Riogoo Aluminum Alloy Foldable Pet Cooling Mat

a puppy with a rose in its mouth on an alumninum coolin pad

Aluminium alloy stays cooler than other objects around it, just like a tile floor. This is why Riogoo decided to change it up a bit and go with an aluminum allow option instead of a gel related option like many other pet companies.

On top of this Riogoo has an option that has zero chance of being ingested by your kitty cat and their claws can’t really do much to it either. This means you’ve got another option worth considering if you don’t like the idea of a gel based cooling mat.

How Does a Cat Cooling Pad Work?

Most of the above products are gel based cooling pads. You might be wondering to yourself “Why does my air conditioner need to be plugged in to cool my house but this thing doesn’t?”  It’s a fair question.

The gel in a cooling pad what is called a polymer. A polymer is a special chemical structure. Basically it means it was designed just for this purpose! But essentially what happens is when pressure is placed on the polymer it activates a chemical change that absorbs heat.

This is based on the idea of endothermology. All that means is a chemical change that is accompanied by an absorption of heat. In simple terms, when you place pressure on the mat it triggers a chemical change that absorbs heat.

When there’s no longer any pressure on the mat the chemical change stops and the heat is no longer absorb. The pad will heat back up to room temperature in about 20 to 30 minutes depending upon the environment. Then it’ll be ready to go again!

Are These Things Safe for my Cat?

The manufacturers of these products ensure that the gels inside of these mats are 100% Non-Toxic and will not hurt your cat if they happen to consume it. That being said, you should still err on the side of safety and do your best to stop them from consuming it.

So if you’ve got a curious cat that chews and scratches at things definitely go for an aluminium version instead of a gel based version. They are definitely safe for your feline friend.

If you’re curious about what the gel is made of you can check out this awesome post on Instructibles where some great members researched the most likely solutions behind the gel based mats. It’ll give you an idea of the contents.

If your cat does happen to consume any of the gel it is recommended you call the ASPCA Poison Control Line(888) 426-4435 or get your cat to the veterinarian immediately for a check up. Note if you call the ASPCA they may charge you a consultation fee.

Does It Have to be Plugged In?

The beauty of these products is they don’t require any consistent power supply, they work completely energy free! This means you can put them wherever you want in the house and it’ll help keep your feline friend nice and cool on those hot summer days.

Another huge bonus of not having the plug the cooling pad in is that you don’t have to worry about another cord lying around that your cat might start to chew on. We all know that some cats love to chew on cords that aren’t covered up or completely protected. These cooling mats are totally free of this risk!

How Do I Get My Cat To Use It?

Getting your cat to use a new bed or anything new is often a bit complicated. While cats are typically quite curious, they are also cautious when it comes to new things being introduced to their environment.

The easiest way to get your cat interested is to put something they like on top of or next to the bed. In particular a t-shirt or a piece of bedding with their scent or your scent on it can help get your cat comfortable with the new bed.

Be sure not to use anything too thick though and be sure not to cover the whole cooling surface up. If you do this it’ll be that much longer before your cat recognize that it is a cool area to sleep and they might not start to use it as quickly.

For the aluminum options you may also want to consider a thin pad or a thin piece of fleece just to add a bit more comfort. My cats both love laying on my wood floor and a bunch of other rock hard places so they don’t have any problem with this, but other cats may want something more comfy.

Does My Cat Need One?

There are a few signs you can look for in your cat to determine if you should be considering a cooling mat. Some of us may simply buy this to spoil our kitty and give them a nice cool place to snooze, but some cats may actually need it depending on their environment.

If cats overheat they can experience Heat Stroke just like humans. Basically, the body simply gets overworked trying to stay cool and shuts down. The key reasons this might happen are a very high temperature and a lack of access to water.

Another option worth exploring is a cat drinking fountain that will provide a constant supply of fresh water. Many cats don’t drink enough water because they prefer water from a moving supply. If you’re unsure if your cat is too hot then here are some key signs you should look out for:

  • Restless behavior as your cat tries to find a cool spot
  • Panting, sweaty feet, drooling, excessive grooming in an effort to cool off

If things progress further and your cat can’t find a place to cool off he or she may start to show these types of behavior:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Redness of the tongue and mouth
  • Vomiting or excessive lethargy
  • Staggering or stumbling when walking

If you notice any of this you should get your cat to the veterinarian immediately.

Wrapping It Up On Cat Cooling Pads

As you can see there are a lot of different options out there when it comes to keeping your cat cool on those hot summer days.  But the cooling pads mostly break down into two broad categories: gel based, aluminium based.

Both options work great and they both have pros and cons. If you have cats that like to chew and scratch everything in site then you’d probably want to lean toward the latter. If you have chill cats that just tend to zonk out anywhere comfy then gel based is probably a great option.

Whichever option you choose definitely leave a note in the comments below to tell us how it worked out for you!

Veterinarian’s Best Comfort Fit Disposable Female Diapers

a package of disposable cat diapers

This is an excellent option for those of you that are looking for a short term option. If your cat has recently had surgery and only needs temporary coverage than disposables are often a better option than cloth diapers.

The key features worth noting on these diapers are:

  • Each one of these disposable diapers is manufactured with a wetness indicator that lets you know when to change it.
  • Each one is also built with a comfort fit band that has a leak barrier to minimize leaks and spillage
  • There are also fur-safe fasteners and closures that are easy to reposition so you get the best fit for your cat every time.

3 washable cat diapers in a pile

  • There are 3 colors: hot pink, purple and blue.

Simple Solution Disposable Female Diapers

a package of disposable pet diapers

Simple Solution brings another form of disposable diapers to the market. These provide another viable option if Veternarian’s Best have not worked or you’re simply looking to get a lot more diapers in a single package.

Key options to note about these diapers:

  • The core is super absorbent and designed to lock in all moisture to ensure your kitty stays nice and dry even after peeing.
  • The fur friendly fasteners keep the diaper from slipping off your cat and they also ensure that fur doesn’t easily get caught in them.
  • There are two key sizes worth considering, the Extra Small and the Small. Extra small will be aimed at kittens and very tiny cats while small would fit most adult cats.
  • They feature a unique stretchable fabric that fits comfortably around your kitty.
  • The tail-hole has extra-long wings so these will stay in place even when your kitty is moving around.

Peepers Disposable Diapers

If you’re looking to buy disposable diapers in bulk then Peepers has you covered. You can buy bases of their disposable diapers at a significant discount compared to traditional prices. Key items worth noting:

  • The fasteners are not sticky at all and won’t pull at hair.
  • Tail hole allows for plenty of comfort for your kitty.
  • You can order in bulk for a significant discount if you know you’ll need them long term.

All-Absorb Cat Litter & Urine Pads

a package of absorbent urine pads

If you decide to go forward with cloth diapers then you’ll likely find yourself washing them quite often. If you’ve got a lot of diapers or quite a bit of free time then this isn’t much of a concern.

But many of us are looking to minimize time spent washing things and maximize time spent with our kitties. Even if that means spending a few extra dollars. These absorbent pads can be cut to size/shape and put inside cloth diapers to help control leaks.

They’ll simply help control the frequency with which you’ll have to wash your cat’s diapers and help cover up any associated smell by immediately trapping the scent in the pad in a gel form.

Joybie’s Piddle Pants

Joybie’s are an alternative to a diaper, but they are largely similar in their purpose. The key difference between a diaper and piddle pants is that they are quite difficult for a cat to pull off.

Instead of only wrapping around your cat’s waist piddle pants are similar to overalls and loop around your cat’s entire body. They also have absorbent pad inserts that you can leverage to ensure maximum absorption and minimum leakage.

Some people have noted you can easily use any kind of absorbent pad cut to the appropriate size to cut down on overall costs.

Castle Paws Stud & Queen Pants

Stud & Queen pants are another diaper alternative. Studs for boys and queens for girls. Strangely enough the garments are identical, it is mostly just terminology as stud pants sounds far more masculine.

Note that Stud & Queen pants at the link below are hand made by a single individual as opposed to mass produced. So you are truly getting an individualized product if you go this route.

Stud Pants & Cat Diapers are constructed of two fabric layers. The outer layer is breathable premium cotton. The inner layer cotton flannel.

Elastic is sewn on the inside for comfort and mobility & a hook and loop system is used for closure and adjustment. A washable or disposable pad is required inside the garment which can be purchased alongside it or you can use an alternate pad and cut it to fit.

This video will give you an idea of how to put stud pants on your kitty:

Why Might a Cat Need Diapers?

Incontinence:

This is by far the most common reason you’d use a diaper for a cat. In the simplest terms possible it basically means your kitty is no longer able to consistently control his or her bladder. This is typically something that either has a medical cause or is simply coming with the age of your feline friend.

The older your cat gets the more likely this is to occur. If you have a young cat that is having issues controlling his or her bladder you can almost certainly chalk it up to some sort of medical issue. The most common issue is some sort of urinary tract obstruction.

If your cat does have an issue you’ll notice it quite quickly. Cat urine tends to have a rather strong odor and is rather unmistakable when it is not covered up or absorbed by a litter box. Given incontinence normally leaves behind anywhere from a few drops up to a large puddle you’ll identify the issue quickly.

Illness or Surgical Recovery:

Some felines may need diapers after a medical procedure or while recovering from an illness. This happens when surgery results in a lack of mobility for your cat or a limited capability to control the bowels or the bladder.

This need is usually on the shorter side, days or potentially weeks. As your cat regains mobility they’ll again be able to reach the litter box and use it normally.

Spraying or Marking:

When spraying and marking are becoming a long term issue and other methods of stopping them haven’t succeeded then you may want to consider a diaper for your cat. Diapering a cat that is spraying or marking is usually a last resort.

This is something you should discuss with your veterinarian before attempting as diapers can present other health related implications for your cat.

What Are The Symptoms of Incontinence?

Not so sure what the problem is with your fur ball? Well if you’re seeing any of the following occur with your kitty then he or she may be experiencing incontinence:

  • Does your cat constantly have wet fur on her lower abdomen?
  • Have you ever found his or her bed (or maybe your own) wet?
  • Have you recently found puddles of pee on the floor when your cat has never had this behavior before?
  • Is your furniture starting to have wet spots from time to time even though your cat isn’t spraying?

The above are all common symptoms that your cat may run into as he or she gets older. Just like us humans your cat can experience difficulty controlling his or her bladder as they get older.

What are the Causes of Incontinence?

As noted above, the most common cause of this type of issue comes from age. As cats get older, just like humans, it becomes more difficult to maintain complete control of all of their faculties.

If your cat is not old there are some other potential reasons that could be causing your feline friend to experience incontinence.

  • Overweight Cats: These days feline obesity is becoming a more and more prevalent problem. Vetstreet estimates that over 25% of household cats are obese today. Overweight cats can develop diabetes or diabetic related symptoms. This sometimes causes cats to drink excessively which can overwhelm the bladder and cause urine to leak out.
  • Bladder Stones: Bladder stones are not 100% understood, but the most common theory for them is that certain minerals are found in elevated levels in your cat and they basically the compound over saturates the urine leaving behind a deposit. The longer the issue persists the larger the stones get and the more painful it gets for your cat. (Source: VCA Hospitals)
  • Neutering: Getting your cat fixed is considered one of the most important things an owner can do for long term health. But there are some potential drawbacks as well. Spaying or neutering your cat stop the production of estrogen or testosterone respectively. These hormones help close the external urethral sphincter and without them leaking is more common.
  • Genetics: If your feline friend has had issues with leaks her entire life then she may have a genetic condition/mutation. Your vet may be able to help diagnose the problem more accurately so definitely schedule a visit if you haven’t already.

While this list isn’t comprehensive it certainly touches on some of the most common culprits of incontinence in cats.

If you’re not already certain of the cause get your kitty to the vet ASAP for a check up. Your vet can help identify the root cause and may have potential treatments for you behind simply handling the resulting effects.

How Do I Treat Incontinence In My Cat?

First and foremost, this is a question for your veterinarian more than it is for a website. A vet has the capability to examine your feline friend and take a look at which specific causes may be at fault and then provide an answer.

That being said this article simply wouldn’t be complete without some details on the potential treatments. So here are the most common treatments for incontinence that you may encounter.

  • There are of course different drugs on the market that can help treat an overactive bladder.  My personal opinion is you should not self medicate your cat if you can avoid it. You should instead talk to your vet about this.
  • Stress is often a significant factor that can impact cats (just like humans). Reducing overall stress can significantly improve the health of your cat. Feliway could potentially help reduce stress for your cat. Making sure your cat has a comfy place up high and away from other pets might help too if you have dogs.
  • Changes what your cat is eating and drinking can also be helpful. Going grain free seems to be the most common change to help along with eating more greens. You may also find that gingko biloba can help alleviate incontinence.

What Types of Diapers Are Available for Cats?

Choosing the right type of diapers for your kitty is dependent on a couple of key questions. But before we get into selecting the right type it’d probably help to understand the different types that are available:

  • Reusable Cloth Diapers: These diapers are mostly made of fabric that you can wash and reuse. They’re mostly machine washable, and have pockets inside where you can place an absorbent liner. These liners can either be disposable or washable. They may cost more initially, compared to disposable diapers, but they’re better value in the long run.
  • Disposables: Exactly as the name states, these are just like disposable diapers for children. They are pretty much single use and you throw them in the trash after.
  • The Belly Wrap Band: The core difference between this and a reusable cloth diaper is that it doesn’t cover your cat’s butt. It only collects urine which is a nice benefit for cats that may only have a bladder issue but not a bowel issue.
  • Cat Pants: Originally developed to stop male cats from spraying they quickly also took on the role of minimizing the leaking of blood from female cats in heat.  Similar to all of the options above you can insert a pad to collect the liquid.
  • Human Baby Diapers: It may sound odd, but many people do find success with baby diapers. You’ll have to experiment with the size and fit and you’ll obviously need to cut a hole for your cat’s tail, but there are benefits. Human diapers tend to be much cheaper because we produce a heck of a lot more of them. Most people recommend starting with the newborn size if you go this route.

Which Kind Is Best For My Cat?

So which is the best type for your cat? Consider the following questions to help you determine which option is right for you and your feline friend!

  • What type of problem does your kitty have?
  • Is the problem expected to be short term or long term?
    • The type of diaper you buy will largely be dictated by how long you expect to need it. For example, if you’re only going to need them for a week for post surgery recovery you’ll likely aim for disposables.
  • How many do you think you need?
    • This will be determined by your expectations of how long you’ll need to use them. Cloth diapers can be used effectively for
  • Are you able to wash/clean the diapers in your home?
    • If you’re either unwilling to clean the diapers or you don’t have a method for cleaning them then you’ll want to go the route of disposables.
  • How big is your feline friend?
    • Be sure to weigh and measure your cat and compare the measurements against the specifics of each brand before you make any purchases. Using a diaper that is ill fitting will not result in a positive experience for anyone involved.

How Do I Put the Diaper On My Cat (and keep it on)?

Putting the diaper on is the easy part with most cats, at least when you first get started. First you’ll want to slide your cat’s tail through the hole in the diaper and slide the larger side between the hind legs and under the stomach.

Then flip the short end up over your cat’s back and bring the larger side up to meet it and then use the adhesive/clips/tabs depending on the type of diaper you’ve decided to use.

Now the fun part, keeping the diaper on. Since cats don’t like much of anything but their own fur wrapped around them they are likely to attempt to bite or paw the diaper off. I hope that you have a very relaxed cat that just doesn’t mind the diaper.

If you don’t then you may want to consider purchasing a standard human baby onesie. These will fit around your cat’s entire body and minimize their ability to paw or bite at the diaper. they are also dirt cheap and you can buy them in bulk so you have extras when they (and they will) get dirty.

There also used to be a product called a diaper harness. This product was specifically designed to keep your cat diaper on your cat. But as I’ve recently updated this article I haven’t been able to locate the product for sale anymore.

You may also find this video helpful for putting on and changing diapers. Note that you’ll want to find specially formulated wipes for your cat, not baby wipes. Standard baby wipes can cause quite a bit of skin irritation or even worse in cats.

Diaper Hygiene Tips

It shouldn’t come as any surprise, but you’ll need to put some extra work in if you want your cat to wear diapers. Since cats don’t naturally have anything wrapped around their body it can cause skin irritation if not handled properly.

Below you’ll find a few tips that may help in ensuring your cat is as comfortable as possible:

  • You should expect to change diapers often to minimize the amount of time a wet diaper is pressed against your cat’s body.
  • We all know cats don’t love new scents, be sure to use unscented alcohol free wipes to clean your cat’s skin.
  • If your cat develops a rash ask your vet for an ointment that is specifically for cats.
  • It should go without saying that if your cat poops in the diaper change it immediately.
  • Taking your cat to a groomer to shave or trim the area the diaper covers can make maintenance far easier.

Wrapping It Up On Cat Diapers & Incontinence

If your cat is indeed in need of diapers then you’ll need to have a good deal of patience and a lot of persistence. Cats don’t tend to love wearing anything and diapers are high on that list, at least initially.

It is however the best way to deal with a problem that otherwise stresses both you and your feline friend out. It even ensures that your kitty cat can get around the entire house again and is no longer sequestered to places where spills and accidents can be contained.

Diapers are an excellent option to consider and I applaud anyone that is willing to spend the time and effort to ensure their cat maintains the full freedom of the house! If you have any additional comments or questions regarding cat diapers please do feel free to leave them below.

The 17 Best Cat Drinking Fountains 2021 [Cool & Refreshing!]

Does your cat drink enough water? What’s enough water to begin with? Tired of cleaning and refilling bowls with fresh water cause hair floated into it or your fur ball dropped bits of food in it?

If you answered yes then a cat drinking fountain is the right choice for you. Not only do they encourage your cat to drink more by giving them a moving water supply, but they also filter the water to keep nasty impurities out.

There are loads of drinking fountains on the market, so let’s take a look at the best cat drinking fountains out there.

The Best Cat Water Fountains

Catit Cat Water Fountain

a green and white cat water fountain with a yellow flower on top

The Catit Water Fountain is a kind of like a unicorn, minus the coloring. It is the best in class, but it is the best in class across a variety of different areas of interest. It performs well in pricing, noise, ease of use for humans, variety of options for cats and in quality too.

Catit is also known to be an awesome company when it comes to customer service which is an added perk when it comes to any product. This is honestly one of the best cat fountains on the market and my personal favorite.

Accounting for everything I think this is an excellent product and you can’t go wrong with the purchase. Features worth noting:

  • It encouraged both of my cats to drink on a more consistent basis.
  • It comes in at a great low price of just under 30 dollars.I
  • t is super quiet compared to most fountains so long as the water level stays topped off.
  • It has a large tank that doesn’t need to be refilled often.
  • It is very easy to take apart and clean on a weekly basis.
  • Saves you from refilling bowls daily or from running a dripping faucet depending on the cat.
"This fountain does an absolutely amazing job in my home. Both of my cats drink way more often than they used to and it is a breeze to clean it when it needs it."

The only negative item I've noted in my experience is this:

  • Once in a while the filters start to heavily slow the flow of water and it can stagnate on the top. I've drilled a few extra holes in the green plastic filter holder to let water flow more freely.

MiauStore's Ceramic Fountain

a blue ceramic fountain from miaustore

This is one of the newest entrants to the market and it comes from Miaustore.  This model is an absolute must have if you're looking for a ceramic fountain. Not only is it beautiful, but it has everything you'd want as a cat owner and as a cat too!

Let's take a look at some of the most coveted functions:

  • It has a whopping 8 different drinking areas available.
  • It is whisper quiet and will not keep you or your pets awake.
  • It has a comprehensive video guide available to help you configure it!
  • All ceramic pieces are 100% dishwasher friendly making cleaning it a breeze.
  • You can add on a mini pot of cat grass (grow some yourself!) as a special addition.
  • Comes in 5 beautiful different colors, each hand fired in Europe.
  • Has an optional motion sensor to only flip on when your cat comes near it.
"It’s a lovely thing – very zen! The cats drink out of it from all the different levels and don’t splash water everywhere as with the more open bowls. Also the filter is much simpler than other fountains, and easy to clean Overall I’m very pleased with the fountain." -Miaustore Reviewer Linda

The only drawback I can find at all, and this applies to US customers, is that shipping time can be quite long due to it being manufactured in and shipped from Europe.:

PetSafe Drinkwell 360 128 oz. Cat Water Fountain

a white water fountain with a circular shaped bowl

PetSafe has been around the block and back when it comes to developing high quality pet products. They’ve been around for 37 years at the time of writing this article. That means they know a thing or two about creating a high quality product.

This pump comes loaded with all sorts of great features worth noting:

  • It has a capacity of 128 oz. (3.78 L) which is great for multiple cats.
  • You’ve got 5 changeable free-falling streams attachments to provide options to get your cat to drink.
  • This has a two part filter, a replaceable carbon filter to removes tastes and odors and a foam filter to remove hair and debris.
  • It also has an adjustable flow control cap so you can slow it down or speed it up if your cat is extra picky.
  • The plastic is BPA-Free and the fountain is top-shelf dishwasher safe.
  • A pump can be purchased separately if it happens to break.
  • Also note it doesn’t require a filter to operate if you don’t want to buy them.
"My cats love this thing. I bought this  the day I found it (over 5 years ago) and it is still working to this date. If you clean it and keep the filters cycled it'll run forever!"

The key drawback worth noting on this model:

  • This model runs quite loud compared to other models.

PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Dog and Cat Water Fountain, Ceramic, 70 oz

a cat water fountain shaped like a pagoda with two levels

This ceramic fountain uses a quiet pump to push the water up and out of two streams at the top of the pump. The foam filter removes debris and hair and the activated carbon filter removes any bad tastes and odor from the water.

The water in your pet’s Pagoda fountain is constantly moving, inhibiting the growth of bacteria while also encouraging your pet to drink more.

  • Dual free-falling streams add oxygen for freshness and encourage pets to drink more water.
  • It has a carbon water filter that removes bad tastes and odors, keeping water fresh.
  • This model is ceramic and thus more hygienic than plastic models.
  • This is an excellent option for a single cat since it has an overall capacity of 70 oz.
  • There are both an upper and lower location to drink from.
  • Nice and easy to clean since it is top shelf dishwasher safe.
  • It can also be run without a filter in case you’re using filtered water already.
"Works great for my adult cat (12 pounds) and my brand new kitten (2 pounds)! They both love it!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • The pump can sometimes have difficulty with pulling water through the carbon filter. You can remove the filter to resolve this problem, but it does expose the pump to jams.

PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain

a pour spout style water fountain

The Petsafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain is a100% BPA free & dishwasher safe.  The rubber feet keep it from sliding around wood floors too!

The fountain features a huge built in reservoir, 168 oz. in total. This means it doesn’t require refills on a daily basis like some smaller capacity models. The pump is an adjustable flow pump so you can figure out the right speed to keep your cats interested in the fountain.

A few key items worth noting

  • The plastic the fountain is made from is BPA Free.
  • The fountain is 100% dishwasher safe.
  • The pump has an adjustable flow to slow things down or speed them up.
  • It has a huge reservoir size at 168 oz.
  • Has a built in pre-filter to help maintain the integrity of the pump, but note you can’t replace the pump.
  • Uses a carbon filter to keep the water clean for your cat(s).
"This fountain lasts forever. I've had mine for years! With proper maintenance you'll probably never need another fountain.

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • This model can be a bit of a hassle to deconstruct and clean each time.

Mospro Cat 2L Water Fountain – Super Quiet Flower

a tiny kitten and a square shaped drinking fountain

Mospro is a less known name in the cat product industry, but wow have they made their mark with this fountain. And for good reason too, this fountain is worth raving about. It definitely has some of the best reviews of any fountain I've managed to find online. People are a fan no matter where you look at it!

That aside, there are tons of great features and functions worth calling out:

  • It has a solid 2 liter capacity which is plenty for a single cat for about a week before the pump starts to run low.
  • It is constructed of antibacterial PP resin and the bowl is BPA-free, non-toxic and odorless. It even has a food-grade certification to show you how safe it is!
  • It is built so you can quickly deconstruct it to clean it and reconstruct it after.
  • The pump is incredibly quiet and you’ll hardly hear the sound of the water.
  • The pump is tested to run up to a total of 10,000 hours and it can even run dry for up to one week in case you forget to refill it.
  • There are 3 different settings for the water: waterfall, bubble and fountain mode.
  • The recessed sink and water circulation system are designed to increase the contact area of water and air, and provide more oxygen to the water, bringing health and vitality to pets.
  • To ensure you have odorless and tasteless water it uses replaceable activated carbon filters.
  • Given design this model can run without the carbon filter, but since the carbon and mesh filters are combined be careful of damaging the pump as debris from your pets gets in the water .
"Such an amazing addition to the house. We keep it right in the bedroom for our cats at night and it is so quiet we hardly even notice it."

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • Some owners have had difficulty with the pump lifetime.

Pedy Cat Automatic Cat Flower Water Fountain

a square fountain with a green top that says PEDY on it

Pedy Cat has followed a tried and true method in creating their own version of the cat water fountain. This fountain looks very similar to that made by Catit and in general the features are very similar as well. This model comes in a bit cheaper than the Catit version which is the key differentiator

Key features and functions worth noting:

  • It has a total capacity of 2L which is about 68 oz. You’ll be refilling it once a week or so to ensure the noise level stays low and the pump doesn’t dry out.
  • Other similar models can end up overflowing if the filter hasn’t been changed, this model has multiple overflow holes to ensure drainage.
  • The fountain is made of antibacterial PP plastic and is BPA free. It has a food-grade certification to gain your confidence.
  • The pump is ultra quiet and is expected to operate for 20,000 hrs.
  • It is super easy to deconstruct it and hand wash each part with dish soap. It can be done in less than ten minutes.
  • It has a multi stage filter to remove sediment and debris, as well as remove tastes, odors and toxins.
  • You can run this model without the filter if you’d like, but the pump will be more susceptible to damage.
"It looks adorable and it was easy as pie to put it together! The cats love it."

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • This model causes more splashing than the Catit option and it may soak your floor.

Pioneer Pet Raindrop Stainless Steel Pet Drinking Fountain

a highly reflective stainless steel drinking fountain shaped like a tear drop

The Pioneer Pet Raindrop Stainless Steel Fountain designed with one key feature in mind, it is made of stainless steel.  If you don’t like the idea of your cat drinking from plastic then this is a huge perk.

Stainless steel is safer int that it isn’t porous so it can’t harbor bacteria as easily as plastic. The second important features is that this doesn’t provide the waterfall or the human drinking fountain type water supply. Instead it uses a water slide.

If your kitty likes a gentle flow this a great option that is also very sanitary.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind though, the fountain has a pretty low water capacity. While it won’t necessarily run out of water quickly it will end up making a lot more noise as the amount of water in the fountain gets lower and lower.

The open design allows lots of hair and other things floating through the air into the filter, but if you clean it consistently this won’t be a problem.

  • It has a capacity of 60oz of water & uses a charcoal filter to keep the water clean
  • Stainless steel is 100% dishwasher safe & more sanitary than plastic
  • It provides a nice gentle flow of water as opposed to falling water like many other pumps
  • It is a great looking water fountain compared to plastic
  • There are two available drinking areas for your cats to ensure they have options available to them
  • If the pump breaks you can buy a replacement
"Stainless is the way to go. You can throw this thing right in the dish washer and save the hassle of hand washing it!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • The way the wires are connected to the pump motor causes them to crimp and snap. The more frequently you clean it the more likely this becomes a problem.

Pioneer Pet Raindrop Ceramic Drinking Fountain

a black cermaic basin for cats to drink out of

The Pioneer Pet Raindrop Ceramic Pet Drinking Fountain is a high quality fountain designed with a few features in mind. It is made of ceramic namely. This is benefit to folks who dislike plastic.

Ceramic is safer because it isn’t as porous as plastic. This means it can’t harbor bacteria which means it is less likely to get your little fur ball sick.

The second major feature is it uses a slide instead of a full on waterfall. The water shoot out like a human drinking fountain.  This means if you’ve got a cat that likes a gentle flow instead of splashing or falling water this is the fountain for you.

It also comes in both black and white if you want to match decor.

  • It has a total capacity of 60 oz. of water
  • Ceramic is dishwasher safe so it is very easy to keep it clean
  • It provides a nice gentle flow of water as opposed to falling water like many other pumps
  • It is a great looking water fountain given that it isn’t traditional plastic, it has a sheen on it
  • There are two areas to drink from for your feline friend
  • A broken pump can be replaced without buying a whole new water fountain
"After over 5 years of owning cat fountains and going through over at least 10 I can honestly say this is the best one I've used!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • Given the lower capacity you can easily end up burning the motor out if

Cat Mate Pet Fountain – 70 Fluid Oz

a tri level fountain for cats to drink from made by Cat Mate

The Cat Mate Water Fountain is a great choice among the plastic fountains on the market. It has a special pump design called the Isolated Pump System which keeps the pump as quiet as possible.  The IPS is the highlight of the model.

The second feature is giving your feline friends multiple drinking locations. There are three pools the slides between them. This ensures that even cats with different preferences will have options.

Key items worth noting on this drinking fountain:

  • The pump is one of the quietest on the market being an IPS – perfect for small homes or apartments
  • Drinking areas at three different heights mean lots of options for your cats
  • The plastic bowls are 100% dishwasher safe so you disinfect them often and easily
  • The pump has adjustable flow, perfect for picky cats
  • It is very affordable and replacement filters are affordable
  • It has an extra-long power cord (10 ft) which is a perk
  • You can buy a replacement pump without replacing the whole fountain
"Although you do have to clean it on a very consistent basis it is definitely one of the best fountains I have owned for my little princess!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • The open nature of this fountain makes it easy for things to grow in it, constant cleaning is a necessity.

Uniclife Cat Water Fountain with LED Light

a water spout style fountain with a puppy and a cat next to it

This is Uniclife’s flagship model for cat and dog water fountains, as I’m sure you can see from the photo above. You might also note that it is on the smaller side. This model is great for single cat households and works will for kittens because it sits much lower than many other models do.

Many models sit as high as 8 inches which can be very difficult for a young kitten to reach, this model is only about 4 inches tall meaning the bowl sits right near the ground and can be easily accessed.

A few other features worth noting:

  • This version is much more like a human drinking fountain than many other options, it actually has a jet of water pumping out. This makes water fresh, clean and better tasting. And the movement of the water encourages cats to drink more.
  • There is an adjustable flow control to increase or decrease the speed of the water pumping out.
The blue LED in the water area makes it easier for your pet to find the water at night and ensure you don’t trip over it.
  • It is made of high BPA free plastic that is food grade meaning it is nontoxic and odorless.
  • A dual layer filter uses carbon to extract bad tastes and odors while foam catches hair and debris to ensure the pump isn’t damaged.
  • It has a 60oz water capacity which is great for a couple kittens or a single adult cat for about a week.
"I'm happy as a clam with this purchase. All you hear is a gentle flow of water when it is running!"

PetSafe Drinkwell 2 Gallon Dog and Cat Water Fountain

a very large fountain for pets to drink from, dark grey

If you’ve got a multi pet household, especially one with dogs and cats, then this is an excellent model for you. Not only is the capacity huge, but because the capacity is huge it is also very difficult for even large animals to accidentally knock it over or tip it and spill the water.

Petsafe knows that tons of families have this multi pet situation and they wanted to ensure there was an option that could accommodate all the pets easily. Let’s look at the detailed features:

  • The capacity is 256 oz (7.5 liters) which is huge and will easily support multiple cats or cat/dog households.
  • The water fall helps encourage your cats to drink more and helps infuse more oxygen into the water as it falls.
  • The water flow can be adjusted to enable you to customize the speed for your pets.
It is made of BPA free plastic and you can easily deconstruct it for cleaning.
  • It is specifically designed to not have difficult to reach corners and crevices meaning faster cleaning too.
  • Foam filter catches hair and dirt before they reach the pump, and the constant water circulation in the bowl helps prevent bacteria growth.
"By far the best option on the market if you've got numerous pets in the house and any of them are HUGE!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • Because of the gigantic size it can be a pain to clean it. It won't fit in many smaller sinks.

Petmate Fresh Flow Rain Battery Fountain

a battery operated fountain for cats

If you’ve got a specific location you need to place your fountain in but it doesn’t have a plug available then you might need a battery operated option. This is the only battery operated fountain on the market so it would be your go to.

I would note that this is a newer product to the market and so far it has had some hiccups that need to be fixed before it will be as reliable as plug driven models. That being said if you need a battery operated model this is your best option.

Key items worth noting:

  • It requires 4 D batteries to operate, battery life is hard to predict given the variations in battery brands and types
  • It has a 75 oz. capacity which is plenty for a cat for a week
  • The pump pushes water from the reservoir up to the top and it then falls through the tube in the middle and into the pool below
  • To conserve power it only pumps water about every 20 minutes (keep in mind this limits filtering/movement)
  • Two different types of water flow and two different locations encourage
  • Lid allows water to pool at the top, creating a secondary drinking location
"If you don't have a power plug available and you need a fountain this is pretty much the only option out there. It fits a very specific need."

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • This product does not run constantly. It isn't meant to. It only runs every once in a while to cycle water which may not be a good fit for your cat.

Heyrex Torus Self-Filling Cat Water Bowl

a grey colored gravity driven auto filling bowl

If you have a need to provide a water source in a location without a plug and you don’t want to try a battery operated model then this is a solid tried and tested option. While this was originally designed for dogs it is a viable option for cats.

Note that it is more of a bowl than a fountain. It won’t constantly cycle water nor will it consistently filter it. This is an option for those of you that might not have other options given the situation you’re in. Basically, as water is consumed more water comes out from the covered area into the bowl.

Key things worth noting:

  • It has a solid capacity for a single cat at about 2 liters (68 oz)
  • It is travel friendly and you can easily take it with you if your cat is going on a tripIt maintains limited water in the bowl to decrease the amount of water that might get dirty
  • You can easily flip the closure switch, dump dirty water out of it, and flip it again for new clean water to flow out
  • It is very low to the ground meaning it is difficult to flip over or tip
"If you're going on a trip with your cat it is a great and easy option to work with."

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • It doesn't have a constant flow of water like a traditional fountain would.

iPettie Tritone Ceramic Pet Drinking Fountain, Water Fountains for Cats 2.1

a ceramic fountain with a cat behind it wearing reindeer antlers

iPettie brings their own ceramic model to the market and you’ll definitely notice some similarities to the YOUTHINK model above. The filters and the pump are largely interchangeable because the products are so similar, but they are sold by two different companies at different price points.

The main difference you’ll likely encounter with them is just customer service and since both of them sell through Amazon you’ll likely not have any issues if you run into a broken product.

Key features worth noting:

  • This fountain is made of high-quality natural ceramic that is completely non-toxic.
  • It has a 2.1L/71oz capacity which is enough for a cat to drink for about a week before you’ll want to top it off to ensure the pump doesn’t get noisy.
  • There are three free-falling streams of water that will help oxygen to the water which promotes overall health.
  • There’s a two stage filter system, the first stage is a foam filter to remove hair and debris.
  • The second phase is a carbon and charcoal filter that removes nasty odors and bad tastes from the water.
  • The pump is whisper quiet so the only noise you’re likely to hear is the water dripping into the reservoir, keeping it topped off minimizes this.
  • It is super easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning and maintenance
"Got my old kitty to start drinking again which was a huge relief since she had stopped drinking from her tall water glass!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • Replacement filters for this model run on the expensive side so overall cost is high.

PetSafe Drinkwell Multi-Tier Cat Water Fountain,100 oz

a two tier fountain from petsafe

Another great model from PetSafe, this is the multi tiered drink well! It easily accommodates multi pet households with its huge reservoir (100 oz) and varying locations to drink from. It has a huge open area of water too which is a nice perk in the case that the power happens to go out.

Key features worth noting on this model:

  • The pump is submersible (and you’ll want it submersed) and provides a very quiet experience.
  • This model is safe for the dishwasher, top shelf only.
  • The plastic it is made from is BPA free to keep your kitty safe and sound from toxins! This model can be run without the carbon filter if desired.
"The cats love it and it is SO easy to clean because it is dishwasher safe. It comes right out of the dishwasher and back to work!"

It is worth considering the following before purchasing:

  • If you don't have a dishwasher available this model can be frustrating to clean by hand.

  • There are 3 different ways your kitties can drink from it: from the top, the falling water, or in the bottom the always available pool.

Additional Information

Why is Water Consumption Important?

Water consumption is important because dehydration can cause health issues in a cat just like it can in a human. On top of this cats don’t have a sense of thirst like humans do. This means they don’t tend to go out of their way to drink like we do.

Dehydration can cause all sorts of health issues from minor problems all the way to potentially deadly issues. The most common are kidney issues and urinary tract issues which can be incredibly painful and difficult to get rid of.

The short of it is that you’ll want to ensure your cat drinks plenty of water to keep them healthy! You can read more details about that here.

How Much Capacity Do I Need?

Many things factor into how much capacity you’ll need, but the primary items are your environment and how much your cat drinks on a daily basis.

Most vets recommend somewhere between 8-10 oz. of water per day. Now if your cat is eating wet food that amount comes down because they are getting moisture from the wet food already. If you want to dig into the guts of it you can read in this article that covers the specifics on how much water a cat should drink daily.

But a simple calculation of 10oz a day will tell you that a 70 oz capacity fountain will last about a week with limited interaction from the humans. That’s of course assuming you get little to no evaporation from your environment which is a poor assumption.

Basically, if you want minimal interaction, say weekly, you’ll want over 100 oz of capacity for a single cat.  I personally don’t mind topping off my fountain on a daily basis, it is easy with just a cup of water.  But you’ll want to judge this yourself and choose a model accordingly.

How Often Do I Change The Filter

Changing the filter will depend on many factors, but you willneed to change the filter on a relatively consistent basis.  The major items that factor in will be:

  • Model Design: Open models with large pools of water tend to get more floating hair and debris in them and the filter has to filter it out.
  • Number of Cats: The more cats the dirtier your fountain will get. This is due to both hair floating in the air and them drinking from it.
  • Type of Water Used: If you use distilled or filtered water already this will minimize the stress on the filter, but using really hard water or well water for example may require more consistent filter changes.

If you’re not sure how to figure out when to change the filter you should just be able to take a look at it every week or two and tell pretty easily. The filters will turn gross color wise and they will just feel slimy and nasty on the outside.

If you don’t change the filter it is unlikely to harm your cats in the short term, but the longer it goes the filthier the water tends to get. This is true even if you keep adding totally clean water.

While the filter does a good job it only filters the water before it gets pumped back to the top of the fountain. This means all sorts of other gook and debris float around in the tank for a period of time and they can contaminate the water in non visible ways.

On top of this the pump itself can get contaminated and things can start to grow on it and in it if the filter isn’t changed.

Do I Have to Clean It?

cleaning up stray hairs

Changing the filter and cleaning your cat’s fountain go hand in hand. It should go without saying that you’ll have to clean it on a pretty consistent basis. If you need to change the filter you should probably clean the pump.

I personally thoroughly clean my entire fountain, pump included, every two weeks. I just do it every other Saturday for the sake of ease. It only takes 10 minutes and it ensures it doesn’t get disgusting.

Cleaning it out should be a straight forward process, but every model is a little different. These are the generic steps I use to clean mine:

  1. Deconstruct the fountain & separate the filter & motor from the other parts
  2. Wash the basin & distributors with a non abrasive cleaner (dish soap is fine)
  3. If the filter contains too much gunk (cat hair and such) then you should replace it
  4. If the pump appears dirty then open it and clean it with a cotton swab and a pair of tweezers
    1. Be extra careful with the pump motor because it is fragile and some of them can’t be replaced easily
  5. Reconstruct the fountain and fill it with water before turning it back on

Note some models you can’t get directly to the motor and some you can’t open the motor up even if you can get to it. These directions

What Are The Benefits of Ceramic?

Ceramic fountains have been around for a few years now, but they are not nearly as common as plastic fountains. This is for a few reasons, but the primary reason is ceramic costs more to make and it is heavier so more costly to ship.

That being said there are a few benefits worth noting for owners and cats alike:

  1. Ceramic will not scratch easily: Plastics can scratch and dent quite easily and this lets bacteria seep into them. Ceramic doesn’t have this issue.
  2. Ceramic looks excellent: Ceramics tend to have a beautiful reflective sheen to them that most plastics simply don’t. If you’re looking to match decor ceramic can be an excellent choice.
  3. Ceramic is 100% dishwasher safe: Ceramics are dishwasher safe. They can withstand super hot temperatures and not melt like some plastics. This is great for deep cleans and disinfecting your fountain.

What Are The Benefits of Stainless Steel?

pioneer pet rainbow image

Stainless Steel fountains have become more and more prominent in the last few years. There are a couple of key reasons for this:

  1. Stainless Steel is not a porous material: Many plastics can absorb things that flow through them, in particular bacteria. This can be dangerous for your cats, especially if you’re not on top of cleaning your water fountain on a consistent basis.
  2. Stainless Steel isn’t produced with toxic chemicals:Plastics used for anything pet related have significantly changed in the past few years and it is rare to find any with toxins, but using stainless is an additional level of safety.
  3. Stainless Steel looks great: It has a beautiful shine to it and it is easy to wash and clean any blemishes with dish soap.
  4. Stainless is 100% dishwasher safe: You can disinfect it using any dishwasher of any temperature and not risk damaging it at all.
  5. Stainless Steel is durable: Cats and dogs can be rambunctious and it is easy for a fountain to get tipped over when they are having fun. Stainless steel is unlikely to chip, flake, shatter, etc. The worst you might get is a dent.

Why Not Let Them Use The Sink?

There’s nothing particularly dangerous about letting your cat use the sink to get a drink of water, but it does have other potential drawbacks.

First and foremost if you want your cat to use the sink for moving water you’ll have to approach it one of a couple ways:

  1. You’ll need to be there to turn the faucet on
  2. You’ll need to get a faucet adapter and train your cat to use it
  3. You’ll need to leave your faucet on a constant drip so your cat always has access

I’m not a fan of any of the methods above for numerous reasons. I want my cats to have access to water all the time so that knocks out the first one.

I don’t want to waste a ton of water by letting it drip all day all night and have my cats take a drink 2 minutes of the day. That knocks out the third one.

Faucet Adapters are actually really cool and slick products, but they require quite a bit of know how to setup and they also can’t be moved or relocated. You’re also going to have to let your cats have free range of your counters if you want to use this method.

I don’t really like my cats up on my counters because they are prone to accidentally (or worse purposely) knock things over. That and in the kitchen especially I’d prefer to avoid having their paws up in places where I prepare food.

Given this I prefer a dedicated place just for the cats, a fountain fits the bill perfectly for me!

Anything Else Worth Considering?

Filter Technology

Most of the pumps I’ve listed will use what has become the go to form of filter technology, a carbon filter with a mesh netting surrounding it. The mesh netting is used to catch all sorts of gunk and debris before it ever makes it to the pump.

This part of the filter is imperative to ensure normal pump operation. Filtering out cat hair, food bits and anything else that falls into the fountain will make sure your pump doesn’t get jammed and break.

The other aspect to these filters is charcoal. Charcoal absorbs toxins can be ingested by cats with no ill effects. You’ll even hear of it being used in tablet form to remove impurities from the human body.

In water fountains it removes odors and tastes from the water.  Given how picky some cats are this could be a necessity for you and your cat. While carbon filters vary in size, shape and quality they typically last somewhere in the area of 4-8 weeks before a change.

Note there are some fountains out there that only have the mesh/foam type of filter that stops things from getting to the pump. I personally wouldn’t recommend only this type of filter, but if your cat already drinks the water out of your tap it might work just fine.

Potential Spills

Given that cats tend to get the zoomies (they run all over the place) from time to time there’s a chance that your fountain may get knocked over. If you’ve got kids in the house or a dog this is just as likely.

You might want to put your fountain in a tray with a one inch lip around the edge. This will help minimize the amount of spillage if the fountain does get tipped over for any reason.

Surge Protectors

You might want to ensure your fountain is plugged into a surge protector. This is especially true if this is your only source of water for your cats and you plan to leave them for any period of time.

Many fountains provide no standing water surface for cleanliness so if the power surges and blows the pump your cats simply can’t get to the water. A surge protector can help protect against this and ensure that when the power comes back on your kitties have accessible water.

Wrap Up On The Best Cat Water Fountains

Most people aren’t really familiar with the fact that cats aren’t prone to drink much water. Because we humans have a thirst drive we mostly assume other animals do as well and that their body will just let them know they need to drink more.

I’m lucky that in my volunteering and in my research on keeping my cats healthy I discovered this pretty early on in cat ownership. My cat Beastling really doesn’t tend to drink much water at all unless it comes from a moving sources.

If I hadn’t found that out she might still only be taking a few laps of water a day from the bowl we had for her. While wet food will definitely help fill some of the gap it isn’t going to fill your cat’s entire need for water every day.

Given this a pet water fountain is an awesome alternative for your feline friends. Not only does it filter the water and keep it cleaner than a traditional bowl, but most cats are far more prone to drink from a moving source too.

More water consumption means better overall health for your fur ball, although it does mean you have to scoop more litter!

Do you use a drinking fountain for your cat? Do you have a favorite or a recommendation that I didn’t include in my list ? If you have any other ideas for please leave a comment below or send me an email at Craig@StuffCatsWant.com so I can update this article.

Top 11 Pieces of Litter Box Furniture 2026: Hide Cat Poo Now

Updated August 2026 — several of the original picks on this list had gone out of stock, so this post has been refreshed with current, in-stock replacements.

If you’ve arrived here you’re looking for a way to cover up the typically not very good looking litter box that your cats use on a daily basis. Most litter boxes are designed to be functional at best and some of them don’t even do that very well.

Those that are functionally effective still tend to leave a lot lacking from an aesthetics standpoint which can be frustrating, especially if you have a home with limited space where you can’t hide the litter box off in a corner or in a closet.

Enter cat litter box furniture to the scene. Recently there have been several companies that have developed pieces of furniture that are geared toward giving you an aesthetically pleasing piece for your home that is dual designed to house a litter box for your cat.

They come in all shapes and sizes and a bunch of different colors and designs. It really depends on what you’re looking for and the type of decor you are trying to match in your household.

So let’s take a look at the best pieces of litter box furniture out there! Below are the 10 best pieces of litter box furniture.

Best for XL Litter Boxes

Amunrbrek Large/Tall Litter Box Enclosure

This one earns "Best for XL Litter Boxes" because it's built with real room to spare. The interior measures a genuinely large 28.5" x 18.5" x 27.6", designed to fit oversized litter boxes without cramping your cat.

It's styled as a modern side cabinet rather than an obvious box cover. That means it holds its own as real furniture in a living room or hallway. A height-adjustable, three-level shelf divider lets you configure the interior around your specific box. It comes out entirely if you're using a top-entry design.

  • Extra-large 28.5" x 18.5" x 27.6" interior fits oversized litter boxes without cramping your cat, a real fit if you've already upgraded to a bigger box.
  • Height-adjustable three-level shelf divider configures around your box, and removes entirely for a top-entry design.
  • Side-entry cat door installs on either side, with a rear ventilation grille built in for odor control.
  • Upper shelf doubles as hidden storage for a scoop and spare litter, while the top surface is rated to hold up to 150 lbs.
  • Reviewers consistently praise how well it hides the litter box from guests, along with its matte-finish appearance and roughly 50-minute assembly.
  • Door alignment is the one recurring complaint. Several owners report the doors don't sit flush, so expect to do some fine-tuning after assembly.

Best in Size & Space

Merry Cats Washroom Litter Box Bench

Merry Products earns "Best in Size & Space" because this bench is built to fit just about anything you own. That includes small pans, large pans, even an XL automatic box. It's a multifunctional cover that conceals the litter box while adding real storage space on the side, not just a lid over a box.

A removable center partition frees up extra room for litter and supplies, or even a second box if you need one. The entry door can be installed on either end, so you can orient it to fit your room instead of the other way around.

  • Magnetized doors swing wide open for full access, and the removable partition wall gives you real storage space alongside the box.
  • Rated for an 80-pound weight capacity, with a pre-cut hole in the back for an automatic litter box's power cord.
  • Fits everything from a small pan to an XL automatic box, so it's a safe bet even if you upgrade your litter box down the road.
  • Entry door installs on either side of the unit, letting you fit it into the room instead of building around it.
  • List Element
  • Some owners report damage to the bottom piece and chipping paint over time. It's worth lining the interior if your cat tends to dig or scratch a lot before settling in.

Best Nightstand Style

Nova Microdermabrasion Litter Box Cabinet

This one earns "Best Nightstand Style" because it's built and styled to actually double as a nightstand or side table. It's not just a box with a lid. It's finished in classic white or black, with a wide top for a lamp, books, or a plant. That lets it blend into a bedroom, hallway, bathroom, or laundry room without looking out of place.

The engineered-board construction gets a powder-coated, scratch- and water-resistant finish. Reviewers consistently describe it as easy to assemble, with all hardware included. The interior fits a standard-size litter box, so it's a good fit if you're not working with an oversized pan.

  • Styled as a genuine nightstand or side table in white or black, with a wide top rated to hold up to 66 lbs for a lamp, books, or plants.
  • Decorative cat-hole entrance keeps the look clean. A wide opening door makes it easy to insert a bed or reach in for cleaning.
  • Nine pre-cut rear panel holes provide airflow, and the powder-coated finish resists scratches and water.
  • Interior measures 16.54" x 18.5" x 17.72", sized to fit a standard litter box.
  • Reviewers consistently call it easy to assemble and "cute." They also say it does a good job hiding the box while giving your cat some privacy.
  • Sturdiness and size feedback run mixed — some owners find it plenty roomy and solid, others say it's smaller or less sturdy than expected. Measure your box against the interior dimensions before you order.

Best Overall Option

The ecoFlex Litter Loo

The Litter Loo keeps its "Most Durable" title because it's built from ecoFlex, a moisture- and odor-resistant recycled wood-polymer composite. That's a step up from the particle board most of this furniture uses. If your cat tends to miss the box, accidents wipe away instead of soaking in.

It sets up with tool-free assembly that owners consistently describe as genuinely easy, and the discreet flip-down front door keeps it looking like a real end table rather than a litter box cover.

  • Moisture- and odor-resistant ecoFlex construction means accidents wipe away instead of soaking into the material.
  • Tool-free assembly, widely praised as actually easy rather than just advertised that way.
  • Discreet flip-down front door for cleaning access, and the Jumbo size adds a bonus storage shelf.
  • Comes in four finishes and two sizes, backed by a 10-year warranty.
  • Sturdy enough that owners have set heavy items, like a table lamp, on top without issue.
  • Size feedback is mixed. Some owners find it plenty roomy, others say it runs small for a bigger cat, so check the interior dimensions against your current box first.

Best for Large Cats & Multi-Pet Homes

unipaws Litter Box Enclosure

This one earns "Best for Large Cats" because the interior is genuinely sized to fit a big litter box, not just a standard one. It offers 27.2" x 18.7" x 18" of usable space. The listing does note it won't fit a PetSafe ScoopFree box specifically. It's styled as a nightstand with a wide top for organizing remotes, magazines, or supplies, so it earns its keep as real furniture too.

Magnetic-touch doors swing wide open for easy cleaning access. The entrance side is interchangeable too, so you can orient it to whichever side makes sense for your room. It's a solid pick if your current litter box already runs on the larger side and you want furniture built around that.

  • Interior measures 27.2" x 18.7" x 18", sized to fit most standard litter boxes for larger cats. Note that the listing specifies it does not fit a PetSafe ScoopFree box.
  • Styled as a nightstand with a wide top for organizing remotes, magazines, or litter supplies.
  • Three rear ventilation holes help with airflow, and reviewers say it works well even in small apartments.
  • Magnetic-touch doors open wide for easy cleaning access, and the entrance side installs on either side to match your room.
  • Assembly is widely described as easy, with clear instructions and generally positive sturdiness feedback.
  • Add a waterproof liner if your cat tends to pee over the side, since the listing warns urine can break down the wood over time. Size feedback is also mixed — some owners say it's roomy enough for large cats, others find it runs smaller than expected.

Best Natural, Woven Look

Snughome Rattan Litter Box Enclosure

The Snughome earns "Best Natural, Woven Look" because of its handwoven rattan exterior. That's a warmer, more natural look than the MDF or particle-board cabinets that make up most of this list.

It comes with a cat litter mat included, so that's one less thing to shop for separately. It's still a full enclosure, hiding the litter pan from view while reading as an actual piece of furniture rather than a box with a lid.

  • Handwoven rattan styling gives it a warmer, more natural look than the typical wood-composite cabinet.
  • Includes a cat litter mat, so you're not shopping for one separately right out of the box.
  • Full enclosure design hides the litter pan from view while still looking like real furniture.
  • Comes in 4 different color patterns so you can find one that will match most decor or design concepts.
  • If you want a hooded litter pan to go inside that fits the look, the Nature's Miracle Hooded Flip Top Litter Box pairs nicely and includes its own built-in charcoal odor-control filter.
  • The open-weave rattan exterior is a different material than the sealed wood-composite options elsewhere on this list. Line the interior with a waterproof mat, since rattan isn't sealed the way MDF or particle board is.

Comes With a Built-In Scratcher

STARY Hidden Litter Box Enclosure

This one earns its label because it's the only enclosure on this list that bundles in a scratching pad. Cats get somewhere to dig besides the furniture next to the box.

It's a fully enclosed cabinet built with a scratch-resistant surface finish to help protect it from your cat's claws, and it doubles as a side table or stand for household items. It's also offered in black (ASIN B0C7VPBF11) if the white finish doesn't suit your space.

  • Built-in scratch pad at the entrance gives your cat somewhere to dig besides the furniture next to it.
  • Scratch-resistant surface finish helps protect the cabinet itself, and the top is rated for a 120 lb load.
  • Interior fits most standard litter boxes, and the whole unit ships with all tools and hardware needed for assembly.
  • Reviewers consistently describe it as easy to assemble (about 20 minutes) and good value, and say it hides the box and contains odor effectively.
  • Door hinges are a recurring complaint — some owners describe them as thin or cheap and say the doors are hard to keep aligned. A handful also found it too small to fit an XL litter box.

Most Luxurious

Refined Feline Litter Cabinet

The Refined Feline keeps its "Most Luxurious" title because it's built from oak veneer over solid wood and ply. That's a real step up from the MDF and particle board used on most of this list.

Rear ventilation slots double as mounts for universal carbon filters, so odor control is built into the design rather than bolted on after the fact. It also includes an internal corrugated plastic liner for faster cleanup and a sliding drawer for your scoop and supplies.

  • Built from oak veneer over solid wood and ply, rather than the MDF and particle board used elsewhere on this list.
  • Rear ventilation slots double as mounts for universal carbon filters, so odor control is designed in, not added on.
  • Internal corrugated plastic liner catches stray litter, and a sliding drawer keeps your scoop and supplies close at hand.
  • Offered in Large and X-Large sizes, with the X-Large built to fit electric litter boxes like the LitterMaid Elite or ScoopFree.
  • Entry panel flips left or right, so you aren't locked into one layout.
  • Build-quality feedback is mixed. Some owners call it sturdy and well-made, others describe it as flimsy for a piece this size — so take your time and follow the assembly instructions closely.

Easiest Human Use

Good Pet Stuff Hidden Litter Box

This one keeps its "Easiest Human Use" title because it's genuinely simple to live with. There's no assembly puzzle — just a planter-shaped box with a removable top.

It's made in the USA from reinforced plastic, and disguised as a decorative planter in faux palm or philodendron styles, so it actually reads as a houseplant rather than a hidden litter box. A built-in carbon filter manages odor while still letting the box breathe.

  • Disguised as a decorative faux palm or philodendron planter, so it genuinely looks like a houseplant.
  • Built-in carbon filter manages odor while still allowing airflow through the unit.
  • Removable top makes scooping and cleaning simple, and the design works for multi-cat households, not just one cat.
  • Praised for its compact footprint, a good option if you're working with a small apartment or a tight corner.
  • Made in the USA from reinforced plastic, with an improved locking fit between the top and base.
  • Opinions split on durability. Some owners say it holds up fine, others describe the top piece as flimsy, so handle it gently when you remove it to scoop.

Best Dual Use

Internet's Best Decorative Litter Hider

This one earns "Best Dual Use" because the interior is roomy enough to fit both a litter box and a pet bed. That works if you want your cat's whole setup in one spot. It's styled as an espresso-stained nightstand or side table, so it works as real furniture even in a room with no bed nearby.

The wide tabletop doubles as a place for a lamp or books, and a hinged door keeps cleaning access straightforward.

  • Styled as an espresso-stained nightstand or side table, so it works as furniture on its own, not just a box cover.
  • Interior fits both a litter box and a pet bed, if you want your cat's whole setup contained in one place.
  • Wide tabletop doubles as a spot for a lamp, books, or anything else you'd put on an end table.
  • Decorative cat-hole entrance and a hinged door make cleaning access simple.
  • Fit and sturdiness feedback is mixed. Some owners say it comfortably fits a standard litter box and holds up well, others say it runs snug and can feel flimsy over time — so measure your box first.

Best Cat Tree + Litter Box Combo

Hey-brother Cat Tree Tower, Wooden Litter Box Enclosure and Condo

This one earns "Best Cat Tree + Litter Box Combo" because it's the only pick on this list built this way. It pairs a full climbing and scratching tower with a hidden litter cabinet at the base. The base cabinet is sized to hold a standard litter box (or, if you'd rather, a bed) for a private, enclosed nook.

Above it, the tower gives your cat a place to climb, scratch, and perch, so you're covering two furniture needs in one footprint. It comes in two heights — 48" and 61" — and in gray or walnut/brown finishes, so you can size and match it to your space.

  • All-in-one design combines a climbing and scratching cat tree with a hidden litter cabinet at the base. It covers your cat's enrichment and litter needs in one piece of furniture.
  • Waterproof, scratch-resistant surface throughout makes cleanup simple. A padded, removable top platform cushion gives your cat a comfortable place to perch.
  • Two hammocks are included, with one fixed at both ends for extra stability while your cat climbs on and off it.
  • A raised feeding shelf with bowl cutouts sits above a separate storage shelf, keeping food away from litter odor below.
  • Reviewers consistently describe it as good quality and sturdy, with an attractive finish. Assembly is generally manageable, though it takes some owners a while to finish.
  • The litter cubby and hammocks are sized more comfortably for smaller-to-average cats than larger ones, worth knowing if you've got a big cat at home. A few owners also note the cabinet door's hinge screws can eventually tear through the particle board over time.

Additional Information

Frequently Asked Cat Litter Box Furniture Q&A

Do I Still Need to Buy a Separate Litter Box?

Yes, for nearly everything on this list — the only piece here that works as a litter box on its own is the Good Pet Stuff planter (#9). Every other item is a piece of furniture that requires a separate litter box placed inside it, or one you already own that fits.

Before you buy, measure twice, maybe three times. If you're set on using a litter box you already have, check it against the interior dimensions listed for whichever piece you're considering.

You don't want to build a whole piece of furniture only to find out your litter box doesn't fit inside it. Check every dimension carefully before you click the buy button.

We'd also recommend an enclosed, high-sided litter box for the inside of any piece of furniture on this list. Most of it is built from wood composite, which absorbs and traps odor easily. That means if your cat sprays or misses the box occasionally, the furniture itself can start to smell fairly quickly.

What About High-Peeing Cats and Litter Box Furniture?

Most of these pieces are built from some kind of wood composite, like fiberboard or particle board — worth keeping in mind if you've got a high-peeing cat. Urine that sits on particle board gets absorbed, and it will start to smell. It can also cause the laminate on top to bubble and peel, and you don't want urine leaking onto your floor either.

A few things help with this:

  • Caulk the interior corners of any unit so urine can't leak out.
  • Use a waterproof litter mat, or line the interior yourself with a plastic covering.
  • Choose a high-sided or fully covered litter box for the inside of the furniture, to cut down on missed-pee accidents in the first place.

What About Scent Control in General?

This one's about general odor control, not just the high-peeing situation above. Most litter box furniture, including nearly every pick on this list, skips a door flap entirely — that means air, and odor, moves freely in and out of the unit.

Several pieces also build in ventilation slots for airflow and light, which look nice and can help your cat feel more comfortable inside, but they also give odor an easy way out.

A few ways to manage this:

  • Use an odor-controlling litter and scoop often — out of sight shouldn't mean out of mind.
  • Use a covered litter box inside the furniture itself; most covered boxes have their own built-in flap that helps trap odor.
  • Add your own flap to the interior doorway using pliable plastic or rubber, if the piece doesn't already have one.

Do Cats Have Trouble Using an Enclosed Litter Box Space?

Most cats adjust to litter box furniture without any trouble. That said, if your cat already dislikes an enclosed or covered litter box, furniture like the ones on this list will likely make that worse, not better. It's still an enclosed space from your cat's perspective, even if it looks nicer from yours.

One of our own cats developed a real litter box aversion over the years, and it turned out to be about the covered, enclosed style itself, not the location. Switching her to a fully open box, and moving it out of a tight, enclosed spot, is what actually solved it. If your cat is already avoiding a covered box, that's worth ruling out before you invest in furniture built around one.

To help your cat adjust smoothly if you do go this route:

  • Don't move everything into the new furniture on day one.
  • If you can, use a second litter box inside the new furniture at first, to minimize the amount that changes at once.
  • Leave the door or paneling open for the first few days so your cat can explore before committing.
  • Only remove the original box once your cat has clearly started using the litter box in its new home.

Why Do These Get Mixed Reviews on Durability Even When Everything Else Sounds Great?

It's a recurring pattern across this whole category, not just one or two of these picks. The Merry Products Bench (#2), the Refined Feline Cabinet (#8), the Good Pet Stuff planter (#9), and the Internet's Best Litter Hider (#10) all get some version of the same mixed feedback. Most owners are happy with the build, but a smaller share reports paint chipping, a flimsy top piece, or a bottom panel that doesn't hold up as well as the rest of the unit.

It seems to come down to the fact that most of this furniture is assembled at home rather than shipped fully built, so how carefully it goes together during assembly makes a real difference in how sturdy it feels day to day. Take your time on assembly, use every screw and connector the instructions call for, and you'll generally avoid the worst of these complaints.

Wrapping it Up on The Top Litter Box Furniture

Most people don’t particularly love displaying their litter box for everyone to see. Given this there are a few options you can pursue including putting it in a closet or finding a piece of furniture to hide it inside.

I’m fortunate that I’ve got an empty closet that allows me to keep my litter box for my two resident cats, but outside that a piece of furniture fits nicely in my guest room where I keep my foster cats.

If you do decide to go down the road of purchasing a piece of litter box furniture I’d highly recommend you make any changes with the litter box gradually.

Be sure to leave your original litter box in place while you transition your cats to the new location inside of a piece of furniture. And always keep in mind that some cats might not terribly like adjusting to going inside of a completely enclosed environment.

If you’ve never had a fully closed in litter box you might want to try that before you purchase a piece of litter box furniture.  Check out my top 10 litter box recommendations here.

Texsens is the most well known brand of bubble backpacks on the market today and probably the most trusted as well. They were and continue to be been one of the pioneers in developing this type of carrier so that’s no surprise.

Texsens has been producing high quality backpacks for both cats and dogs now for several years. This gives them an edge because they have a bunch of experience and feedback to build their products off of.

Key features worth noting on this bag:

  • You've got the sweet looking space capsule window built in (interchanges with a vent)
  • There is a ton of ventilation, 14 vents in total when you include the 3 in the window
  • The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable to easily find the right fit for you, and the chest buckle spreads the weight out so the straps don't dig into your shoulders
  • Built in security leash connection for an added layer of safety for your cat
  • You can open top or either side making it easy to get your cat inside.
  • It comes with a built in soft washable pad so you can easily remove it between trips
  • Three PVC-mesh sides give your cat a real 180-degree view out, not just a tiny porthole — great for cats who like to people-watch on the go

The Runner Up Astronaut Backpack

The Fat Cat Backpack for Large Cats

The Fat Cat is an excellent bag specifically designed for larger cats. We've taken this one out for real adventures — grocery runs, a 15-mile bike ride, walks through the Chicago Zoo, even a lazy afternoon at the Lake Michigan beachfront.

It is difficult to tell from the picture, but it actually has quite a bit of extra space inside it compared to other cat backpacks. The company that designed it has said it is rated to hold cats up to 25 pounds, that's quite a hefty cat to stick inside a backpack, but I honestly believe they'd fit given my experience! And that's an upgrade from the 19 pound version when I got the original in 2018.

Key features worth noting on this bag:

  • Provides plenty of space for large cats, rated to hold up to a 25 pound cat
  • There are a couple of mesh pockets built into the side to easily carry treats etc.
  • There's tons of ventilation built right in to keep your kitty cool even on hot days
  • The window is placed lower in the bag making it easier for your kitty to look out
  • The entire top of the bag unzips making it easy to load your cat in or let them out
  • Great for short trips or long adventures, I've taken Beast on a 15 mile bike ride in it

The Budget Friendly Version

BAGLHER Cat Carrier Backpack Bubble

This is a solid, no-frills entry point if you want the bubble-window look without stretching your budget — a good pick for a cat who mostly just wants to see the world go by on the way to the vet or during a walk around.

This is also a version where in place of a standard 'bubble window' the backpack's entire backside is see through so your cat gets a whole view of the world! Quite a nice ride.

  • Transparent front bubble gives your cat a clear view without needing to crane their neck
  • Recommended for pets up to 18 pounds, covering most cats comfortably
  • Seven ventilation holes spread across keep air moving even on warmer days
  • Sweat-wicking straps are a small detail that makes a real difference on longer carries
  • The support mat inside is removable and washable, so cleanup after an accident or a shedding session isn't a whole ordeal
  • An internal buckle keeps your cat clipped in by collar or harness for added safety

Roomier Shape for Turning

Cawypety Cat Backpack Carrier

This one leans into a squarer, roomier shape than the typical dome-style bubble backpack, which makes a real difference if your cat likes to actually turn around instead of just sitting facing forward the whole trip.

It also has a couple of convenient carrying pockets if you're looking to bring snacks, a leash, or whatever else along. I love that the whole window pops off for easy in and out for your fur ball!

  • The square build gives cats  room to turn around and get comfortable, not just sit still
  • Side entry and exit points through the bubble window make loading a reluctant cat a little easier than a single top opening
  • Folds down flat for storage, with side pockets and hook holes so it doesn't just become a bulky closet item between trips
  • Built from 600D oxford cloth and mesh, scratch-resistant if you've got a claw sharpener
  • A built-in anti-escape harness adds a second layer of security beyond the zipper
  • The reversible cushion has two sides for different seasons, a nice touch if you use this carrier year-round

The only real drawback on this one in my opinion is that it is sized for smaller cats, ranging up to maybe 15 pounds before it can feel a little small. If your cat is small too, no biggie, but worth noting!

Loaded With Features!

Pecute Cat Backpack Carrier

This is the most feature-loaded pick at this price point in the roundup, so if you're looking for bells and whistles look no further than right here!

It comes with a couple of extras you won't find on the more basic bubble backpacks, which makes it a good fit if you're planning actual outings rather than just quick trips to the vet.

  • Upgraded PC transparent window for a clearer, more durable view than standard acrylic
  • Comes with a folding pet bowl built in, handy for water breaks on longer walks or trips
  • A magnetic pull-down sunshade blocks UV without you having to buy a separate cover
  • Metal lockable zippers plus a built-in safety leash give you two layers of "my cat isn't getting out of this unless I want them to"
  • Large mesh panels on both sides keep airflow strong even with the sunshade down
  • The one-piece EVA 3D ergonomic backplate is designed to sit comfortably against your back, and it folds flat for storage when not in use, great for storage in a closet

Equipped for Comfort

PETKIT Backpack Carrier with Fan & Light

If your cat gets stressed out by carriers, this is the one in the lineup actually designed around that problem. It's got a genuinely unique feature set compared to everything else here.

While I don't normally love adding electronics to things these days (they seem like just more stuff to break), this could be a boon if you're in a hot environment or if you know you'll be traveling when it is dark out and need to see inside.  A few items worth noting:

  • Its "2.0" ventilation system includes an adjustable-power fan for those really hot days
  • Multiple passive air vents keep things breathable even with the fan off, so you're not totally dependent on it
  • Thick high-density sponge padding and ergonomic back support cut down on shoulder strain during longer carries, especially on a roadtrip or an airport trip
  • At 3.5 lbs empty, it's one of the lighter carriers in this roundup, rated for pets under 17 lbs
  • A "hidden zone" is built in specifically to give anxious cats a low-stimulation spot to retreat to inside the bag, rather than being fully exposed through the window at all times
  • Adjustable rotary-dial LED lighting means your cat is visible after dark, a genuinely nice touch for evening walks if you want to show your kitty off

Note: Worth knowing it needs a power bank (not included) to actually run. If you're looking for a great powerbank to support it (or anything else for that matter) this is the one I use.

Maximum Space

Lollimeow 2 Sided Expandable Cat Backpack

This is the space-maximizer of the group — instead of a fixed dome, both the front and back panels expand outward, so you get meaningfully more room than a same-sized rigid bubble backpack when you actually need it.

A couple of key feature worth noting on this one:

  • A crystal-clear panoramic bubble gives your cat an unobstructed view in every direction
  • Dual-side expansion (front and back) more than doubles the usable interior space once you lay the included mat flat on the bottom
  • Nine airflow vents plus breathable mesh panels keep things from getting stuffy even with the panels expanded
  • The hard-shell top holds its shape well, while soft mesh side pockets give you somewhere to stash small essentials like treats, a laser pointer, or a collapsible water bowl
  • Padded straps with lumbar support and a buckle stabilizer make it more comfortable to carry than it looks
  • A quick-access front pocket fits treats, a collapsible bowl, or even a mini fan, rated for cats up to 16 pounds
  • Quick-access pocket stores treats, collapsible bowl, or mini fan; perfect for use for hiking, vet visits and airplane travel

Side Loader With 4 Doors

Lekebobor Cat Carrier Backpack, Expandable

This one's built for cats who don't love being loaded in through a single top opening — with mesh windows and entrances on all four sides, your cat basically has options for how they want to get in (or peek out).

Lexi hates being loaded into things from the top, she freaks and sticks all four of her paws out, so this approach is a huge boon for cats like her!

  • Mesh windows on all four sides, plus four separate entrances, give your cat airflow and access from pretty much any angle
  • The expandable back panel gives extra room when you need it and collapses flat again for storage when you don't
  • A durable top rod and side frame keep the structure from collapsing, even with a cat inside
  • 300D water-repellent Oxford fabric holds up well against light rain and general wear, so take it on lots of hikes or even a bike ride in the rain!
  • A pull-down roller-blind sunshade and two side pockets round it out for actual outdoor use, not just short trips
  • Rated up to 18 lbs, on the higher end for this category

The Most Affordable

BEIKOTT Cat Backpack Carrier, Space Capsule

This is the pick in the lineup that leans hardest into actual travel use — it's built with an eye toward fitting the kind of space constraints you run into with air travel, not just neighborhood walks.

Given it still performs well too, I don't know how they do it at this low price point!

  • 360-degree ventilation through circular air holes plus a large mesh window keeps airflow strong from every side
  • Adjustable padded shoulder straps with a breathable mesh back panel make longer carries more comfortable
  • A reinforced top handle gives you a quick one-hand grab option when you don't want to sling it on your back
  • Compact enough to fit most airline under-seat allowances — always double-check your specific airline's policy before flying, since this varies carrier to carrier
  • The hard, scratch-resistant BPA-free shell holds its shape well, backed by heavy-duty Oxford fabric on the exterior
  • A roomy transparent bubble interior comfortably fits pets up to 15 lbs

For Kittens or Small Cats

Vivicreate Large Cat Backpack Carrier

Don't let the "Large" in this bag's name fool you — despite the branding, the seller's own spec sheet caps it at around 13 pounds, so this one's really built for kittens and smaller cats, not a hefty adult.

Once you go in with the right expectations, though, it's a good-looking, well-thought-out bag, and it's a newer arrival to the market that's already built up a small but well-liked following.

  • The front bubble panel gives your cat a real view of the world going by, which is the whole point of these carriers — it helps a cat feel less shut in when the scenery keeps changing around them.
  • Air holes throughout plus mesh side panels keep fresh air moving through the bag, so your cat isn't stuck breathing stale air on a warm walk.
  • Padded, adjustable shoulder straps with a chest buckle help spread the weight evenly across your shoulders instead of digging into just one side on a longer carry.
  • Rated to hold pets up to about 13 pounds — perfect for smaller cats or kittens!
  • Built with a scratch-resistant outer shell over a sturdy base, so it can handle a bit of clawing and everyday bumps without falling apart.
  • Designed for everyday outings — walks, hikes, vet trips — rather than marketed as an airline-specific carrier, so keep that in mind if air travel is your main use case.

Full Window Expander

Keedo Transparent Cat Carrier Travel Backpack

Heads up if you've read an older version of this post: this link used to point to a "Keedo" carrier, but Amazon has since reassigned this exact listing to a different product entirely — it's now sold as a Lollimeow expandable bubble backpack.

The reason we included this option is because we love the full window back along with the fact that once you arrive somewhere you can pop open the expander and give your fur ball some extra space!

  • A crystal-clear panoramic bubble window gives your cat a full view out from the front
  • The back panel expands out to 16.5"L x 9.5"W x 16.5"H, roughly doubling the usable interior space compared to its collapsed size
  • Nine airflow vents plus mesh panels keep things breathable whether the panel is expanded or not
  • Padded straps with lumbar support make it noticeably more comfortable on your back than the strap setup on cheaper carriers
  • A hard cushion base plus an included plush blanket give your cat a genuinely comfortable place to settle in, not just a bare pad
  • A quick-access pocket up front fits treats, a collapsible bowl, or a mini fan
  • On the smaller end from a weight standpoint, for kitty cats up to 14 pounds

The Compact Option

ORIZZP Cat Backpack Carrier

This is the compact option in the lineup — a good fit if you've got a smaller cat and don't need the extra bulk that comes with the bigger carriers on this list.  This one is the perfect size for a cat like Beast that is closer to ~8 pounds instead of a beefier cat.

  • A clear "space capsule" bubble design keeps the classic look this whole category is known
  • Adjustable shoulder straps with a chest buckle are designed to sit comfortably regardless of who's wearing it
  • I love the multi color selections available, perfect for anyone and any color furball
  • Comes with a soft mat plus a honeycomb-structure ventilation panel for airflow
  • It's recommended for pets up to 10 lbs, noticeably narrower than most other picks in this roundup, so it's really built for smaller cats specifically

Backward Expander

TOYSINTHEBOX Expandable Cat Carrier Backpack

This one closes out the roundup with a genuinely useful trick: an expandable back that gives your cat real sitting-and-turning room without making the whole bag bulkier when it's collapsed for storage or travel.

Even with the expander though, this one is rated for the smaller size of cats, so you'll want to check your weight and your measurements before making a purchase:

  • The unzippable back expansion adds real interior room for your cat to sit up or turn around, not just lie flat
  • A panoramic clear bubble window up front keeps the classic bubble-backpack view
  • Mesh ventilation panels on multiple sides keep airflow strong even with the back expanded
  • A built-in safety leash clip keeps your cat secured any time the bag is open
  • Huge variety of color options that can meet almost any need
  • The structured, anti-collapse body holds its shape when your cat shifts around inside
  • Padded straps, a chest buckle, a top carry handle, and a side storage pocket round it out — rated for pets up to 12 pounds, so it's best suited to smaller-to-mid-sized cats

Common Q&A on Cat Bubble Backpacks

Why use a bubble carrier instead of a traditional carrier??

There are a couple of key reasons people prefer to switch over to a bubble carrier in place of a traditional carrier:

  1. Comfort: The biggest factor I’ve found in making the switch is that bubble carriers are just far easier to get around with than a traditional single strap shoulder carrier. Backpacks were designed for this purpose specifically, and cat backpack carriers are just a heck of a lot easier on your shoulders than that single strap is.
  2. Safety: The bulk of backpack carriers come equipped with additional safety features that traditional carriers don’t have included. While this is largely because they are often designed for Adventure Cats it doesn’t mean those safety features are any less helpful for your typical cat just going on walks.
  3. Cat Happiness: A lot of traditional carriers don’t provide the best view in the world for your cat. They can of course hear a lot through the mesh, but they often can’t see much through it. This is limiting and makes the trip boring! The space bubble lets your cat see everything going on around them and gives them a chance to check out the world.
  4. Style: Let’s be honest, they’re just plain cool looking compared to a typical carrier. And it is way easier for other people to check your feline friend out as you take a walk! What could be better?!?!

If you’re still curious about traditional carriers (I still have one myself) then I would also recommend you read my other article here on the best traditional carriers out there. It should help you make a decision if you’re not sold on a backpack yet.

How do I get my cat used to it?

When you bring a new carrier home you’re going to want to take some time getting your cat used to the carrier before immediately loading her right into it and taking her for a walk.

While I understand you just got this really cool carrier and want to show it off and show your cat off I would suggest a gradual approach to use. This will ensure that you don’t scare your cat away from the carrier right away and then have to spend weeks getting he or she acclimated afterward.

So how do you go about it?  Well there are a couple of pretty simple steps you can take to ensure that your cat will end up loving the new carrier:

  • When it first arrives be sure to let your cat explore and sniff it without trying to put her in it
  • If you have any Feliway Spray you might also want to try spraying some of this on and in the carrier
  • Be sure to leave it out in the open and place some treats inside the carrier so your cat associates the carrier with positive things
  • Start out with short walks and don’t make the first trip to somewhere your cat hates (the vet or the groomer)
  • Take your cat on multiple trips a week, but keep them short and end them with treats when you get home
  • Over time work up to longer trips and start feathering in trips to the vet and other places

Should I leash and harness train my cat?

While it is not a necessity by any stretch of the word, many people that use bubble backpacks also have a desire to leash and harness train their cat to take it on adventures.

This is no surprise, if you want to show your cat the world you’d also want to let them out to actually get a chance to explore it a little bit.

There’s an excellent article available on AdventureCats.org that will tell you all about the best method to harness train your cat, but here’s a quick rundown just to get you started:

  • Introduce the Harness: As with anything else (costumes, collars, etc.) you’ll want to introduce your cat to a harness slowly to ensure they associate positive things with it. This means letting them sniff it, letting their scent get on it, and of course rewarding them with treats when it is nearby. You can also spray some Feliway on it for an added benefit.
  • Slip It On: Put the harness on your cat, but don’t actually tighten it up. This will let her get a feel for it without restricting her movement. Over time tighten the harness and then remove it after short periods of time working up to longer attempts. Again, treats and praise go a long way.
  • Attaching the Leash: Once you’ve got your kitty used to the harness you can attach the leash to it and take her outside. This is where your let your cat do the exploring. Go at her pace and let her figure out what is of interest. As she gets more used to the world outside then you can start encouraging her to follow you and keep pace with where you want to go.

A few other tips:

  • Always pick up your cat and carry them through the threshold of the door when you’re first harness training her. This makes her think that’s the only way to go outside. Otherwise she’s prone to learn the second the door opens she can bolt out.
  • Don’t leave your cat unattended outside, especially with a harness and leash on. This is an easy way for your cat to get stuck and injured.
  • Always ensure any cat that is going outside is microchipped at the least. I also recommend a breakaway collar with tags with your cats essential information.

How heavy of a cat can these actually hold?

This is one of those specs that's easy to assume is standardized across the category, and it's really not. Most of the bubble backpacks in this roundup land somewhere in the 15-18 lb range, which covers your average adult cat comfortably.

But it's not universal — one pick on this list is branded a "Large" carrier and its title even advertises up to 20 lbs, but the seller's own product description states the real capacity closer to 13 lbs once you read past the headline number. That's a meaningful gap if you've got a bigger cat and you're going off the product name alone.

Before you buy, don't just trust the size label in the title on Amazon — scroll down to the specific weight rating in the actual description and a couple additional reviews from the wild.

Will my carrier smell weird when it arrives?

Honestly, yes, more often than not. New plastic and vinyl products almost always carry that off-gassing smell straight out of the box, and it's come up often enough across different brands in this category that it's clearly not a one-off bad batch — it's just what happens when a bubble window and its plastic frame have been sealed up in shipping for weeks.

The good news is it's temporary. Unzip the carrier all the way and let it air out somewhere with decent airflow — a porch, garage, or a room with a window cracked — for a day or two before you expect your cat to spend real time in it.

Wiping down the bubble panel and interior lining with a pet-safe cleaner speeds things along too. If the smell hasn't faded noticeably after a week of airing out, that's worth flagging to the seller, but for most of these, a couple of days does the trick.

How sturdy are the straps and zippers?

It varies, and it tends to track pretty closely with price. The lower-cost picks in this roundup are more likely to draw complaints about straps fraying or zippers sticking and slipping off track after regular use — not universal, but a recurring enough pattern to go in aware of.

The pricier options generally hold up better here, with sturdier stitching and heavier-duty zipper pulls. A few things worth checking regardless of which one you pick: metal zippers tend to survive more open-and-close cycles than plastic ones, a chest buckle or strap stabilizer keeps the load from shifting and straining the seams, and reinforced stitching at the strap attachment points matters, since that's usually where a bag gives out first.

If you're buying on the lower end of the price range, it's worth handling it a little more gently — don't expect it to survive years of daily heavy use the way a pricier build might.

Will this actually fit under an airplane seat?

Generally, no — not the classic rigid, dome-shaped bubble backpacks, anyway. We cover this in more detail in our Fat Cat Backpack Review, but the short version is that a hard plastic bubble takes up space that doesn't compress, and most airline under-seat dimensions just don't leave room for it, even with the bubble panel swapped out.

If air travel is actually on your itinerary, look for an expandable or collapsible-style carrier instead — one that can flatten down for the flight and open back up at your destination. A few of the picks in this roundup are built that way specifically, which is worth prioritizing if a flight is the whole reason you're shopping.

For what it's worth, we've had good luck flying with a different style of carrier (a 4-sided design, not a bubble backpack) on United specifically — details on that are in the linked review above. If a listing doesn't explicitly call out under-seat or airline compatibility, assume it wasn't designed with that in mind.

Does the ventilation/fan actually work well?

They're a genuinely nice feature when they work as advertised, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations rather than assuming a fan automatically means a cooler, happier cat.

Our fan-equipped pick in this roundup gets mixed feedback — plenty of buyers are happy with the added airflow, but others report the fan doesn't move much air or that the fan-and-light combo stops working reliably over time. It's also worth knowing that most of these fans run off a separate power bank you have to supply yourself, not a battery built into the bag, so it's really more of an add-on feature than something fully baked into the carrier.

If a fan is the main reason you're drawn to a particular pick, treat it as a nice bonus rather than the deciding factor — the mesh panels and ventilation holes built into these carriers do the bulk of the actual airflow work whether or not the fan is running.

If You Don’t Trust Me – Trust Anna Akana

Now if you don’t happen to trust me about how awesome these backpacks are then you should definitely take the word of YouTube star Anna Akana. Here’s an awesome video of her showing what happens when she goes out with her cats in her bubble backpack!

Wrapping It Up on Cat Bubble Backpacks

My personal opinion is that cat bubble backpacks are a heck of a lot more versatile than your traditional style carrier. First off, they look a heck of a lot better!

But they also give your cat a much better view of the outside world while still maintaining all of the important safety features that come with a regular carrier.

Another huge benefit is that you’re going to have a heck of a lot more comfort for yourself when you use a backpack style carrier. It is a heck of a lot easier on your shoulders and your back because it distributes the weight a lot more effectively than a single strap.

Do you use a backpack carrier for your cat? Does yours have the cool bubble to give your cat a view of the outside world? If I’ve missed any of the awesome bubble backpacks please send me a link.

This way I can track down those additional options and get them added to the article. Feel free to leave a comment below or send me an email at Craig@StuffCatsWant.com.

The 13 Best Cat Activity Centers (burn those calories) 2021

Ut oh, your kitty is meowing at the chair again. Her toy must have ended up under it and she can’t get to it! While you get that one out you might as well search the whole house for all of the toys your fur ball has scattered while playing. I know it is always my favorite thing on my to do list…

Enter cat activity centers. Cat activity centers have numerous benefits in comparison with traditional toys. Now I’m not saying they should be substituted and you should toss all your traditional toys.

Both have their uses. But activity centers can be a huge time and hassle saver by centralizing play into a single location and enabling easy cleanup.

Note this article will not include any cat trees/castles. Cat trees and castles take up significant room and can’t be easily broken down so they’ll be addressed separately. Check out this article if you’re looking for a cat tree for a large cat.

The Ripple Rug Cat Activity Play Mat

the ripple rug, a two layered rug that can be restructured for cats to play on it

Most cats love to sharpen their nails on rugs, mine included. I’ve even bought crappy rugs I expect my cats to destroy just so they don’t go after my good rugs.

But I never thought I’d find a rug specially designed for cats so they can scratch it up up and play with it! This is probably one of the most entertaining cat toys on the market. While it is simple in concept it allows for an endless number of configurations.

The Ripple Rug is unique in product design and use:

  • There are two layers to this rug:
    • The top layer is filled with large sized holes and has Velcro attachments to connect to the bottom
    • The bottom is solid and you can stick the top to it to create all sorts of different landscapes for your cats to explore
  • This gives you complete creative control and a bunch of flexibility, it only takes a few minutes to completely revamp the landscape
  • It is a pretty darn large rug coming in at 47″ by 35″ so you’ll have lots of space for multiple cats to explore & play on
  • The rug is made to withstand extended scratching and help stop your cats from scratching up your furniture

Trixie Pet Products 5 in 1 Activity Center

the trixie pet 5 in one activity board, a food puzzle board

The Trixie Pet Five in One Game Board is dedicated to keeping your cat entertained through food puzzles. It is by far one of the most mentally challenging toys on the market. If you’ve got a very curious cat that is always searching for the next thing to explore than this is for you.

Another thing worth considering this toy for is as a feeding puzzle for cats that eat too fast. If your cat tends to get sick from inhaling her food then this will definitely slow her down. The board, no surprise given the name, has 5 different ways to engage your cat:

  1. There are numerous sphere shaped bowls that require your cats to scoop out food with her paw
  2. The pegs make your cat move food between them to the edges so can eat eat
  3. Wave shaped alleys or swim lanes are next in line and make your cat push the food out to the edges
  4. The top is primarily for liquid treats since the slits hinder the cat from using its paws easily
  5. The tunnel makes your cat reach out and stretch to reach a toy or a snack inside

All in all a great way to make a cat work for their food or treats, any cat that needs some exercise will love this activity board! This little video shows it in action:

Petty Love Cat Activity Center with Hanging Toy Balls, Mice & More

a cat activity center with 4 hanging toys and a ladybug shaped rug

This is a more traditional cat activity center that is focused on a bunch of different cat toys centralized in one spot. The toys are exposed to your kitty using a simple plastic arch system and a lady bug shaped mat/rug that sits under the arch.

  • This toy features 4 hanging pieces that will encourage cats of all ages to swat, bat and bite at them
  • The built in mat will help contain some of the stray fur that is bound to come off your kitty as the lay on their back and whack at the hanging toys
  • Designed to easily fold up and fit in a zippered storage bag that comes included
  • The arch that holds the toys up is made of sturdy plastic, but a rowdier cat may manage to knock it over
  • Note: If you have a large cat or a very rough playing cat you may want to skip this toy as other owners have indicated the plastic can break with a lot of rough housing

Pyrus Hide and Seek Pet Paw Puzzle

This particular activity center is specifically focused on helping you slow down your pet from inhaling her food.  That however doesn’t take anything away from all of the fun and entertainment it provides for your cat! The product is made of wood so it is very durable and easy to wash off or rinse off if anything gets stuck to it (like bits of dried cat food)!

Each of the different areas on the toy is designed to test your cat’s mind in different ways. This keeps them curious and entertained so long as they are food motivated. It also ensures your cat gets rewarded for her ingenuity! An additional few items worth pointing out:

  • There are numerous small bowls built into the wood frame and you can drop food in each
  • There are varying covers or tops you can place over each of the bowls which encourages your cat to move them to get to the food
  • You may need to show your cat how to move them the first few times before they get the hang of it
  • It is about 9″ x 9″ and a little over an inch thick
  • It is paw shaped which is a nice additional touch to make it clear it is a pet toy
  • This product is probably the most durable of all those on the list cause of its wood construction

The Lukas Cuddle Cave (aimed at kittens)

a cat cave shaped like a mouse with toys, a scratcher and a tail

Easily one of the most novel of all the toys and activity centers on the market. I’m sure you can see that by design alone. You’ve got a large mouse shaped activity center with a bunch of different options for your kitten to enjoy. Do note this one is aimed at kittens, not adult cats.

As an added bonus this activity center also doubles as a cat bed and comes fully equipped with a machine washable insert that is super easy to remove when your fluff ball dirties it up.

  • The ears have rustling foil built in to keep your kitties attention when they get moved
  • The back of the mouse has a fully built in scratching pad that’s made of sisal
  • There are two dangling pom toys (that look like the eyes of the mouse) for swatting
  • There’s a long tail attached to the back for pouncing and swatting
  • The dimensions: 14 x 26 x 13 Inch and weighs: 6 lbs
  • Note the toy is designed for kittens or smaller cats, large cats will have difficulty getting inside it

The Murica Activity Tree by Trixie Pet

a small cat condo type toy with numerous holes for exploring and hanging poms for batting

This fine looking piece of feline furniture is the Murica Activity Tree. It is lined with plush black fabric both inside and out. If you have a white cat and don’t want it to show then this is not the toy for you!

This may be considered a cat tree or a cat perch by some, but given the size and the attachments I have categorized it as an activity center.  There’s good reason for this given the huge number of ways that a cat can play here:

  • You’ve got an awesome sisal scratching post to keep your cat’s claws sharp
  • There are a total of 12 holes built into the base giving your cat lots of ways in and out and lots of places to play peek-a-boo, if you have two cats they are bound to use these to pounce on one another
  • There’s a dangling pom pom toy hanging inside of the base of the activity tree
  • There’s another danging pom pom hanging from the top of the scratching post

Animals Favorite Cat Activity Center

a cat activity center with 4 hanging toys and a lambswool rug

You’ll note a significant amount of similarities between this product and the Petty Love Activity Center. The key difference between the two is the manufacturer as well as the price of this version comes in a bit lower than the Petty Love version (as of writing this).

Both products do a great job of entertaining your cat, they are mostly variations on the same product. In case you’ve used toys from either of these companies and have a preference I’ve included both in my list. Key features worth noting:

  • This toy features 4 hanging pieces that will encourage cats of all ages to swat, bat and bite at the
  • The lambswool mat that serves as the base is comfy and will collect cat fur as your kitty plays
  • It is super easy to deconstruct it and hide it away if company comes by or you just want to hide it to keep it mysterious
  • The arch that holds the toys up is made of plastic, but it can suffer from the same issue as the Petty Love activity center in that very active cats may knock it down or break it

Poker Box Cativity Center

a food puzzle with four different puzzles, made of plastic and blue and white

The Poker Box Cativity Center is another food puzzle focused activity center for cats.  If you’ve got a food motivated or prey driven cat that needs entertainment then this is an excellent choice. It is also an excellent choice for slowing your cat down if they eat to fast and end up vomiting because of it.

One of the more common complaints with feeding puzzles is they are often dedicated to only dry food given their designs. This version accommodates wet food without any problem at all! Here are some of the key features worth noting in more depth:

  • This center includes 4 different compartments that are each attached to the base
  • Each compartment must be opened using a different method: lid, drawer, rope and sliding knob
  • The bottom has non-slip rubber feet keep the base in place while your cat plays and explores
  • This model is 100% dishwasher safe, throw it right in after a meal or after a few uses
  • It also contains a small instructional booklet with tips and tricks to show your cat how to use it

Brain Mover Cativity Center

a plastic food puzzle made by Trixie with 4 different puzzle

This Cat Activity center is fully dedicated to making your cat think for food. If your cat isn’t food motivated you probably won’t have a lot of success with this particular model as there aren’t a lot of other ways to interact with it. If you’ve got a food driven fur ball that is really curious then this is an excellent option.

This model comes fully equipped with 4 built in puzzles and games to keep your kitty cat entertained and engaged while going after treats or food. Check out the video to see the games in action with a curious kitty at work!  Here’s a quick rundown of the major items of note:

  • Rubber feet to keep it in place while your kitty plays
  • It measures 6.5″ x 8″ so it is quite small and easy to store
  • It comes with a tips and tricks booklet to teach your kitty to use it
  • Games:
    1. The first game you put food under some of the blue plastic balls and your cat will have to push them away
    2. The second game has plastic ‘sliders’ on tracks that you can place food under and your kitty has to slide them out of the way
    3. The third game will make your kitty pull a lever to get access to the food inside
    4. Last but not least is a drawer with food inside it where your cat can pull on the loop

Why Is a Cat Activity Center a Good Idea?

Activity centers accomplish a few goals for you and your cat(s).  The most important reasons are:
cat hunting

  • Centralized Fun: An activity center will help your cat associate a specific place in the house is for playing. Activity centers keep everything in one spot and they are more often than not easy to pack up and put in a cupboard when you no longer want your kitty to play.
  • Natural Instincts: Cats naturally want to hunt, stalk and pounce. Giving them a chance to play and do these things is great for exercising their natural instincts. Doing this at a time of day that you choose is far better than your cat deciding to do it at 3 AM while you’re trying to get some sleep!
  • Health Related: Just like us humans, exercising decreases overall stress and gives your cat a chance to focus on something. Not only is this great for producing endorphins (yes, cats have them too!) but it also helps them keep their weight down. A healthy weight helps deter health problems in general.

What Else Should I Consider?

Age: Definitely take into the account the age of your cat. Cat most of the items listed above are age agnostic, but some of them are definitely more appropriate for kittens or adults than others. You should also take age into account when deciding how often and for how long to play with your cat. No surprise, but the older your cat gets the less likely they are to spend time playing.

Variety: Remember that cats will get bored of the same thing if you use it over and over constantly. This is a nice perk of many of these puzzles and activity centers, you can simply fold them up and stick them in a shelf or closet when they aren’t in use. This helps them maintain a sense of mystery each time you take them out for your cat. Definitely remember to put the center away from time to time and keep them guessing.

Construction: You’ll want to take into account the material the activity center is made of.  If you have a bit more of a rough and tumble cat then choosing one of the sturdier options like the Pyrus (made of wood) may be your best choice. If however you’ve got kittens and you want something super easy to clean in case of an accident then the Ripple Rug or one of the plastic options might be your best bet.

Why So Many Food Puzzles?

If you’ve read to this point I’m impressed with your dedication! You’ll probably also have noticed that several of the activity centers are food driven and force your cat to think to get rewarded.  Cats that are extremely curious and like to explore are far more prone to require structured play sessions on a daily basis.

These cats also tend to enjoy activity centers because most of them are designed to encourage and reward curiosity.  This is a great way to feed your cat and help them do both some mental and physical gymnastics at the same time!

There are certainly other alternative in the shape and form of cat condos or cat trees. Trees provide numerous caves and climbing areas and enable your cat to get up somewhere high which is another natural instinct.

The reason I did not include trees here is because they are normally large and not easily hidden or deconstructed if you need the space. Trees are a great addition to any cat home if you have the space!

Wrapping It Up On Cat Activity Centers

The market is loaded with all sorts of ways to entertain your cat these days. From remote controlled toys to apps to traditional tinkling bells.  Every time I got into the shelter I volunteer at or walk into Petco for food I see something new and improved out there to engage my kitties.

Many of the one off cat toys are often great options, especially if you want to spread out costs over the long haul. But a single centralized spot for your cat to play can be easier to deal with and easier to pack up and put away when you want some peace and quiet.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works for your cat! If you have any cat activity centers you love that I totally missed then please please leave a comment below!

Petstages Dental Health Cat Chews

a dental chew for young kittens

Petstages is by far and away the leader of toys that are specifically made for teething kittens. They have a boatload of variations specifically dedicated to kittens and their teething time period.

They are all widely revered and reviewed positively by way more people than just myself. So let’s take a look at some of the key pros and cons of these dental health cat chews:

  • The key to alleviating pain in a teething kitten is massages the gums and this toy does exactly that
  • This product is specifically designed to cleans teeth, remove soft tartar for overall dental health
  • The netting is specifically designed so it won’t unravel and cause a choking hazard
  • It is filled with catnip and fibrous catnip stalks to satisfy natural desire to crunch and chew (they can hear the stalks crunch)
  • It is super lightweight making it easy to carry around, bat around or just chew on

It might be worth considering the following before making the purchase:

  • As with any catnip based toy you might need to spray on some liquid catnip as the toy ages
  • You may need to switch these out as your cat grows up as they are again on the small side, they are made for kittens after all

KONG Teddy Bear Catnip Toy for Kittens

a pink kong teddy bear to help relieve teething pain

Kong has been in the pet toy business for ages so you know you’re getting a high quality toy when you buy through Kong. This toy is specifically made for kittens.

As with any Kong toy, it is super durable and will stand up to all the chewing your kitten can throw at it. Let’s look at pros and cons:

  • It has a soft and cuddly plush exterior so there’s no potential for your cat to injure herself
  • It has a crinkle sound built right in to keep your kitty fully engaged for long hours
  • It has premium north American catnip inside to driven even more desire for it
  • It is absolutely dirt cheap for a high quality cat toy

You'll want to think about these two items as you purchase this toy:

  • As with any catnip based toy you might need to spray on some liquid catnip as the toy ages
  • The toy is on the small side of cat toys in general so you’ll want to monitor play time for safety

Petstages Catnip Rolls Cat Toy

night time catnip rolls for young kittens

If you’re looking for a little bit of quiet while your cat plays then this is a wonderful option that will help minimize the noise.  Most cat toys are specifically designed to make a bit of noise to maintain interest.

Unlike most toys the claim to fame with these rolls is that they will minimize the amount of noise your kitten makes while she plays with them! This means you can sleep soundly or focus on work or watch your favorite TV show without the noise.

  • This toy is ideal for nighttime play, especially if your kitten is in another room at night
  • It is filled with 100% north American catnip to keep the interest of your kitty all night long
  • It is made of super soft, but extremely durable material to keep your cat busy but not crinkle or bounce off anything
  • The stick shape is excellent for biting, gnawing and chewing which is great to relieve pain in your kitten’s mouth

Keep these items in mind as you decide on your purchase:

  • The product is mostly nylon rope with melted/filed edges, you may want to review each piece and file/clip any sharp spots before you give them to your cat
  • Given there’s nothing novel other than the catnip you’ll want to use these toys in a rotation

Petstages Catnip Chew Mice

a pack of two chewing mice to relieve teething pain

Yes, Petstages strikes again! You’ll be seeing a lot of stuff from these guys on this page. In this case they’ve changed it up for some mouse shaped toys which is pretty traditional.

The key selling point here is that the mice are specifically designed for general dental care for your feline friends. If your vet has mentioned any form of buildup or tartar in your kitty then these might be the right choice!

  • The design is quite unique in that it has a special net around the outside that is extra durable and won’t unravel when chewed on
  • Specifically designed to help remove tartar and improve dental health for your kitty
  • The net helps act like floss between your cats teeth to remove gunk and stuck pieces of food
  • As with most toys on this page it is filled with catnip to keep your kitty interested
  • These mice are on the small side making them great for kittens to bat, carry and chew on

These two things are worth considering as you make your purchase:

  • As with any catnip toy you may need to buy some catnip spray to keep your cats interested if they’ve been out a while
  • They aren’t refillable with some toys, but the spray mentioned above can help

Petstages Fresh Breath Mint Stick

a mint chew toy to improve cat breath and relieve teething pain

Does your cat get morning breath? Or just nasty breath in general? I really can’t say I’ve ever had a problem with my cats having terrible breath, but boy does this make them smell minty fresh after they play with it!

If you’ve got a problem with bad breath or just want a better smelling cat then give this a shot! It smells divine.

  • This toy is filled with sweet smelling mint to freshen your cat’s breath as she chews on it, mint is another scent that often attracts cats
  • Note there are no fillers inside this toy, it is strictly freshly dried mint
  • As with several other toys by Petstages this comes fully equipped with their very durable netting that will not unravel
  • You’ll notice this toy is very similar to the night time sticks in shape and size, it’ll also make a good night time toy

Keep this in mind while you consider what's best for your teething kitten

  • It is much harder to find a ‘mint’ spray for cats than catnip spray so you may have to depend on catnip spray to maintain interest as the toy dries out
  • Because the toy is relatively thin overall it can get easily batted under couches and chairs where you cat won’t be able to get to it

KONG Cat Hugga Wubba Cat Toy

the pink kong hubba wubba for kittens

Another great toy from Kong that is specifically designed to keep your kittens engaged in many ways. This toy is a little bit on the larger side for a kitten toy if you look at it as a whole.

Fortunately each of the legs hanging off make for a great toy for your kitten to bat at, especially if you’re trying to redirect them to toys during teething. Let’s take a look at some pros and cons:

  • It comes with a built in rattle in the head so it makes noise as it bounces around or shakes
  • The Wubba comes infused with catnip to attract your kitten by scent and get her interested
  • The four tails crackle to main interest once your kitty starts to chew on it
  • The tails are also designed to simulate the tail of a real live animal your cat might prey on
  • It does come in a bunch of different colors, but do note you can’t select your color on Amazon
  •  It is another toy that has a great price to value ratio, basically it is cheap and lasts a long time

There's only one major item you'll want to consider as you choose the Wubba Hubba:

  • If you have a kitten on the smaller side this toy may prove to be too big as it is about 7.5 inches long

Petstages Catnip Plaque Away Pretzel

a plaque away pretzel made just for cats

Anyone wanting a pretzel with some mustard after looking at this guy? I feel like I’m ready to go to a baseball game or something!

Now one thing to note right up front is this toy looks big in the picture, but it is actually perfectly sized for kittens a little over 2 x 2 inches.  That means your kitty will look adorable dragging around a soft pretzel all the time, and it’ll be much better for her teeth than the real thing!

  • The unique netting flosses teeth and helps remove soft tartar as your kitten chews on it
  • It has catnip on the inside to initially attract and keep your cat’s attention
  • It is perfectly sized for your cat to bat it all over or bite and gnaw on it or even to carry it all over the house
  • It is incredibly durable which is ideal given that teething kittens will bite it like crazy

You'll want to keep these two items in mind for long term ownership of this toy:

  • You’ll need to refresh the catnip scent with catnip spray from time to time
  • As your cat ages this toy may become obsolete due to the size of your cat or their preferences

Petstages Dental Kitty Chew Wheel

a dental chew wheel to relieve teething pain in kittens

Are you tired of hearing about Petstages and their wonderful dental focused cat toys?  Well, if you’ve got a teething kitten I imagine you aren’t, otherwise you might have already zoned out.

If you have zoned out by this point you’re probably just scrolling through all the toy pictures to see which one looks most interesting. This is definitely  unique on the design side having a wheel in the center and some tied on fabric streams, so let’s talk a bit more about it!

  • The wheel in the center is specifically designed to stand up to hardcore gnawing or chewing by your kitten while at the same time massaging the gums to relieve pain and stress from teething
  • The little streamers on the side are primarily to give your kitty something to bat at, it also gives you a place to hold on to shake it around and attract their attention
  • It is dirt cheap, especially if you just want to pick one up and try it out for the first time

The two biggest items you'll want to consider here are:

  • It doesn’t come with catnip or anything that rattles or shakes so you’ll need to get your cats attention by playing with it yourself or with catnip spray
  • As with any toy made for chewing you’ll want to monitor your cat playing with it otherwise they may ingest bits that break off

Emours Catnip Stick Teeth Grinding Chew Toy

dental chew sticks for cats

Admittedly, these are less of a toy and more of a treat for your cat in that they are actual pieces of wood.  A bit of a change from previous options I’ve shown you so far because they aren’t manufactured plastic and rubber.

That being said, these are a wonderful option for your cats to help relieve the pain of teething and they are also 100% green and organic. Be sure to keep these in a sealed container if your cat is not using them otherwise the scent will dry out quickly.

  • Chewing on the sticks can help clean your cat’s teeth and prevent oral disease by removing dental tartar
  • Each of the sticks is about 5 inches long and they are quite thin (think a bit thicker than a pencil) making the great for gnawing
  • They’re quite durable and you’re getting a solid number of them, if you keep them sealed they keep a long time

Definitely keep these items in mind when you choose these sticks:

  • You’ll want to be careful of these splintering and your cat potentially swallowing the splinters, be sure to monitor your cat during use
  • You may need to trim some of the bark off of them to expose the center of the wood which is the most appealing part for your cat

Feline Friends Fun Pack

a huge variety pack of toys for kittens

If you’re just not sure what toy to go with then you should take a look at getting a variety pack. This pack comes with 20 different toys in it sized for kittens and made to keep them engaged and entertained.

While not all of them are designed specifically for teething there are a few that work great for just that purpose.

  • You’re getting 20 toys for a little under ten bucks, hard to complain
  • There are numerous toys here that will engage any cat and it gives you the chance to rotate them easily

The only big thing you'll want to keep in mind when considering this variety pack is that:

  • None of the toys is specifically designed for kitten teething

Orca Wiggle Worm Cat Toy

an orange worm made for kittens that are teething

This is a plastic toy that is specifically designed for your cat to chew on it like crazy and not fall apart quickly.  The Wiggle Worm is made of non toxic plastic and is infused with catnip to get your cat interested and engaged from the moment you set it down!

Do keep in mind this toy is a bit on the larger side (6 inches long) so if you have an extremely small kitten it may be too big for them.

  • The material is designed to help massage your cat’s gums while she chews relieving the pain from teething
  • It is a little bit floppy so as your cat carries it around it will bounce up and down a little bit making it seem more lifelike
  • It is infused with catnip to get your kitten interested from the moment it comes out of the package

This toy has one key item that you'll want to keep in mind when purchasing it for kittens:

  • The size of the toy may be a problem for smaller cats because it is 6+ inches long, but as your cats grow up they should grow into using it

Cat Dancer Wand Toy

the rainbow colored cat dancer wand toy

This wand toy isn’t specifically designed for kittens, but it makes an excellent supervised teething toy. Kittens love pouncing on and attacking anything that moves and wand toys are built for it!

Wave this around a few times and let your kitten jump on it and she’ll be chewing on it in now time. This wand is made to stand up to lots of abuse, even from adult cats. You’ll find that your kitten absolutely loves it too.

  • It has 4 feet of wand, way more than most, meaning it gets in hard to reach places like under beds and tables
  • It is one of the cheapest and most versatile cat toys on the market and will last until your cat is fully into adulthood
  • The wand itself is super durable, not flimsy like a lot of lightweight metal wands that bend and snap
  • The materials are color safe and non toxic so great for a safe kitty
  • If you happen to care it is hand made in Wisconsin, wohoo for American Made
"Hands down the best wand toy I have ever owned for any of the cats I've had. You simply can't find one better."

You may want to keep this in mind before purchasing:

  • As with any wand toy (and most toys with kittens in general) it requires direct supervision otherwise there is a choking risk

Kong 2 Pack of Kitten Mice

a two pack of small mice for kittens

If you’re looking for a couple of wonderful catnip scented toys that will keep your kitties batting and chewing on them then you’ve found them! These mice have catnip built right in to keep your fur balls interested.

On top of it they are more appropriately sized than many cat toys are for kittens. Coming in at 5 inches (including the tail) they are the perfect size for batting around.

Most importantly though they have crinkle paper inside them to make lots of noise. This is perfect for a teething kitten.

  • Right sized for kittens (they aren’t gigantic like many toys!)
  • Crinkle paper inside to keep your kitty chewing
  • They have catnip inside to get your kitten initially attracted

As with any other toy that you use for a long time you'll want to keep this in mind:

  • If your kitty is especially drawn to catnip it will wear off over time, try some catnip spray to alleviate this problem

Purring Cuddle Pillow

the purring cat cuddle pillow for kittens

This toy is a great option if you have a kitten that needs a bit of a safety net and likes to be on his or her own. The Purr Pillow has its own built in purr motor that is triggered by the touch of your kitty.

When the purring is triggered it lasts two minutes to keep your kitty company. It is a great companion type toy and it is also built for durability. Your cat can chew on it till her heart’s content and it’ll hold up well!

  • Super comfy for your kitty to lay on and even drag around if they want
  • Has a built in purr motor to calm and comfort your kitten
  • You can remove the purr motor easily enough to wash it
  • It is quite durable and stands up well to chewing

Keep this in mind before making your purchase:

  • It does require batteries and does pose a choking hazard if your kitten gets into the purr motor, be sure to supervise your kitten

Kong Kickeroo Cat Toy

the kickeroo cat toy for kittens

If you’ve got a kitten that likes to show how big and strong she is then this is the right toy for you. It is specially designed for kittens to ‘kill’ after they pounce on it. It is extra long for hind leg kicking while they ‘go for the neck.’

But the additional perk is that it has crinkle paper and catnip built right in to keep your kitty’s attention.

  • Built in crinkle paper and catnip to build and hold interest
  • The extra length and noise promotes hind leg engagement for more exercise

If you have a smaller kitten you'll want to keep this in mind:

  • May be too big for some kittens to drag around or move around

What About Kitten Teething Do It Yourself (DIY) Options?

If you’re on a tight budget or if you simply don’t want to invest in kitten toys because they’ll have a limited lifespan then you can try a couple of do it yourself options.

There are a few great options that pop to mind right away to help your kitten get through teething without any big investment.

Frozen Washcloths:
  • Simple and easy, dip a wash cloth in water, wring it out then toss it in the freezer. Once it is frozen you can give it to your kitten as something to chew on.
  • Note this can leave wet spots on your floor and you’ll have to monitor your kitten to ensure he or she doesn’t rip a chunk off and swallow it.

Cat Grass:

  • Cats absolutely love to chew on cat grass and it is also completely safe for them. You can buy cat grass on your own, or you can grow it yourself as I recommend.
  • Growing it is super easy and very cheap and you’ll have a very long term supply. Check out this article on how to grow your own cat grass.
Sock Toys:
  • If you’ve got a ton of lone socks floating around like I do (I swear they escape out of the dryer!) then you can make some home made sock toys out of them.
  • Socks are quite durable and they provide a ton of options to create all sorts of different toys. Check out this great (2 minute) video on how to make sock toys.
Cardboard Toys:
  • Most cats absolutely love chomping on cardboard. Both young and adult cats seem to have a craving for it.
  • It is not a half bad item for them to chew on so long as they don’t end up swallowing it.
  • You can use toilet paper and paper towel rolls as the basis of your toys and then use things like small jingle bells and non toxic glue to make additions. The shelter I volunteer at makes toys for cats every couple of weeks.
  • You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on your cats when they play with homemade toys as pieces tend to be more likely to fall off of them. This is even more true with kittens.

Distracting Your Kitten

kittens playing together

There’s much to be said for keeping your kitten engaged until she’s ready to fall asleep. As you can imagine, sleeping kittens don’t bite that much!  One of the best ways to do this is with structured play sessions.

Really all there is to it is to grab your kittens favorite toy and set aside 15-30 minutes to play with her until she tires out. Not only does this open the door to using pretty much any toy (because you are watching the entire time!) but it also helps you build your bond with your cat.

Exercise is great for your kittens overall health and it is also a wonderful way of getting her to focus on something beyond simply chewing on whatever is nearby to dull the pain.

One thing you might also note is that you didn’t see me recommend any specific electronic cat toys, most of these are interactive cat toys for the kitten or for the human and the kitten.

While you can of course get hands off toys I recommend you personally engage with and play with your kitten as much as possible. It is great for developing a good relationship with your cat!

What To Feed Your Kitten

dry cat food with a glass of water next to it

You also might be asking yourself what to feed your kitten during this wonderful phase of teething. You might logically think that dry food would be ideal because it would help give them something to crunch on and thus relieve pain just like a chewing toy.

While there is some merit to this there is also the possibility that it would simply be very painful for your kitten to chew on hard crunchy food while her gums are already sore.

Given this there are a few options available. You can soften her dry food by sprinkling a few drops of water on top of it. Be sure to try this in an isolated bit of food first to see if she’ll eat it. Cats are very sensitive to texture and may find it gross and simply ignore moist dry food.

The other option you have is to integrate more canned food into your kitten’s diet. This is much less painful for her to chew and is also an excellent source of water which all cats need on a consistent basis. The shelter I volunteer at has the best luck with a combination of canned food and a bit of moistened dry food.

Redirecting Kitten Biting

While there’s no particular difference in redirecting kittens or adult cats from biting you’re definitely in a much better place if you can get them to redirect at a younger age.

This means less overall hassle, and as with any animal, they tend to be more impressionable when they are young.

Given this, here’s a quick set of tips to help you redirect your kitten toward toys and desired surfaces as opposed to your fingers:

  1. Always have toys nearby if you’re with your kitten. If it looks like your kitten is going to bite be sure to grab a toy and put it right in front of her so she goes for the toy instead of your hand.
  2. When your kitten does bite you feel free to emit a slightly high pitched yelp or an ouch and then walk out of the room you are in. Cats, for all their aloofness, do desire your presence and attention and leaving them makes them associate biting with people going away.
  3. Do not allow other people to rough house with your kitten with their hands. If one person does it they think it is ok with all people. Everyone should use toys.
  4. Don’t yell “NO!” This is the biggest no no in training cats. Yelling at your cat will only scare your cat and make them afraid of you.
  5. Common sense here, but never hit your cat, even with a rolled up newspaper. Same as above, they’ll just get scared of you.

Keeping Toys Interesting

Cats get bored of toys. Sad, but true. While this is far less of a problem with a curious kitten than it is with an adult cat, it may become something you start to run into as your kitten gets older.

There are a few things you can do to help combat this apathy toward toys you’ve spent a small fortune on:

  • Put the toys away:
    • Ever heard that distance makes the heart grow fonder? If toys aren’t in use then put them somewhere your cat cannot see them.
    • Not only is this often a good safety precaution, but it also makes the toys seem new when you bring them out.
  • Create a rotation:
    • While some cats go crazy for the same toy over and over other cats do not.
    • You might need to rotate different toys in and out every day or every few days to make it seem like it is something novel and interesting.
  • Catnip spray or a catnip jar:
    • You can buy catnip spray for your toys and just spritz a little on. If you prefer the real thing I’ve also had excellent luck simply sticking my toys inside a sealed plastic container of catnip and pulling them out when I need a good distraction for my cats.

Are Teething Toys Safe?

You may also ask yourself whether these toys are safe for your kitten or not. A lot of them look small or have pieces that could easily be swallowed.

When it really comes down to it no toy is safe for a cat that ends up swallowing any part of it. You should always supervise your cat while they are playing, this is even more true with a kitten.

The toys here were selected as they are designed specifically for kittens in mind and should be more difficult for a kitten to destroy or get into their digestive track. That being said please do keep a close eye on your kitten no matter what kind of toy they are playing with.

Wrapping It Up On Kitten Teething Toys

It is important to keep in mind that while these are some of the most well regarded toys on the market for kittens…there’s still the chance your kitten will not be interested.

We’ve all experienced the joy of buying something for our cat we think they’ll love and they simply sniff it and walk away. Or worse yet, they enjoy the box it came in more than the thing we bought!

Because of this you’ll probably want to try a variety of toys to help alleviate the pain of kitten teething. Most of these toys are on the affordable side, and even if not there’s a few do it yourself options I’ve provided so you can help your kitten feel better on the cheap!

The 11 Best Cat Window Beds of 2026: Buy an Amazing One Now!

Updated August 2026: I rechecked every pick in this guide. Anything that had gone out of stock got swapped for the closest same-style option I could find that's still selling and well-reviewed today. (The window bed in the video up top is still the real deal. That's Lexi, and she still spends half her life in one.)

Everyone knows that cats simply love lazing about in the sun.  They do it all the time. If I could do it all the time I probably would too, seems like a pretty sweet deal. This is an awesome video of my cat Lexi enjoying her cat window bed more than I’ve ever enjoyed any bed ever:

Not only do cat window beds provide a wonderful place to sleep, they have the benefit of not taking up space on the floor like a cat castle.  If you’re cramped for space (I’m looking at you city dwellers) then a cat window bed can be a very wise investment.

You’ll also be providing a nice solid view of the great outdoors for your feline friend. If your cat normally sleeps all day on your bed and keeps you up at night then a window bed might help alleviate this behavior.

When your cat is in the window they’ll be watching everything that passes by with a keen eye. This ensures that when the lights go out later they’ll be ready to sleep. If they still don't sleep at night check out these 17 tips to help get your cat to sleep when you do.

So if you’re looking for an awesome way to let your cat relax in the sun then check out a quick rundown of the best window beds on the market.

Best Overall

PEFUNY Cat Window Hammock – Mess-Free Waterproof

If you only read one entry on this whole list, make it this one. PEFUNY keeps the classic suction-cup-and-fabric-mat setup that's made this style of bed the standard for years. But it builds that setup around a mess-free waterproof mat, instead of fabric that soaks up every spilled water bowl or stray hairball nearby.

It's rated to hold a cat over 40 lb, thanks to a thicker steel support cable running through the frame. That means most cats — even a hefty one — aren't pushing this bed anywhere near its limits. And if plain black doesn't match your window, there's a real color and style lineup here, including a cushion-bed upgrade. You can pick one that looks intentional, instead of settling for whatever's in stock.

  • The mat itself is mess-free and waterproof. A knocked-over water bowl or occasional hairball wipes clean instead of soaking in.
  • The frame uses PEFUNY's own "advanced pipe" construction, giving the suction-cup mount solid, dependable support to lean or stretch against.
  • Rated to hold a cat over 40 lb, thanks to a thicker steel support cable. It's not just built for kittens and average-sized cats.
  • The flannel-lined cushion pad is removable, so you can pull it for a wash without taking the whole bed down.
  • Comes in enough color and style variants — including a cushion-bed upgrade — to match it to your window. No settling for whatever's available.
  • Like any suction-mounted bed, how well this stays up depends on how clean your glass is before installing it. Wipe the window down first, and check the cups every few weeks like you would with any suction-cup bed.

Tangle-Free Pick

Zakkart Cat Window Perch – 100% Metal Supported from Below

This one puts a twist on the usual window-bed engineering. It still mounts to your glass with suction cups, like most beds on this list. But instead of leaving the frame to hang from those cups alone, the Zakkart perch adds triangular metal arms that support the whole thing from underneath. That extra support means there's no overhead cable setup for your cat to get tangled in while she's climbing in or stretching out.

The frame itself is 100% iron, giving the whole structure real heft and rigidity. It ships with its own cushioned sherpa bed insert. It also goes together without tools, so you're not hunting for a screwdriver the day it shows up.

  • Mounts with suction cups like most beds on this list, but triangular metal arms brace the frame from below too. That extra support means there's nothing dangling overhead for your cat to get tangled in.
  • Built from 100% iron, giving the frame real substance and rigidity.
  • Rated to hold up to 40 lb, plenty of room for a full-grown cat without pushing the frame's limits.
  • Comes with its own cushioned sherpa bed insert, so there's no separate pad to source.
  • Assembly is tool-free, so you can have it hung and ready without digging out a toolbox.
  • That 100% iron frame gives it real rigidity, but it also means it's not adjustable or repositionable once mounted. Settle on your exact placement before you commit, since you won't be nudging this one around like a lighter suction-only bed.

Folds Flush to Window

K&H Cat Window Perch, EZ Mount Kitty Sill (27"W x 23"H)

If you like the idea of a window bed but hate the thought of it blocking your blinds, this K&H sill solves that problem directly. It's a steel-frame sill that folds up flush to the window. Your blinds or curtains still work normally, without you having to unmount anything.

It's rated to hold up to 50 lb, and the shelf cover is fully washable for whenever it needs a clean. K&H also sells this one with or without a bolster edge. Pick the flatter open-top version, or the one with a little more of a lip around the sides.

  • Folds up flush to the window when you need your blinds or curtains to work normally, no full uninstall required.
  • Steel-frame construction rated to hold up to 50 lb, plenty of margin for a full-grown, heavier cat.
  • The shelf cover is fully washable, so keeping it clean doesn't mean replacing the whole bed.
  • Available with or without a bolster edge. Choose the flat open-top sill, or the one with a little more of a lip to lean against.
  • Because it's designed to fold flush against the glass, be careful when you collapse it. Letting it swing shut too fast can knock right into the window, so ease it closed instead of letting it drop.

Chillest Sill

K&H Cat Window Perch Bed, EZ Mount Kitty Face (Gray)

This is K&H's same EZ Mount sill design, just dressed up in a Gray "Kitty Face" print instead of a plain solid color. It keeps the same wide-open top that makes it easy for your cat to hop in and out on her own terms. No squeezing through a narrow entrance required.

It's rated to the same 50 lb suction-cup capacity as the rest of this product line. The insert pad is washable too, so cleanup is a non-issue. If you want a sill that looks a little more playful than a plain neutral color, this is the one to grab.

  • Fully open top makes it easy for your cat to come and go on her own, no narrow entry point to navigate.
  • Near-identical footprint to the rest of this EZ Mount line, so it fits the same range of window sizes.
  • Rated to a 50 lb suction-cup capacity, comfortably covering most adult cats.
  • The insert pad is washable, so a spill or shedding season doesn't mean a permanent stain.
  • This shares a footprint with the rest of the K&H EZ Mount sill line, so measure your window the same way you would for the other K&H picks here. It's a fairly wide sill and won't suit every window.

Most Unique

Zakkart Cat Perch for Window Sill with Bolster

Most beds on this list rely on suction cups in some form. This one doesn't use any at all. Instead, the Zakkart perch clamps directly onto your windowsill ledge with a hardwood-and-metal frame. A set of adjustable thumbscrews tightens it down until it's snug against the sill itself, rather than the glass.

It also has a raised bolster edge running along it. That gives your cat something to lean against, instead of just a flat platform. If you've been burned by suction cups losing their grip over time, this is a genuinely different way to solve the same problem.

  • Skips suction cups entirely — it clamps onto the windowsill ledge itself using adjustable thumbscrews. Nothing here relies on glass suction to hold.
  • Built with a hardwood-and-metal frame, giving the whole perch real substance and a furniture-like presence by your window.
  • The raised bolster edge gives your cat something to lean or rest against, rather than a flat, edgeless platform.
  • The thumbscrew mount lets you tighten the fit yourself, rather than hoping a suction cup holds.
  • Because it clamps onto the sill ledge rather than the glass, this only works on windows with a usable sill to grip. Check your window style before ordering if you're not sure.

Best Multi Cat

K&H Double Stack Window Sill

This is the pick for a household where more than one cat wants the window seat at the same time. K&H stacked two full sill levels on top of each other. Instead of one cat winning the spot while the other sulks on the floor, you get a base level and a second level up top. Each one has its own washable shelf cover.

The steel frame is rated to hold up to 50 lb. Reviewers consistently mention it holding up well over two-plus years of regular use — genuinely rare durability feedback in this category. It also folds flush to the window, like the single-level K&H sills above. You're not sacrificing your blinds to give two cats a view.

  • Two full levels mean two cats can each have their own space instead of competing for one sill.
  • Steel-frame construction rated to hold up to 50 lb, with reviewers specifically noting it comfortably supports cats in the 20 lb range.
  • Folds flush to the window, so your blinds or curtains still work normally without a full uninstall.
  • Washable shelf covers on both levels make cleanup straightforward even with two cats using it daily.
  • Reviewers consistently describe this one as durable, holding up well over two-plus years of regular use.
  • Owners are split on the suction cups specifically. Most report them holding firm, but a real minority describe them loosening over time — worth a periodic check rather than a one-and-done install.

Best Value Play

AMOSIJOY Cordless Cat Window Perch

If you want a straightforward window bed without paying for bells and whistles, this AMOSIJOY perch is the one to look at. It's a lightweight, suction-cup-mounted bed with a cordless design, so there's nothing hanging overhead to get in your cat's way. Instead of a basic PVC frame, it's built with stainless steel.

The cushion cover is thickened and reversible too, with a breathable mesh side for warmer months. It's a genuinely solid, no-frills pick if you just want a comfortable spot for your cat to sun herself without overthinking the purchase.

  • Cordless design means there's nothing dangling overhead for your cat to bat at or get caught on.
  • Built with a stainless-steel frame instead of the more common plastic or PVC tubing.
  • The cushion cover is thickened for comfort and reversible, with a breathable mesh side for warmer weather.
  • Sized at roughly 27.7" by 11.8", a solid middle-ground footprint that fits most standard windows.
  • At about 11.8 inches wide, this runs narrower than some of the bulkier picks on this list. Measure your cat's usual sprawled-out length against that before assuming it'll feel roomy.

Steel Frame

Sunhoo Cat Window Hammock Perch (Cordless)

The Sunhoo hammock perch is built for cats who use their window bed year-round, not just in the summer. It's a cordless, foldable design with a metal-and-plastic frame, and it's rated to hold up to 55 lb.

The real standout here is the cover. It's a reversible 2-in-1 design, with a plush side for cooler months and a mesh side for when the sun's really beating through the glass. You can flip it seasonally instead of buying two separate beds.

  • Cordless design keeps the setup clean, with nothing dangling overhead for your cat to get tangled in.
  • Metal-and-plastic frame construction gives the perch real structural substance.
  • Rated to hold up to 55 lb, one of the higher single-level weight ratings on this list.
  • The reversible 2-in-1 cover flips between a plush side and a breathable mesh side, so it works year-round instead of just one season.
  • It folds down for storage, so it doesn't have to be a permanent fixture. Fold it away if you want your window bare for part of the year.
  • This one folds down for storage or seasonal takedown, rather than folding flush while it stays mounted. If you want a bed that folds flat against the glass without a full uninstall, like the K&H sills above, plan on a removable setup here instead.

Most Versatile

K&H EZ Mount Cat Window Perch Kitty Sill Scratcher Cradle

This one blurs the line between a window bed and a scratching post, and that's exactly the point. It's a curved cardboard scratch-and-bask surface that mounts to your window with a tool-free suction-cup setup. Your cat gets a sanctioned place to dig her claws in, right where she already loves to sun herself.

When the cardboard eventually gets shredded, you're not stuck replacing the whole bed. K&H sells the cardboard refills separately, so you just swap the worn piece and keep the frame.

  • Doubles as both a scratching surface and a window bed, covering two of your cat's favorite activities in one footprint.
  • Mounts to the window with a tool-free suction-cup setup, so there's no assembly beyond hanging it.
  • The cardboard scratch surface is replaceable on its own, so a worn-out pad doesn't mean buying a whole new bed.
  • Because the scratch surface is a consumable, factor in the ongoing cost of replacement cardboard refills once your cat wears through the original. It's not a strict one-time purchase, the way a fabric-covered bed is.

Low-Commitment Pick

AMOSIJOY Cat Windowsill Perch (Wood & Metal, No Suction Cups)

If you want to find out whether your cat's even interested in a window perch, this is the one to start with. Like the Zakkart bolster perch above, this AMOSIJOY sill skips suction cups entirely. It clamps onto your windowsill ledge instead, using two metal hooks and a pair of adjustable thumbscrews. The frame combines wood and metal, and it's rated to hold up to 40 lb.

Because the mount is so simple — no measuring out suction-cup placement, no waiting for cups to set — it's a genuinely low-commitment way to try this out. Test whether your cat wants a window spot before you invest in one of the fancier picks above.

  • No suction cups at all — clamps onto your windowsill ledge with two metal hooks and adjustable thumbscrews instead.
  • Wood-and-metal frame construction gives the perch real substance and a sturdy, grounded feel.
  • Rated to hold up to 40 lb, plenty for the average adult cat.
  • The clamp mount means no suction cups to place or monitor at all. That makes this a genuinely low-commitment way to test whether your cat wants a dedicated window spot before you invest in something more elaborate.
  • Because it clamps onto the sill ledge rather than the glass, it only works on windows with a usable sill. Check your window style before ordering.

Most Luxurious

K&H Bolster Kitty Sill (Orthopedic)

This is the premium pick on this list, and it earns that spot through construction rather than gimmicks. It's a single-level orthopedic bolster bed with a removable, zip-off bolster wall. That lets you convert it between a raised-edge bed and a flatter, open platform, depending on what your cat prefers that day.

Instead of suction cups, it mounts with hook-and-loop fastening or the included screws. That gives it a sturdier, more semi-permanent hold than a quick suction setup. It's rated to hold up to 40 lb. And if you've got a cat who likes something to rest her head or spine against while she naps, the bolster wall does real work here.

  • Orthopedic bolster construction gives your cat a raised edge to rest her head or spine against. Genuinely useful for older or joint-sensitive cats.
  • The bolster wall zips off, letting you convert between a raised-edge bed and a flatter open platform depending on what your cat prefers.
  • Mounts via hook-and-loop fastening or the included screws instead of suction cups, giving it a sturdier, longer-term hold.
  • Rated to hold up to 40 lb, comfortable room for a full-grown adult cat.
  • Because it mounts with hook-and-loop or screws rather than suction cups, installation is a little more involved than the quick-suction beds elsewhere on this list. Plan for a real install, not a five-minute hang-and-go.

Frequent Cat Window Bed Q&A

Why should I get a window bed for my cat in the first place?

Cats love sleeping in the sun, and they love watching the world go by — "Cat TV," as a lot of owners call it. My cat Lexi genuinely loses hours to lazing in her window bed watching people go by.

She's picked up bird-watching as a hobby from it too, which keeps her engaged for hours at a time. If your cat is up all night, a window bed can actually help — counterintuitive as that sounds. A bird feeder mounted outside the same window gives her something to watch and stay engaged with during the day.

a black long haired cat laying in a window bed

That tends to mean more settled nights. It's also a great way to get your cat's bed up off the floor and away from the rest of your furniture. Cats generally feel safer and happier somewhere elevated.

Are these suction-cup window beds actually safe for my cat?

After years of using multiple window beds myself, I've had zero real safety issues. Each suction cup alone is generally built to hold the weight of a typical house cat. So even if one cup lets go, there's still plenty of support left.

Give a new bed about 2 hours after installing before letting your cat use it, so you're sure every cup has fully set. After that, check the bed every couple of weeks to confirm the cups are still firmly attached.

a grey cat sleeping in a window bed

If one feels loose, take the whole bed down, clean the window, and reinstall it rather than leaving it half-attached. Suction cups do break down with sun exposure over time, so plan on replacing them eventually rather than expecting them to last forever.

Will mounting one of these damage my window?

Properly hung, these beds won't damage your window. The moment you're most likely to cause an issue is during installation, since you'll be pressing firmly against the glass to get the suction cups to take. Just don't force it.

If you can press from both sides of an open window at once, that makes getting a clean seal even easier. Once it's up, the combined weight of the bed and a cat isn't enough to stress a modern window. Just measure your window first, especially if you've got a multi-pane window, since that affects how and where the cups can grip.

How much weight can these beds actually hold, and how do I pick the right one for my cat's size?

It varies more than you'd expect across this list. It's worth checking the specific rating rather than assuming every window bed handles the same load. Several of the single-level suction beds here land in a similar range — the PEFUNY hammock is rated over 40 lb, the Zakkart metal perch is rated to 40 lb, and the K&H EZ Mount sills are rated to 50 lb.

That comfortably covers the vast majority of adult cats on their own. The Sunhoo hammock perch tops out a bit higher, rated to 55 lb, if you want some extra headroom. If you've got a genuinely large cat — a Maine Coon or similar — or more than one cat sharing the same window, look at the K&H Double Stack Window Sill instead. It's rated to 50 lb and split across two full levels, which is the safer bet here.

It gives each cat a separate space instead of asking one sill to hold both. When in doubt, weigh your cat — or add up your cats if more than one will be sharing. Leave real margin rather than buying right at the edge of a rating.

What's the difference between the suction-cup beds and the ones that clamp onto the windowsill instead?

Most of the beds on this list use suction cups, the traditional approach for this whole product category. Two of them break from that entirely: the Zakkart Perch with Bolster and the AMOSIJOY Windowsill Perch. Both skip suction cups altogether and clamp directly onto your windowsill ledge using adjustable thumbscrews.

The tradeoff is straightforward. A clamp-mounted bed doesn't depend on suction holding over time, which some owners prefer after dealing with cups loosening on other beds. But it only works if your window actually has a usable sill ledge to grip. If your window sits flush without a real ledge, you'll need to stick with one of the suction-cup options instead.

Do any of these fold flat so I can still use my blinds or curtains?

Yes — two of the beds on this list are built to fold flush against the window while still mounted. Those are the K&H EZ Mount Kitty Sill and the K&H Double Stack. That means you can fold the bed up out of the way, instead of taking the whole thing down every time you want to close your blinds or curtains.

The Sunhoo Cordless Hammock Perch is a bit different. It folds down for storage or off-season removal, rather than folding flush while still mounted — a related but separate kind of convenience, not the same in-place fold-away trick. One thing worth knowing: ease any fold-flush bed shut gently, rather than letting it swing or drop against the glass. A hard collapse can crack a window over time.

Can more than one cat use the same window bed?

It depends on the bed, so check the size and weight rating rather than assuming any window bed works for a multi-cat house. The K&H Double Stack is purpose-built for this. Two full levels mean two cats each get their own space instead of competing for one sill, and it's rated to 50 lb.

Most of the single-level beds on this list are sized and rated for one cat at a time. A second cat can usually squeeze in if she's small, but you're working against both the footprint and the weight rating at that point. If a multi-cat window setup is the goal, the Double Stack is the one built for it. It's a better bet than hoping a single-level bed will stretch to fit two.

What can I do to make the experience even better for my cat?

If you want to give your cat even more to watch from the window, a suction-mounted bird feeder outside the glass is a natural pairing. It works with any of the beds above.

The Nature Gear Acrylic Clear Window Bird Feeder is a clear-acrylic, suction-mounted feeder with a removable sliding seed tray. It's built to hold up to the weather, since it lives outside your window full-time.

Wrapping it up on the Top Cat Window Beds

When you’re looking for the best cat window beds a lot of things probably come to mind.  But the most important items on your mind are probably the safety of your cat and the integrity of your window.

You want your cat safe and you don’t want your window to get damaged in any way.

After testing multiple window beds I can honestly say the likelihood of damaging your window seems slim to none. My beds have had both of my cats in them several times and that’s a combined weight of over 20 pounds on a pretty consistent basis.

Unless you hang multiple beds on the same window and really overload it with weight you shouldn’t have trouble with the window.

This means you’re basically down to the safety of your cat as the key deciding factor.  All of these beds are designed to hold way more weight than that of a single traditional domestic house cat.

Those of you with Maine Coons or much heavier cats will want to ensure you choose something rated to hold more weight like the K&H Double Decker or EZ Mount Sill.

No matter which bed you choose you should consistently check the status of the suction cups. Over time, especially in changing weather, they are bound to loosen and become unstable.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that sitting in the sun for several hours a day degrades every material out there, it doesn’t matter what it is. Be sure to test your bed every few weeks to ensure it seems stable and if you need to take it down and reset it after cleaning the window.

If you’ve got a window bed you’ve used and it isn’t listed here please comment below or shoot me a note at Craig@StuffCatsWant.com so I can update this article to reflect your thoughts.

Why Should Cats Wear Collars?

There is one simple response to this question. If your cat gets outside or gets lost a collar is the easiest way for someone to identify your cat and get in touch with you as quickly as possible.

Collars are by far the easiest way for a fellow human to identify a cat and the owner of the cat. Especially if the collar itself is personalized with the cat’s information.

There are also several movements among pet owners (for example the #KittyConvict Project) that make it easy for other cat owners to recognize a lost/escaped cat. This means fellow pet owners are more likely to make an effort to help return a clearly lost pet.

Research shows that cats that get lost are far more likely to be returned to their owners if they have a collar on when they get lost.

Will My Cat Really Wear a Collar?

Many owners simply assume that their cat won’t wear a collar because they’ve mostly seen cats that don’t have collars on. There may be an adjustment period to get your cat used to a collar, but most cats will wear a collar if you as an owner insist on it.

Research has shown that owner perception is the biggest indicator of whether or not a cat will wear a collar. Basically, if owners don’t think the cat will wear a collar then they simply won’t try to get the cat to wear a collar.

But reassuringly, the most recent research shows that over 72% of cats wore a collar through the end of a study period. So if you are dedicated to getting your cat into a collar you can make it happen!

There’s no specific trick to getting a cat to wear a collar. As with most things, it requires time and persistence (and in a lot of cases treats). You’ll want to introduce your cat to a new collar slowly and gradually expand the amount of time the cat wears the collar until they wear it all the time.

Why Only Collars With Safety Releases?

Cats are climbers and explorers and like to squeeze themselves into tight places.  Collars without a safety release can easily get caught on tree branches, splintering wood, a hanging nail, etc. There are a laundry list of things a collar could get caught on in the wild, or even inside the home.

If a collar gets caught on these objects and doesn’t release easily then your cat could be seriously injured, trapped, or even strangled.

Enter safety clasps, buckles and releases. There are also the more uncommon elastic straps that serve a similar purpose, but aren’t as highly recommended these days. All of these are designed to ensure your cat has an opportunity to get out of an otherwise dangerous situation.

The short of it is, collars keep your cat safe if they get lost, but safety releases bring an extra layer of safety if they get stuck on something while out and about.

What if My Cat is an Indoor Cat Only?

Many cat owners don’t encourage their cats to wear collars because the cat is “indoor only.” The unfortunate thing is that the bulk of cats that get lost and don’t make it back home are cats that escaped from an indoor only life.

They may have snuck out the door or been spooked while the front door was open and simply scampered off. Most indoor cats will get outside at some point in their life so a collar is a great added layer of safety.

Unfortunately you can’t put a collar on your cat once they are already out the door. Indoor cats should have collars on even if you never intend to let them out.

What if My Cat Already Has a Microchip?

Microchips are one of the most effective tools ever created in tracking pets and ensuring they make it home to their owners when lost.

However, microchips aren’t something that an average individual can scan/read. And many people, non pet owners in particular, aren’t even familiar with their existence. The Humane Society recommends that even microchipped cats wear a collar with tags or identification included.

This means that for the microchip to be useful your cats has to make it it to a veterinarian, shelter or animal control center of some sort. Added steps mean added complexity and every additional step means your pet is less likely to make it home to you.

Now don’t get me wrong. I highly encourage you to mircochip your pet. It is an absolute necessity. But a collar will be something almost any person can read and use to get in touch with you the second they encounter your cat.

How to Measure Your Cat For a Collar

Average collars tend to measure between 8 and 12 inches for an adult cat. This will easily accommodate most cats out there, but for those of you with smaller or extra large cats you may have to look for something special.

Measuring your cat for a collar is a necessity to ensure the collar won’t simply slip off at any point and also to make sure it won’t choke your cat. Cats are also rather resourceful when it comes to their own comfort and you don’t want them to be able to easily shove the collar off.

Measuring your cat’s neck is easy, you can check out this short video how to for a simple overview. All you’ll need is a piece of string and a ruler. This video may help if you’ve never done it before:

Wrapping It Up On Cat Collars

The market is loaded with pet products, in particular about 1000 different variations of cat collars. There are nylon, leather, personalized, standard, accessorized, etc. The list goes on and on.

Each type of collar has advantages and disadvantages worth considering. No matter which path you choose you should aim to include the personal details of your cat on their collar to ensure they find their way home quickly and easily in the event of an escape.

You should also ensure your selected collar has a safety release just in case your cat gets into a sticky situation and the collar gets caught on something. There are several kinds of safety releases, just be sure to choose a collar with one. Note every collar on this page has a safety mechanism.

Don’t be afraid to try multiple types of collars! Some may irritate your cat far less than others and some are more effective for being seeing in the dark than others. There are a bunch of options and you should choose what’s right for your cat based on their personality and behavior.

If you keep a collar on your cat and it has personal details tell us which one it is below! If you’re having trouble getting your cat to wear a collar let us know too by leaving a comment below.

The 13 Best Cat Tunnels of 2026 (Cats Dig Them)

This post was updated in July of 2026 to reflect the latest options!

Cats love to get inside things, boxes, bags, suitcases and of course the coveted cat tunnel.  Every time they come across a new object they can climb inside they can’t seem to resist going for a peek! I guess that’s where the phrase “Curiosity killed the cat” came from.

On the bright side, these days we can satisfy feline curiosity at home with purpose built toys. Namely, cat tunnels! Tunnels are super lightweight, easy to move around and on top of this most of them collapse into a tiny little package making them easy to pack up too.

They are well known for serving multiple purposes for your feline friends. They give them a new place to explore, a place to observe from, a place to hide and of course…a place to ambush their feline pals from. All in all they are some of the best toys money can buy, so let’s take a look at 13 of the best.

The Best Cat Tunnels

Best Overall Tunnel

Prosper Pet 3 Way Play Toy & Cat Tunnel

If you only buy one tunnel off this whole list, this is the one I'd tell you to grab. Prosper Pet's tri-tunnel design keeps popping up as the pick everyone circles back to, and it's easy to see why once you look past the price tag — this thing is built like it expects to survive a house full of cats, not just one polite house cat.

It folds down to nothing when you're done with it, which matters more than you'd think once you've tried wrestling a stiff wire-frame tunnel back into a closet. Whether you've got one curious kitten or three cats who all want the same tunnel at once, there's enough room here to go around.

  • The tri-tunnel layout gives your cat three separate entry points to explore, ambush from, or nap in — with over 50 inches of combined tunnel space, there's plenty of real estate even in a multi-cat house.
  • A center peephole lets your cat pop their head out mid-chase, exactly the kind of surprise-and-pounce moment cats live for.
  • Built-in crinkle paper adds a noise layer that keeps most cats engaged well past the "sniff it once and walk away" stage.
  • The tear-resistant polyester shell wraps a sprung-steel frame with protected ends, so it's built to take real scratching and pouncing abuse rather than just looking sturdy in photos.
  • It collapses flat with an elastic band in seconds, so storing it between play sessions doesn't turn into a wrestling match.

You can also check out this video of several kitties playing with a brand new Prosper Pet 3 way tunnel, they are having an absolute blast!

  • The slippery polyester bottom can slide around on hardwood or tile, so if your floors are slick, plan on a rug underneath or expect to reposition it after an enthusiastic play session.

Best Multi-Piece Value

Kitty City Cat Tunnel, Bed & Toys Combo

If your cat gets bored of a single tunnel in about a week (some do), this is the pick that gives them more to explore in one box. Kitty City built this as a combo rather than a standalone tunnel, pairing a genuinely long pop-open tunnel with a bed and a few toys so your cat has more than one reason to keep coming back.

It's an easy pick for multi-cat households too, since a lone tunnel tends to turn into a territory dispute the second cat number two wants in. And because it pops open the second you pull it out of the box, there's zero setup between unboxing and your cat diving in.

  • At 44.5 inches, it's one of the longer single tunnels in this whole roundup — plenty of room for an adult cat to fully disappear inside without cramping.
  • Bundling in a bed and toys means your cat gets a few different ways to use the same purchase, instead of losing interest once the "new tunnel" novelty wears off.
  • Both tunnels come equipped with dangling toys on the end to provide extra entertainment.
  • The listing's own return data flags this as an item customers tend to keep rather than send back, a good quiet signal of how it holds up once it's actually in a home.
  • It's an Amazon's Choice pick and one of the more popular tunnels shoppers are landing on right now.
  • Pop-open design means it's ready for play the instant it's out of the packaging — no assembly, no fighting with a stiff frame.
  • Because this is a bundle rather than a simple single tunnel, it takes up noticeably more floor space than a standalone tunnel — worth measuring your spot before you buy if you're tight on room.

Best Single Tunnel

PAWISE Cat Tunnel for Indoor Cats

PAWISE keeps things simple with a single collapsible tunnel built around one genuinely useful feature: a peek hole positioned so your cat can pop their head out mid-run without fully committing to leaving the tunnel.

At 34.5 inches long and 10.5 inches in diameter, there's enough length here for a proper chase without turning your living room into an obstacle course. It's an easy, no-frills pick if you just want one solid tunnel rather than a multi-piece system to keep track of. And because it's built to fold flat, it's just as easy to tuck away as it is to pop back open.

  • The peek hole gives your cat a mid-tunnel ambush spot, exactly the kind of surprise-attack setup that keeps cats coming back to a tunnel long after the initial curiosity wears off.
  • At 34.5 inches, it's long enough for an adult cat to fully stretch out and disappear inside, not just poke their head in and out.
  • This same sprung steel frame ensures durability when your feline pals jump on top of it, it’ll spring right back into form, no damage!
  • It's an Amazon's Choice pick in the indoor cat tunnel category, a decent signal it's holding its own against a crowded field of near-identical tunnels.
  • The collapsible build folds flat in seconds, so it stores easily in a closet or drawer between play sessions.
  • The blue colorway is a practical option if you'd rather it blend into a room than stand out.
  • As a single tunnel rather than a multi-way design, it won't give multiple cats separate entry points the way a 3-way or 4-way tunnel will — fine for one cat, less ideal if you're refereeing more than one.

The Crowd Favorite

Tempcore 3 Way Collapsible Cat Tunnel

Tempcore's 3-way tunnel is about as no-nonsense as this category gets, and that simplicity is clearly working — it's genuinely one of the most-purchased tunnels in this whole category right now. There's nothing flashy going on here: three connected chutes, a collapsible steel frame, and a black-and-blue color scheme that won't clash with your living room.

If you want proof that a good tunnel doesn't need a gimmick to earn its spot on a "best of" list, this is it. It's also priced low enough that picking up a second one for a multi-cat house doesn't feel like a big decision.

  • The 3-way layout gives your cat multiple entry and exit points, exactly what turns a tunnel from "walk through once" into "ambush spot for the next six months."
  • It collapses down for storage the same way the rest of this list's better picks do, so you're not stuck finding a permanent home for it.
  • Each tunnel is about 13 inches long (from the outside of the center) and about 8.5 inches in diameter.
  • It's currently one of the most-purchased tunnels in the category, a solid vote of confidence from shoppers making the exact same decision you are.
  • The straightforward black-and-blue design keeps it from looking out of place if you've got other cat gear scattered around the house.
  • The lower price point makes it an easy add if you're already buying a bigger-ticket item elsewhere on this list and want a second tunnel for another room.
  • At this price and this simple a build, don't expect the plush, padded feel of some of the pricier tunnels on this list — it's a straightforward polyester tube, not a cushioned hideaway.

Best Combo Set

GONPETGP Cat Tunnel, Cube & Tent Combo

GONPETGP takes the classic tunnel and multiplies it — instead of a single connected system, you get a tunnel, a cube, and a tent as three separate pieces you can arrange however fits your space. That flexibility is the real draw here, whether that means grouping all three into one play area or spacing them out around a room.

It's a genuinely different approach from most of the tunnels on this list, which lock you into one fixed shape. For a house with more than one cat, giving each cat their own piece to claim can cut down on the "there's only one tunnel and I want it" standoff.

  • Getting three separate pieces (tunnel, cube, tent) means you can rearrange your cat's play space instead of being stuck with one fixed layout.
  • Multiple separate pieces mean multiple hiding spots, genuinely useful in a multi-cat house where everyone wants their own place to disappear.
  • The set includes toys alongside the three pieces, so there's already something to bat around without buying extras separately.
  • It's an Amazon's Choice pick, and current buying activity suggests plenty of other shoppers landed on the same combo-over-single-tunnel logic.
  • Because it's three separate pieces rather than one connected tunnel system, it takes noticeably more floor space to lay out fully, and pieces can drift apart during play unless they're tucked into a corner.
  • Because it's three separate pieces rather than one connected tunnel system, it takes noticeably more floor space to lay out fully, and pieces can drift apart during play unless they're tucked into a corner.

Most Play Paths

Large S-Shape 5 Way Cat Tunnel

If your cat treats every tunnel like a racetrack, EGETOTA's 5-way S-shaped design gives them the most ground to cover of anything on this list. Instead of one straight run or a simple 3-way junction, you get a curved, branching layout with five separate legs to explore, double back through, or ambush a housemate from.

It's built with larger cats in mind too, so you're not stuck watching your Maine Coon try to fold themselves into a tunnel sized for a kitten. For multi-cat households especially, more branches means more places for everyone to claim their own spot at once.

  • Five connected legs in an S-shape give your cat far more route options than a straight or basic 3-way tunnel, keeping the "chase" element interesting for longer.
  • It's sized for larger cats specifically, a solid pick if your cat has outgrown the more compact tunnels elsewhere on this list.
  • More branches mean more entry points, genuinely useful in a house with multiple cats all wanting in at once.
  • It's an Amazon's Choice pick, a reasonable signal it's holding up well against the sea of near-identical tunnel listings.
  • The pink-and-black colorway is a nice change of pace if you're tired of every cat toy in the house being beige or gray.
  • A 5-way layout with this much branching takes up real floor space once it's fully expanded, so measure your room before assuming it'll tuck neatly into a corner the way a simple straight tunnel would.

Best for Low-Energy Cats

SmartyKat Hideout Tunnel

SmartyKat's Hideout keeps things about as simple as a tunnel gets — one long tube with a single wide opening built for hide-and-seek and ambush play rather than a sprawling multi-way maze. It's specifically marketed to encourage exercise in less-active cats, which makes it a solid pick if yours needs a little coaxing to get up and move.

SmartyKat's been making cat gear for years, and this tunnel is also designed to meet child-safety standards, so it's an easy yes if you've got kids or other pets sharing the same space. It's a genuinely simple product, but simple is exactly the point if all you want is something your cat can hide in, pounce out of, and chase toys through.

  • The Crackle Chute's crinkle material is built right into the walls, giving your cat that satisfying sound with every step, without needing a separate crinkle-paper insert.
  • The single wide opening is designed for hide-and-seek and pounce-style play, which tends to appeal even to less-active cats who need a little encouragement to move.
  • It pops open and collapses in an instant, so it's easy to keep tucked away when it's not in use.
  • It's held up well against reviewers reporting months of persistent chewing and clawing, a good sign for a tunnel built this simply.
  • Despite its compact folded footprint, several owners say it comfortably fits larger, heavier adult cats — though a few felt it ran smaller than expected, worth keeping in mind if your cat is on the bigger side.
  • The crinkle noise is genuinely hit-or-miss — some cats bolt right in, but a few reviewers say their cat needed time to warm up to the sound before actually using it.

The No-Fuss Pick

LUCKITTY Straight-Shaped Cat Tunnel

LUCKITTY skips the multi-way maze approach entirely and just gives you one long, straight tunnel — and honestly, sometimes that's exactly what you want. At 47.2 inches, it's long enough for a proper full-body chase without needing to plan out a layout or connect multiple pieces together.

The rainbow wave pattern on the outside is a fun departure from the usual black-and-gray tunnel aesthetic too. If you just want something your cat can run through, hide in, and pounce out of without any setup decisions, this is the least complicated option on the list.

  • A single straight tunnel means zero assembly and zero decisions about how to configure it — it's one continuous run, with nothing to connect or piece together.
  • At 47.2 inches, there's plenty of length for your cat to fully commit to a chase rather than just poking their head in and out.
  • The rainbow wave exterior pattern makes it easy to spot buried under a couch or behind furniture, which matters more than you'd think with all-black tunnels.
  • Its simple shape makes it a good "starter" tunnel if you're not sure yet whether your cat is even going to be into tunnels.
  • Because it's a single straight run rather than a multi-way design, it won't give more than one cat separate hiding spots at the same time — fine for a single-cat home, more of a bottleneck in a multi-cat one.

Best for Large Cats

Pawz Road Extra Long & Wide Collapsible Tunnel

If you've got a Maine Coon, a Ragdoll, or just a genuinely big cat who's spent their whole life folding themselves into tunnels built for something half their size, this is the one to get. Pawz Road built this specifically oversized — 51 inches long and 12 inches wide — so your cat can actually turn around inside instead of backing out the way they came in.

The leopard-print exterior over a soft plush interior gives it a nicer look than the standard black polyester tube too. It's also one of the few tunnels on this list built to double as an outdoor option, with reinforced ground stakes included for setting it up in the yard.

  • The extra-large 51 x 12 inch dimensions mean even bigger breeds can comfortably fit, turn around, and pass each other inside — a real problem with most standard-sized tunnels.
  • The reinforced steel-wire frame is noticeably thicker than what you'll find on standard tunnels, and multiple long-term owners report years of use with no exposed wires or fabric tears.
  • Multiple reviewers specifically mention two cats using it inside at once without feeling cramped, handy if you've got more than one big cat in the house.
  • The dual-layer construction (crinkly exterior, soft plush interior) means it's comfortable enough for a cat to nap in, not just run through.
  • Reinforced ground stakes let you set it up outdoors, which most tunnels on this list simply aren't built to handle.
  • The attached pom-pom accessories tend to get torn off fairly quickly under real play, and at least one owner flagged the ball's stuffing as not ideal for a cat that likes to chew — worth watching if your cat is hard on toys.

Most Novel Design

The Original Hide and Sneak Paper Cat Tunnel

Every other tunnel on this list is polyester wrapped around a steel frame — this one's just paper, and that's exactly the point. Made in the USA from all-natural recycled kraft paper and designed alongside a feline veterinarian, the Hide and Sneak leans into the fact that cats already love a good paper bag and just makes that bag bigger, sturdier, and shaped like a tunnel.

At 33 inches long with 8-inch openings, there's a genuinely roomy interior that appeals especially to larger cats. It folds flat for storage just like the fabric tunnels, but because it's paper, it's fully compostable once it's finally worn out.

  • The 100% kraft paper construction gives every step and scratch that distinct paper-bag crinkle cats are already obsessed with, without needing a separate crinkle-paper insert.
  • At 33 inches long with 8-inch-diameter openings, there's genuinely enough room for larger cats to turn around inside rather than just backing out the way they came in.
  • Being fully biodegradable and compostable makes it the most eco-friendly pick on this list, a real plus if that matters to you.
  • It folds down to about 12x12 inches for storage in seconds, same as the fabric tunnels, despite being made from a completely different material.
  • It's a genuinely low-cost, semi-disposable option — several owners plan to simply replace it every so often rather than expecting it to last forever.
  • Reviewers are genuinely split on durability — some report months (even years) of use, while a comparable number say claws punch through or tear it within weeks, so treat it as consumable rather than a one-time buy if your cat is rough on toys.

Most Durable

Trixie Pet Products Scratching Tunnel

Every other tunnel on this list is designed to withstand your cat's claws — this one is designed to actually invite them. Trixie built two mini scratching hideaways, both wrapped in sisal, and connected them with a soft tunnel in the middle, so your cat gets a plush retreat and a legitimate scratching surface in the same product.

At 43 inches long, there's enough room for a single cat to stretch out or for a couple of cats to share it without bumping into each other. It's a genuinely different take from the crinkly polyester tubes that make up most of this list, and it holds up to daily clawing without looking worn out.

  • The sisal-covered hideaways at both ends give your cat an actual scratching surface built into the same toy they're already using for play, which can help redirect scratching away from your furniture.
  • Both hideaway ends double as soft, enclosed napping spots — not every tunnel on this list doubles as a bed.
  • A hanging pom-pom toy inside the tunnel section adds a batting target for cats who want more than just a place to sit.
  • Owners consistently describe it as sturdy enough to hold up to daily scratching and clawing without visible wear, exactly what you'd hope for from a product built around scratching.
  • It still collapses down for storage or travel, even with the added scratching material at both ends.
  • The unsupported center section can sag or partly close in on a cat squeezing through the middle hole, and without a non-slip surface underneath it can shift around on hard flooring during play.

Uniquely Shaped

Lesure Donut Cat Tunnel Bed

Lesure ditches the straight-tube format entirely and builds this one as a full circle — a donut-shaped tunnel wrapped around a center bed, so your cat has to hop up and over the ring to get to the napping spot in the middle. It's a genuinely different play-and-rest combo than anything else on this list, giving your cat exercise (chasing around the ring) and a dedicated place to actually settle down and sleep, in the same product.

The jacquard fabric gives it a softer, more finished look than the typical polyester tube too, so it doesn't stick out if it's living in your living room rather than a spare room. It's a great pick if your cat already treats donut beds as a favorite spot and you want to add a play element to that same appeal.

  • The circular donut shape gives your cat a full loop to chase around, rather than a dead-end tunnel they have to backtrack out of.
  • A center bed built into the middle of the ring means your cat gets somewhere to actually settle down and sleep, not just pass through.
  • The soft jacquard fabric has a more finished, furniture-friendly look than the crinkly polyester most tunnels on this list use.
  • It's built with a nod toward more sustainable materials, a nice bonus if that factors into your buying decisions.
  • Combining play and rest in one product means less floor space dedicated to cat gear overall compared to buying a separate tunnel and a separate bed.
  • Compared to a simple flat tunnel with no bed attached, this one still needs a larger dedicated footprint on its own — worth measuring your spot even though it's saving you from buying two products.

Most Affordable 3-Way

Alicedreamsky Collapsible 3 Way Cat Tunnel

If budget is the deciding factor and you still want a multi-way tunnel rather than a single straight tube, this is the cheapest way to get there on this whole list. Alicedreamsky keeps the build simple — a 3-way collapsible tunnel in black and blue, with a single play ball attached to give your cat something to bat at along the way.

It's not trying to be the fanciest or roomiest option here, it's trying to be the easiest yes if you're not ready to spend much to find out whether your cat's even going to like tunnels. And because it folds flat just like the pricier options, you're not sacrificing storage convenience to save money.

  • The 3-way layout gives your cat multiple entry points to explore and ambush from — the same core appeal you'll find in tunnels at any price point.
  • A single attached play ball gives your cat a batting target without the tunnel being loaded down with extra toys.
  • It collapses flat for storage exactly like the pricier multi-way tunnels on this list, so you're not giving up convenience to save money.
  • The black-and-blue color scheme keeps it low-key if you'd rather your cat gear not be the centerpiece of the room.
  • It's a low-risk way to test whether tunnels are actually going to be a hit with your cat before investing in a pricier option.
  • With only one play ball attached and no peephole or bell toys called out in the listing, it's a more bare-bones setup than some of the other multi-way tunnels here — fine if you just want the tunnel itself, less exciting if you want built-in extras.

Common Cat Tunnel Q&A

Why Are Cat Tunnels Pawsome?

Cat tunnels are amazing toys because they play on numerous natural instincts that your cat already has. Tunnels are simply incredibly versatile products that help fill a lot of gaps for cats.

Curiosity: Cats are notoriously curious creatures. They love to go exploring and while they certainly don’t like huge changes they definitely love to check out new places in the house or slight changes in the house.

Enter cat tunnels. Tunnels provide a new space in the house that can easily be moved around to always have some level of novelty. You can also easily pack them up and put them in the closet or a drawer for a few days or a week to help maintain the mystery when you bring the toy back out!

Hunting: Cats love to hunt. It is a natural instinct. You’ll see them do it with their toys and even with their fellow cats in the house. From the minute they are old enough to pounce they are practicing their hunting skills.

Tunnels not only provide excellent places for your cat to hide and to stalk from, but they also provide an amazing place for your cat to pounce and ambush from.

Exercise & General Play: Whether it’s an open paper bag or a box, your cat likes to keep herself entertained throughout the day. They’ll often make their own games up and bat their toys all over the place or jump off of the wall.

Tunnels provide an excellent distraction for your cat in the sense that they are a new space and they are often equipped with built in toys. Many have built in crinkly paper to make new noise and almost all have hanging toys built into the ceiling for your cat to bat and swat at. Last but not least, most tunnels are somewhat see through and you can drag a wand or a finger down the outside and your cat will attempt to pounce on it.

Safety: If you have a new cat that spends most of her time under the bed or in the closet then a tunnel might be a good option to help her come out of her shell. Tunnels can be placed in strategic locations that are closer to humans so your kitty will come out, but they give an added level of safety for your cat as well because it minimizes the number of ways people can approach her.

The use of tunnels will allow a frightened cat to be able to feel protected enough so she can start to step out from her anchored hiding spot.

Systems & Mazes: Depending on the amount of room you have and the curiosity of your cat you can easily create an entire maze or a cat tunnel system. Most of the tunnels can easily be strung or clipped together even if they don’t come with the parts. This means you can always switch them out to create new and novel shapes for your cats.

Can I Use These Outdoors?

I didn’t specifically note it, but many of these tunnels can be used indoors/outdoors. Any tunnels made of polyester and metal sprung frame can definitely be used outdoors. That being said, I wouldn’t leave them outdoors if they aren’t currently in use.

If the weather changes it can certainly damage them and on top of this most of these tunnels are designed to be super lightweight and can easily blow away in a strong gust of wind.

On the bright side, polyester is generally very easy to hand wipe or hand wash if the tunnel does get dirty. Just grab a wet washcloth and you can scrub most substances right off of the tunnel.

Can Cats of All Ages Use Tunnels?

Cat tunnels are generally designed to handle adult cats, but kittens can easily use them too. I’ve not seen any kitty tunnels specifically, but every tunnel can and will accommodate small cats or even young kittens if necessary.

Some of the biggest users of tunnels are cats that are older or even senior. They love the quiet and safe space tunnels can provide for sleeping or just relaxing.

The only thing I’d be careful of is choosing a tunnel that will accommodate the size of your cat. Big cats definitely require bigger tunnels. The best two tunnels above for big cats are the Hide and Sneak and the Pawz Road Extra Large.

Why does the wire frame start poking through the fabric?

It's one of the most common complaints across nearly every spring-frame tunnel we researched for this list, not just one specific product. These tunnels rely on a coiled steel wire sewn into a fabric channel to pop open and hold their shape, and after enough heavy pouncing, scratching, and full-body cat-tackles, that wire can eventually work its way through the fabric at a seam or a high-wear spot.

It's more of a "when" than an "if" with heavy daily use over months or years, though it typically shows up gradually rather than as a sudden failure. If you've got a cat who treats every tunnel like a wrestling opponent, picking one of the sturdier steel-and-polyester builds on this list — or the Trixie scratching tunnel above if you want something built around clawing in the first place — and checking the seams periodically is the best way to catch it early before it becomes a snag risk.

Why do some reviewers say a tunnel runs small while others say their big cat fits fine?

This shows up across nearly every tunnel on this list, and it comes down to two things: cat size varies enormously breed to breed, and the "diameter" on a listing measures the tunnel fully expanded, not necessarily how much usable room is left once a cat's fur and movement are factored in.

A 10-inch-diameter tunnel that's roomy for an average 10-pound cat can feel tight for a 15+ pound Maine Coon, which is exactly why the size complaints in the reviews split the way they do. If you've got a larger cat, lean toward the tunnels on this list explicitly built with bigger cats in mind — the Pawz Road Extra Long & Wide  and EGETOTA's 5-way are both sized up specifically for that — rather than assuming any "collapsible cat tunnel" listing will automatically fit.

Wrapping It Up On Cat Tunnels

The market is loaded with all sorts of ways to entertain your cat these days. From remote controlled toys to apps to traditional tinkling bells. Every time I pop open Amazon or surf a pet site I see something I never would have expected. And I’m cat crazy so I normally consider myself on top of it.

Every toy has its uses and some cats will certainly be drawn to one type more than another. Cat tunnels do seem like one of those toys that are universally loved by cats. Given this they are a great option to consider whether you’re a new or an experienced cat owner.
