

Why Should Cats Wear Collars?

There is one simple response to this question. If your cat gets outside or gets lost a collar is the easiest way for someone to identify your cat and get in touch with you as quickly as possible.

Collars are by far the easiest way for a fellow human to identify a cat and the owner of the cat. Especially if the collar itself is personalized with the cat’s information.

There are also several movements among pet owners (for example the #KittyConvict Project) that make it easy for other cat owners to recognize a lost/escaped cat. This means fellow pet owners are more likely to make an effort to help return a clearly lost pet.

Research shows that cats that get lost are far more likely to be returned to their owners if they have a collar on when they get lost.

Will My Cat Really Wear a Collar?

Many owners simply assume that their cat won’t wear a collar because they’ve mostly seen cats that don’t have collars on. There may be an adjustment period to get your cat used to a collar, but most cats will wear a collar if you as an owner insist on it.

Research has shown that owner perception is the biggest indicator of whether or not a cat will wear a collar. Basically, if owners don’t think the cat will wear a collar then they simply won’t try to get the cat to wear a collar.

But reassuringly, the most recent research shows that over 72% of cats wore a collar through the end of a study period. So if you are dedicated to getting your cat into a collar you can make it happen!

There’s no specific trick to getting a cat to wear a collar. As with most things, it requires time and persistence (and in a lot of cases treats). You’ll want to introduce your cat to a new collar slowly and gradually expand the amount of time the cat wears the collar until they wear it all the time.

Why Only Collars With Safety Releases?

Cats are climbers and explorers and like to squeeze themselves into tight places.  Collars without a safety release can easily get caught on tree branches, splintering wood, a hanging nail, etc. There are a laundry list of things a collar could get caught on in the wild, or even inside the home.

If a collar gets caught on these objects and doesn’t release easily then your cat could be seriously injured, trapped, or even strangled.

Enter safety clasps, buckles and releases. There are also the more uncommon elastic straps that serve a similar purpose, but aren’t as highly recommended these days. All of these are designed to ensure your cat has an opportunity to get out of an otherwise dangerous situation.

The short of it is, collars keep your cat safe if they get lost, but safety releases bring an extra layer of safety if they get stuck on something while out and about.

What if My Cat is an Indoor Cat Only?

Many cat owners don’t encourage their cats to wear collars because the cat is “indoor only.” The unfortunate thing is that the bulk of cats that get lost and don’t make it back home are cats that escaped from an indoor only life.

They may have snuck out the door or been spooked while the front door was open and simply scampered off. Most indoor cats will get outside at some point in their life so a collar is a great added layer of safety.

Unfortunately you can’t put a collar on your cat once they are already out the door. Indoor cats should have collars on even if you never intend to let them out.

What if My Cat Already Has a Microchip?

Microchips are one of the most effective tools ever created in tracking pets and ensuring they make it home to their owners when lost.

However, microchips aren’t something that an average individual can scan/read. And many people, non pet owners in particular, aren’t even familiar with their existence. The Humane Society recommends that even microchipped cats wear a collar with tags or identification included.

This means that for the microchip to be useful your cats has to make it it to a veterinarian, shelter or animal control center of some sort. Added steps mean added complexity and every additional step means your pet is less likely to make it home to you.

Now don’t get me wrong. I highly encourage you to mircochip your pet. It is an absolute necessity. But a collar will be something almost any person can read and use to get in touch with you the second they encounter your cat.

How to Measure Your Cat For a Collar

Average collars tend to measure between 8 and 12 inches for an adult cat. This will easily accommodate most cats out there, but for those of you with smaller or extra large cats you may have to look for something special.

Measuring your cat for a collar is a necessity to ensure the collar won’t simply slip off at any point and also to make sure it won’t choke your cat. Cats are also rather resourceful when it comes to their own comfort and you don’t want them to be able to easily shove the collar off.

Measuring your cat’s neck is easy, you can check out this short video how to for a simple overview. All you’ll need is a piece of string and a ruler. This video may help if you’ve never done it before:

Wrapping It Up On Cat Collars

The market is loaded with pet products, in particular about 1000 different variations of cat collars. There are nylon, leather, personalized, standard, accessorized, etc. The list goes on and on.

Each type of collar has advantages and disadvantages worth considering. No matter which path you choose you should aim to include the personal details of your cat on their collar to ensure they find their way home quickly and easily in the event of an escape.

You should also ensure your selected collar has a safety release just in case your cat gets into a sticky situation and the collar gets caught on something. There are several kinds of safety releases, just be sure to choose a collar with one. Note every collar on this page has a safety mechanism.

Don’t be afraid to try multiple types of collars! Some may irritate your cat far less than others and some are more effective for being seeing in the dark than others. There are a bunch of options and you should choose what’s right for your cat based on their personality and behavior.

If you keep a collar on your cat and it has personal details tell us which one it is below! If you’re having trouble getting your cat to wear a collar let us know too by leaving a comment below.

Product Overview:

the pettsie christmas cat collar with wood bow tie and friendship bracelet with their featured gift boxThe Pettsie breakaway cat collar with bow tie is specifically designed with your feline friend in mind.  There are 4 major color/style combinations available for this particular collar set and they all not only look great, but they’re all incredibly well made and have all the necessary features for your cat to stay safe and sound.

The most important feature of any collar for a cat is the breakaway clasp or connector. If you’re not familiar with cat collars, this basically means that the collar should release under any significant amount of pressure and fall off of your cat.  To say the least Pettsie has this part knocked out cold. The breakaway clasp in this collar works really well. It is firm enough that it’ll stay on pretty easily and it is super easy to put it on too. But on the more important side of things, it pops off when you need it to. You can test this easily yourself by just tugging on it.

Why you might ask? Well, our feline friends love to climb and walk into areas that their collars can easily get stuck on. If your cat happens to go up somewhere high and jump down for example, the collar could easily snag a branch and end up choking your poor kitty if you don’t have a breakaway clasp. This isn’t something we typically worry about with our canine friends because they stick to the ground for the most part.

As for comfort. A lot of collars out there on the market are made of things that might cause your cat to itch or be really uncomfortable, but the Pettsie collar is

the pettsie christmas cat collar on a grey cat and the friendship bracelet on a man's wrist

made of 100% cotton so it is very comfortable to wear, really soft and really lightweight too. This means your cat hardly notices it is there. My cat Beast previously tried other collars and wouldn’t tolerate them very well, but she doesn’t mind the Pettsie collar at all. The bow tie is made of wood and is small enough to not bother your cat at all, but they certainly look dapper with it on!

What about size you may ask? It will fit a wide variety of cats because it is designed to be adjustable to a wide range of sizes. You’ve got a spread of about 3 inches total which is a lot of space for a cat neck. In this case it’ll run from about eight to eleven inches.  If you’ve never measured your cat’s neck before, be sure you do so before you order this collar. You’ll want to leave space for about two fingers inside the collar as well so it doesn’t choke your cat!

One last thing worth noting is that this comes with a friendship bracelet for the human you are giving it to.  My personal opinion is that the friendship bracelet is fine and it is comfortable, but I personally don’t wear mine around at all other than for silly pictures with my cats etc.  See the picture to the left for both the collar and the bracelet in use. Beast wasn’t feeling very photogenic that day!  I would say this is the one reason I didn’t give it 5 stars. I’d personally rather they knock a dollar or whatever off the price and ditch the bracelet. That being said, if you’re giving it as a gift it might be a perk for you.

Pros:

  • The breakaway clasp works incredibly well, it is really easy to put on your cat and stays on quite well, but with any significant tug it’ll pop off leaving your cat safe and sound
  • This collar is really fashionable and has four different color and pattern combinations available for you to choose from (you’ll see it features as my favorite of all Christmas collars!)
  • The collar is 100% cotton which isn’t too common among cat collars, super lightweight, durable and comfortable
  • A standard D Ring is include on the collar so you can attach any necessary tags for your cat like a rabies tag or a license or a lost and found tag
  • It is adjustable and has a pretty solid range of sizes available (8-11 inches) so you can easily fit any small or medium sized cat, be sure to measure for your large sizes
  • It does come in a very nice gift box that is easy to wrap and makes a wonderful present

Cons

  • My personal opinion is that the friendship bracelet it comes with is kind of corny and I’d prefer they just knock a few cents or dollars off the price of the collar

my cat beast with the pettsie cat collar onFrequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the width of this collar?
    • It is about a half an inch in width.
  • What is the length of the collar?
    • The collar runs from 8-11 inches depending on how you set it up. It fits both my 8 and my 12 pound cat pretty easily with a slight adjustment.
  • How much pressure does it require for the collar to breakaway and does it work as expected?
    • It definitely works as expected. It requires a significant tug, but any real weight on it would definitely result in the collar popping open/off. Your kitty is safe!
  • Can you remove the wooden bow tie?
    • It isn’t designed to be removed, but with some effort you could definitely pull it off. It might require a utility knife to cut the loop that holds it on though.

Tips for Getting Your Cat to Use It

Cats are pretty notorious for not really liking to wear collars. That being said, you really should have your cats wear a collar from a safety standpoint. Even indoor cats can benefit from a collar because a large percentage of indoor only cats do manage to get outside at some point in their lives. Not only this, but it is almost always on accident and they aren’t really used to the environment because they are indoor only!  A collar can make all the difference in ensuring you get your kitty back. If you have any questions on why a cat should wear a collar be sure to read this article.

Here are the key steps I’ve used to introduce my cats to their collars:

  • Be sure you measure your cat first and buy a size appropriate collar
  • Introduce your cat to it over several days: let her sniff it, feed her treats while it is nearby, lay it on her and feed her treats
  • Put the collar on your cat for a few minutes and then take it off and feed your cat a treat or two
  • Slowly increase the length of the sessions with leaving the collar on
  • If you plan to attach bells or tags etc. to the collar wait until your cat is comfortable with the base collar alone before adding these items
  • Be patient, it may take a few days for your cat to adjust to wearing the collar

Wrapping it Up on the Pettsie Breakaway Cat Collar

That’s about all I have to say on the Pettsie Breakaway Cat Collar. It’s an excellent collar on the overall and it has all the key features you want in a collar for your feline friend: breakaway clasp, comfortable cotton material, D ring for tags and a bell, adjustable size wise, stylish and durable.  On the overall it is pretty difficult to find a better cat collar on the market.

As I indicated, the only thing I don’t love about it is the friendship bracelet and that is just when I bought it for myself. If you’re buying it for a friend or as a gift it is kind of a nice little addition. But I could personally do without it.

Giecooh Christmas Cat Collar, 2 Pack Breakaway Cat Collar with Bells | Red and Green, Breakaway Safety Buckle, Nylon Cats Collars for Boy and Girl, Adjustable Size to Fit Different Kitten

This is the collar to grab if you want your cat looking genuinely festive rather than just wearing a red ribbon. The Santa-and-reindeer print is a step up from a plain holiday pattern, and it photographs well.

It comes as a two-pack, so it works for one cat who needs a backup or two cats who both deserve to look sharp. The breakaway hardware is worth calling out too: it's designed to release cleanly if your cat gets pulled or entangled.

  • Santa-and-reindeer print that's genuinely festive without going overboard, and reviewers say it photographs well
  • Breakaway buckle designed to release cleanly if your cat pulls on it or gets snagged
  • Both the charms and the bells are removable, so you can dial the look up or down based on your cat's patience for accessories

Malier 2 Pack Christmas Cat Collars Breakaway with Bow Tie and Bell, Classic Buffalo Plaid with Snowflake Pattern Kitten Collar with Bow Tie Collar for Cats Kitten Stocking (Red Stripe & Green Stripe)

This one's built for the smaller members of the household. The buffalo plaid and snowflake patterns are genuinely cute, and the cotton strap is double box-stitched at the stress points.

Just know going in that this is one of the smaller-adjusting collars on this list. That makes it a strong pick for a kitten or petite adult cat and a poor one for anything bigger.

  • Cotton strap and bow tie with double box-stitching at the stress points
  • Eco-friendly plastic buckle designed to release safely under pressure, the same breakaway protection as every other pick on this list
  • Both the bell and the bow tie are removable if your cat could do without the extra flair
  • Owners consistently describe the look and construction quality as cute and well made
  • This one adjusts only from 6" to 10", noticeably less room than the LLHK or azuza, which both go up to 12"

Additional Cat Collar Info

Fitting the Collar & Putting It On

There are lots of collars and options out there that aren't necessarily the safest for your cat. Every collar I've recommended above is a break away collar so you shouldn't have any worry from a safety perspective. There are still a few things you should consider though!

The collar should be snug so it doesn't pull over your cat's head easily, but you want enough space there to fit two fingers between your cat and the collar. This ensures it isn't so tight that it is choking your cat! Cut off long collar ends after fitting the collar.

If your cat has never worn a collar before then give yourself a few days at least to get your cat used to the idea of wearing the collar:

  • If you have any Feliway Spray definitely give it a little spray first
  • Introduce your cat to the collar and let her sniff it and play with it
  • Leave it in your cats bed or a place she likes to sleep for a day so her scent gets on it
  • After a fun play session and some pets put the collar on for the first time, have treats handy and be liberal with them
  • If your cat doesn't seem bothered then try leaving it, if she does then pop it off and rinse and repeat this process over the next few days

In the first few weeks you're likely to find that your cat is going to get the collar off of her here and there. If this happens just pop the collar back on and provide treats, pets and play time. This helps her associate positive things with the collar. And of course double check the collar is snug, but with the two fingers of space mentioned above. Eventually most cats will get used to wearing a collar if you consistently enforce it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cat Collars

How do I pick the right collar size for my cat?

Measure your cat's neck first, then check it against the collar's adjustment range rather than assuming "one size fits all cats." The Malier 2-Pack tops out at just 10". It's a good match for a kitten or petite cat but likely too snug for a larger breed.

If you've got a bigger cat, the LLHK and azuza go the highest of the collars with a stated range, both up to 12". The ADOGGYGO sells two size options, 7.5"-10.5" and a smaller 6.5"-8.5". Once you've got the right size, use the two-finger rule from the "Fitting the Collar" section above to make sure it's snug but not tight.

Will the breakaway buckle pop open too easily, or not release when it should?

Every collar in this roundup uses a true breakaway buckle rather than an elastic-stretch design or a collar with no safety release at all. That's non-negotiable on this list. In practice, owners report both ends of the spectrum. Reviewers of the ADOGGYGO specifically note that its clasp works as it should, while some owners of the LLHK say their cats worked it off with little trouble.

Neither is a flaw exactly. It's the nature of a safety feature that's designed to give under pressure. For more on why breakaway design matters and how to think about collars generally, see our guide "Should Cats Wear Collars? Absolutely."

Can I take off the bow tie or bell if my cat isn't into it?

On most of these collars, yes. The bow tie or charm attaches via a removable elastic loop or band (see ADOGGYGO, Faygarsle, MEMOVAN, PREHAI, and azuza above), so you can pull it off without needing a whole new collar. The Giecooh lists removable charms and bells, the BoomBone a removable bell, and the Malier a removable bell and bow tie.

One reviewer of the Pohshido also notes its bow tie can come off for a different look. The LLHK 4-Pack doesn't specify whether its charm is removable, so we can't confirm it either way.

Why do most of these collars come as 2-packs (or bigger)? Do I need more than one?

It's practical: a spare collar means you're covered if one gets lost or needs a wash mid-season. If you've got more than one cat, a multi-pack also means everyone gets dressed for the holidays without a separate order. The BoomBone 3-Pack and LLHK 4-Pack are the biggest bundles here if you've got a full house of cats to outfit.

How long should I expect a holiday collar like this to last?

Durability feedback across almost every product on this list is mixed. Some owners report a collar lasting the whole season, others see wear within a week or two. A cat who's rough on collars, scratches at them, or gets snagged on furniture can wear one out faster than a cat who barely notices it's there.
